Guest guest
hi jeanne- how does your engine run by mary sue williams and sherry shellenberger is a leaders guide to the alert program for self regulation cost 40 dollars and take 5 also by mary sue williams and shery shellenberger and cost 30 dollars at therapy works albuquerque, new mexico 505-897-3478 and how does your engine runs explains the program and has some activities while take 5 has even more activities in it, they both go together and take 5 is more recent, the tool chest by diana henry po box 145 youngtown az 85363 and was aroumd 20 dollars 888-371-1204 and is full of additional exercises. the 3 books contain sensory activities that include heavy work/ proprioceptive activities such as pushing a weighted cart, carrying weighted objects such as a box of books to the library, cleaning windows, laying on the top of the stomach on top of a therapy ball, swinging on a swing or rocking on a chair. usually about 5-10 minutes of these types of activities can keep a child focused for 90-120 minutes. my own personal opinion is that it helps you regulate your own body energy by channelling some of that energy in other ways. we have a very respected surgeon here in iowa named robert breedlove, he is known more for his ability to ride a bicycle and he has rode a bicycle all the way across the country. he believes that riding a bike helps everything and i think he is right , you feel better, it helps your self esteem and it is good for your body. did you see forest gump? maybe the point they were trying to get across is run to channell your frustrations in different ways. i never got into sports type things but i did run, ride a bike and put a pillow under my stomach and lay on the floor when i would get upset or i was bored when i was a kid and maybe its kindof the same thing. i know one thing for sure it has really helped my joshua. he would not even go into the therapy room by himself at first but now he cant wait to go to therapy. they usually put him on a mini tramp at first and he loves it. we have one at home too and i have seen them for as little as 19 dollars at sears, i dont have a therapy ball but i did get a large and inexpensive ball at wall mart we use, josh is talking now and we can communicate mostly by asking him yes and no questions and that has helped enormously, josh just maxed the kaufman test for apraxis but i dont know if he passed or failed it to be honest because i am suppose to get the test results tomorrow, the books were reccomended by the alfred healy clinic for dissabilitys in iowa city, josh only said 2 words until he was three and a half-ma and more, he had 2 sets of tubes in his ears and his adenoids removed in a 1 year period of time, he likes french fries, popcorn chicken and cheerios which are all kindof creamy and crunchy type foods, he doesnt have much spontaneous type of speech but he loves to be read too and is starting to memorize some of the words in the book, he is 4.3, not potty trained but takes his diaper off when it is wet. josh is agressive, he has communication frustration and lashes out when he cant get his point across, we started slow by reinforcing his ability to make a sound or show us a picture from the pec system. i love josh alot and am trying to o everything i can to help him, he is very affectionate, he gets 1.25 private st and ot combined and.5 st through the school. josh's agressive type behaviors hinder his ability to participate in some types of activities and some people think maybe we arent as good of parents as we think we are and we let josh get away with too much, they dont understand what it is like to have a child with special needs, thats ok. we dont exzpect them too understand thanks-charlotte henry josh st and ot totals 1.75 hours a week and we see a psychologist one hour every 2 weeks, josh is developmentally delayed seriously because of his communication but i hope he will catch, i thought most of his problems might be related to asd at one time which was before the schoolslp but a buzz in my ear about apraxia, so tomorrow we will hopefully know for sure, our primary md has also ordered a seperate speech eval at another clinic on march 8 josh has had a pretty tough time but things are getting better now-charlotte henry
