I just wanted to check in.... as it has been awhile.

I've not been feeling well.

I wanted to reply to & Don. I am so outraged

at the way you were treated by this doctor! I hear

more and more the horror stories of how doctors are

treating patients and it really P's me off! I've been

in that same situation more than I can count and the

sad thing is, nothing is being done about it!!! I

actually put off going to doctors unless it's

absolutely necessary, and it shouldn't be that way AT

ALL! These doctors are sure giving all doctors a bad

rap!! I know people that won't even go to the

doctors, because of the way they've been treated. I'm

slowly losing my faith in most doctors (Not all, but

most!)

I also wanted to ask if anyone has heard of a

" Chodeldochal Cyst? " My 27 yr old sister was recently

hospitalized for severe pain and it turned out to be

her gallbladder AND pancreatitis! I thought only

people who drank heavy got pancreatitis.......boy was

I wrong! She was hospitalized a year ago with

Pancreatitis also. Now the doctors (she's got nice

Dr.'s ) want her to go into one of the

hospitals in Boston, because she has this Chodeldochal

cyst and the condition is extremely rare AND

hereditary! I've got similiar (not the rare one!)

symptoms, one being a dilated bile duct (will probably

have gallbladder out), and the other being a cyst on

my left kidney.........she has them on both kidneys,

as well as my dad, who has a cyst on both kidneys too!

This is all new to me and was wondering if anyone has

info on this or advice? I'd greatly appreciate your

help I do hope your ALL doing well and wish you a

Just a warning...on the list of AOEC drs....I was sent to the Phoenix one by my school district. After a cursory examination, I was told that buildings do NOT make people sick...and that there was NO WAY I could be experiencing other chemical sensitivities after exposure to a specific chemical. During the exam he asked me to repeat 3 words and then said...."Well, obviously you don't have any short term memory loss." ???? My first warning should have been when I called to set the appt. and was told that he "worked for the District," NOT me. So please...be careful. Try to get info on specific drs before trusting that they have your best interest at heart.

and he is not supposed to ask you to repeat them back right away and is also

supposed to ask you to say them backwards and count in increments of 7 back

from 100 as well as several other techniques like spelling words backwards

and if he is only an MD...neuropsych testing is supposed to be done by

someone who specializes in it not your everyday neuro either and testing is

extensive as you well probably know.....

I agree EXERCISE EXTREME CAUTION with the toxicologists.

A toxicologist on that list, trained by NIOSH no less, wrote his office notes with a chisel tip magic marker in a very small examining room! When I realized why my head was hurting so badly and I felt faint, I asked this doctor if he could please use another writing tool as I was pretty sure the one he was using was making me sick, he laughed and said he was almost finished...2 pages later I ended up in tears from the pain and neurological affects. He was an IME for a work comp claim, and even though he put me to the ultimate test with the "solvent" pen, he diagnosed somotoform so the company could be relieved of causing my chemical injury.

Of course when you have OSHA stating that MCS clearly is not work related, why would any toxicologist, particularly those paid by industry, say that it was.

Multiple Chemical Sensitivities

Multiple Chemical Sensitivities (MCS) is a highly controversial entity. Some

people believe that exposure to a chemical or chemicals triggers a symptom

complex which has been called MCS. Those symptoms occur in many organ

systems. No physical signs can be found consistently in MCS patients. There

are a number of synonyms for MCS, including: 20th Century Disease,

Environmental Illness, Total Allergy Syndrome, idiopathic environmental

illness and Chemical AIDS. MCS appears to affect young women at a

proportionally greater rate than men or older women.

Recognition

* A number of definitions have been proposed, although there is still no

consensus definition for multiple chemical sensitivities. However, the most

widely accepted definition of MCS is Cullenâ€™s:

" MCS is an acquired disorder characterized by recurrent symptoms, referable

to multiple organ systems, occurring in response to demonstrable exposure to

many chemically unrelated compounds at doses far below those established in

the general population to cause harmful effects. No single widely accepted

test of physiologic function can be correlated with symptoms " (Cullen, 1987).

* Among the proposed theories are dysfunction of the immune system, and

neurologic abnormalities â€“ specifically chemical sensitization of the limbic

system â€“ and various psychologic theories. To date, no studies have validated

any theory.

* A number of medical professional organizations have issued position

statements on this condition. Most of these groups indicate the lack of

scientific and clinical evidence supporting any theory or treatment regimen.

They call for rigorous scientific, placebo-controlled, double blind studies

subject to the same exacting peer review as other medical investigations.

Those organizations include the American College of Physicians (1989), the

American Academy of Allergy and Immunology (1986), the California Medical

Association (1986) and the American College of Occupational and Environmental

Medicine (1991 and 1993).

* The American Academy of Environmental Medicine characterizes MCS as an

" ecologic illness that is a poly-symptomatic, multi-system, chronic disorder

characterized by adverse reactions to environmental excitants, as they are

modified by individual susceptibility in terms of specific adaptations. The

excitants are present in air, water, drugs, and our habitats.... " Physicians

who diagnose MCS and treat patients with various protocols have been referred

to as clinical ecologists. A number of those practitioners founded the

Society for Clinical Ecology in 1968. That organization became the American

Academy of Environmental Medicine in 1984.

* A Report on Multiple Chemical Sensitivity (MCS). This report provides a

public health evaluation of the extent and nature of MCS and recommends

future actions for federal agencies to consider. It is not intended to

evaluate existing diagnostic and treatment methods, nor is it intended to

provide guidelines for individual clinical management of those with symptoms

of MCS.

Evaluation

* Due to the lack of definite information on this subject evaluation must

be performed by a physician knowledgeable of the symptoms of this condition.

Controls

* Because the cause of MCS is not currently known, control methods could

only be based on unproven theories. MCS is not clearly occupationally related.

* Because the cause and effective control methods for MCS are not known and

because it is not clearly occupationally related, there is no OSHA

enforcement related to this condition. However, OSHA does regulate exposures

Hi Charlene,

We are in Massachusetts and yes, we do have excellent insurance. When my

older daughter needed speech just for articulation (she is NT) however, the

insurance only gave us 20 visits. But because of 's DX, she gets

extensions and basically unlimited coverage as long as it is proving

helpful...which it is.

Sorry you are going through such a rough time, but I am happy that you are

Does any one know anything about the vita-mix. I have a web tv unit

and cant get the video part on their sight to work for me. I need a

juicer that works. Is the vita-mix a juicer because the picture looks

like a blender. Does it take whole carrots. What is it any way.

How do you build shape and not big muscles? I don't want to look like a body

builder, but definately need to lose weight (only about 15-20 pounds) and

gain some shape to my body. How do I figure out what exercises to do? Do I

just start lifting weights (I can't afford new equipment or healthclub) and

then when I get where I want to be, just keep doing those exercises without

adding more weight?

I currently have a weight bench and some weights. I also have a stepper

machine (but don't use it since I don't want fat calfs). Also because of

food allergies, I can't do any of the supplements.

I had an aortic valve replaced in 1990. I had scoliosis surgery in 1981 but

all of my rods had already been removed. I had a double curve and there was

no problem with the fusion. mary

yes, I have strange dark brown patches too, I told my rheummy and he said it was related to autoimmune disease and sun exposure. Usually right before a bad flare of a particular joint or area I will get the rash over the joints that are going to be effected and it itches really bad.

, I also got bad headaches on MTX as well as Enbrel. I was told it was a pretty normal side effect of Enbrel. Since I am no longer taking either I have not had any headaches at all!
