Faith,

Yes, I have heard that vitamin deficiences following Gastric bypass can be

very serious. I was suffering from B-vitamin problems before I had my surgery

during the time I was on Methotrexate. It was horrible. It was one of the

reasons I stopped the drug. The side effects were far worst than any

benefits the drug could have had. I was too sick to do anything while on it.

I

chose not to have gastric bypass because of the potential for serious vitamin

deficiencies as well as malabsorption problems of meds that I may have to take

for life. I know we had a discussion at the only gastric bypass support

meeting I went to about so many patients with other chronic illness requiring

meds after surgery and not being able to absorb them. The most serious being

pain meds.

Yes it does take time. I went though two rheummys and two PCPs to get where

I am now. I just dumped my last rheummy. He was a pill pusher and wanted

me to stay on meds that I felt that I not only did not need but were making me

far worst. The best thing I did was leave the job I had which was high

stress. I was standing, lifting turning 8-12 hrs a day and sometimes working

as

many as 28 days straight without a day off at times. My job was also very

ADA unfriendly and refuse to allow me to change work areas or cross train. So

I finally went out permenently of long term disability.

I truly believe that stress plays such a major factor in how I am feeling.

As soon as I was officially fired! So many of my problems just disappeared.

When I had my weight loss surgery I went into remission I guess you could

call it and I have stayed there ever since. I am sure its possible I was

misdiagnosied to begin with...since I really did not accept my diagnosis

willingly. I know only time will tell. It has been 3.5 yrs since I was

diagnosised.

I hope you get to see the rheummy soon and he is able to help you so you are

able to feel more like yourself soon. sorry if I missed the details that

you may have posted. I get digest and many times miss stuff or I don't get

time to read for many days.

Toni,

I have been very ill that is why I have not ben participating in my old

activities. Maybe you did not understand that, I feel as though I have had the

severe flu for the last 2-3 weeks. This puts a damper on getting out of the

house let alone being able to stay awake more than 3 hours at a time. This

shall pass once I get on the right meds, get thoroughly diagnosed. Also

another

thing that is being looked at this morning by my weightloss surgeon is

possible vitamin B-1 ( thiamin) deficiency which could be very serious...

figuring

things out is not easy ..it takes time. I am sure I will be where you are

one day. You are fortunate you feel as well as you do. I do not feel I am

" allowing " my self to be limited at this time, it is my body that is

limited..not

my mind.

I am very active in weightloss support groups. Just days prior to coming

down with this, I was exercising daily ( water aerobics and swimming laps)

Attended functions all the time prior to getting sick. I have not been working

for two years becuase the doctors took me off due to my severe foot problems. I

had a job where I stood for 8 hours each day. The weightloss surgery was an

attempt to help that situation.

Thanks Toni for clarifying.. I hope we can chat more soon..interesting to hear

you had Vitamin B deficiencies while on Methotrexate... This is why I hope my

rheumy is either familiar with weight loss surgery patient needs or is willing

to do the research... talk soon
