Guest guest
Have you had her evaluated by an occupational therapist for the sensory issues? Hello all - I am happy to have found this group. My daughter is 3.5 and has been on Miralax since age 14 mo. She had one bad bout of constipation and has been holding her poop in ever since. Docs keep saying, stick with the Miralax, which we have, but she still always tries to hold it in. She is now in the habit of going in the middle of the night when she is asleep and does not even wake up. For the past six months my daughter has been exhibiting a lot of sensory difficulties and complaining of pain in her finger toes and teeth. She is chewing on everything. She doesn't want to get her hands dirty when she eats, etc. She is afraid to go down stairs unless we hold her hand. We have seen a neurologist. She had a lot of blood tests and the only thing that came up was low iron. She is on iron supplement for 5 months now and still has these issues. I came across the same website that brought you all here I think about possible harmful effects of long term use of Miralax and I freaked! My daughter always holds in her poop - it does not matter what we do or don't do, but I do not want to give her Miralax anymore. Any suggestions on what to do now to help her not hold it. I think the best solution I've come up with (in addition to the usual have her drink a lot of water and eat the right foods and avoid constipating foods), I am going to sit her on the potty after meals for at least 10-15 minutes and if she goes a few days of trying to hold it in, I will do an enema. She hates it, but when given the choice, sometimes she will poop on the potty instead of having the enema. I don't know what else to do - we have to get her to stop holding it in and I don't think diet is her problem - it is and has always seemed to be behavioral - she doesn't want to poop so she holds it in. Also, is there safe supplements I can give her to help heal whatever damage the miralax may have caused? Thanks for any advice.
Guest guest
We had the same thing happen...................our pediatric neurologist told us she was experiencing hyponatremia from this medication which should replenish itself with in a few days, in which, it DID NOT. This is what drove me to study these children and the FDA adverse reactions to better understand what this medication did. Please read the attached and the link to see what this medication really does. Please don't miss the Drug oversight board meeting of the FDA discussing the side effects of polyethylene glycol in children. Our dd was obsessively licking and sucking her fingers also. Obsessively rinsing her hands and face in the showerafraid of noises for years..............took almost a year for her to show any improvement and almost 10 years before she really improved. Let us know if you're having stinging pee pee issues..............fresh lemonade helps with that. I'll post the link after this one. Our dd was only on it for 10 days?????????? I found on Physician that said it crossed the blood barrier of her brain, another said through osmosis, it could have crossed the stomach wall and went to the brain (Children's Memorial Chicago IL) www.ntuh.gov.tw-PMR-Lists-List14-Attachments-164-10253009-200903-37-1-45-50-a.pdfDon't forget attachments..............Jeanie ☺To: miralax Sent: Sun, November 20, 2011 12:34:28 PMSubject: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop! Guest guest
There is a symptom that caught my docs eye upon reading the fda adverse reactions called ileus. This is a paralytic condition of the bowel caused by PEG. It puts the bowel to sleep per say. This is where all the accidents come from. again...........not their fault.................I would recommend a product by shaklee called Herblax, it's all natural and will produce defication. You may also want to give a probiotic. We use Kirkman labs chewable. They are expensive but cheap supplements aren't good in my opinion. Kid Calm works well also. Please see fda adverse reactions and see how many times ileus is reported................these poor kids couldn't go if they wanted to...............To: miralax Sent: Sun, November 20, 2011 12:34:28 PMSubject: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop! Guest guest
We are having her evaluated next month. The thing that drives me crazy is that she did not have these sensory issues until 6 months ago, shortly after the Hep B shot which is what I have/had been attributing it to. But I guess it could also be the long term use of the miralax. It makes me sick. > > > Hello all - I am happy to have found this group. My daughter is 3.5 and has been on Miralax since age 14 mo. Guest guest
Lilu, my OBGYN took it to his office and looked under a microscope to find. Upon analysis, ask your doc to check for crystals and detect what kind. We believe the PEG is breaking down into it's original state EG. For those trying the lemon juice, please mix with country time lemonade mix as I mentioned this before and I found parents were giving straight lemon juice which can give a tummy ache. I make a the country time and squeeze a few lemons, strain out the seeds and add to the watered down Country time lemonade mixture. It gives instant relief within the half hour and we went through YEARS of this without a remedy. Antibiotics made it worse. Note: if they don't request to look for the crystals, they won't come up unless the are an elevate PPM parts per million To: "miralax " <miralax >Sent: Sun, November 20, 2011 4:46:02 PMSubject: Re: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop! Jeanie, I believe my daughter has the stinging pee pee issue. She is 100% potty trained for #2 but is quite resistant for #1. I see her doing the pee pee dance and immediately send her to the potty so it's not as though she doesn't feel it coming. She is simply withholding it. She has complained that it hurts when she pees, but only sometimes. At first, I thought it was because she may have another UTI, but the fact that it hurt sometimes didn't compute. Also, she was recently on Antibiotics for a severe ear infection in both ears, which should have helped clear up the UTI if she had any, but just the other day, she told me it felt like needles when she pees. I asked her if this is why she doesn't want to go pee pee and she said yes. I think she holds it in until she can't anymore then wets herself.I will immediately try the fresh lemonade. She's 4.2 years old and is something of a picky eater, but she's also super intelligent, so if I explain to her that the lemonade will help take away the stinging pee pees, she may learn to drink it. What exactly is it in the urine that causes the stinging? Can it be detected? How can I get this confirmed medically. My DD was on Miralax for 8.5 months, starting at 18 months, and she has been Miralax-free now for 2 years mainly thanks to this group. To: miralax Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2011 4:59 PMSubject: Re: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop! Guest guest
Thanks for the link and attachments. I look forward to reviewing. Not sure about the burning pee pee - sometimes she resists going, but I think that is more of not wanting to stop playing long enough to do so. Has anyone else's child had (or have you heard of) child complaining of their fingers and toes hurting/tingling? For the past six months my daughter has been exhibiting a lot of sensory difficulties and complaining of pain in her finger toes and teeth. She is chewing on everything. She doesn't want to get her hands dirty when she eats, etc. She is afraid to go down stairs unless we hold her hand. We have seen a neurologist. She had a lot of blood tests and the only thing that came up was low iron. She is on iron supplement for 5 months now and still has these issues. I came across the same website that brought you all here I think about possible harmful effects of long term > use of Miralax and I freaked! >
Guest guest
My son had the tingling symptoms when he was on miralax. He really was poisoned by that stuff. Look in the files sections - last document -- What Worked for Us -- to see how I got him off of miralax. He was Miralax for a little over a year. My advice, start using natural calm or kid calm ASAP -- or capsules if she can swallow pills. > > > > We had the same thing happen................... > > our pediatric neurologist told us she was experiencing hyponatremia from this > > medication which should replenish itself with in a few days, in which, it DID > > NOT. Guest guest
I have used culturelle. It is decent. It is not as good as some of the more expensive live probiotics that you find mail order or in the fridge section. But honestly, it is easily available, affordable, and does a decent job. I also have liked PB8 for the same reasons, and it seems to make it further through the SI before breaking down. Of the cheaper probiotics, I will recommend both of these as ok.Also, for those who are hyper sensitive to dairy (I personally have not had reactions to culturelle), but some folks I know really like the carrot-based acidophilus. Are you doing live-cultured yogurts? Also, my daughter also had a lot of sensory/witholding issues. Fish oil or flax oil, in any for you can get it in, may be helpful. It really seemed to help us. Also the deep pressure squeezes and body compressions seemed to help stabilize her system and work out this issue (if you haven't seen it, check out the Willbarger protocol - or google "compression sensory protocol")best wishes! hope this helpsMeadow To: "miralax " <miralax > Sent: Sunday, November 20, 2011 5:48 PM Subject: Re: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop! Guest guest
lyme disease can cause fingers and toes tingling. Mainstream medicine's tests are inaccuarate. You need to see an ILADS doc to get tested properly. But you can certainly start with your primary care Physician. Ask for the Western blot not the . the hurting can be from oxalate caused from PEG...............long storyif it continues or gets worse, I'd definitely get her tested for lyme To: miralax Sent: Sun, November 20, 2011 5:35:07 PMSubject: Re: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop! Guest guest
Before you do any testing take her to the chiropractor and make sure she isnt out of alignment, that can cause the tingling also. Look for simple things before you start spending globs of money on testing. Tamet lyme disease can cause fingers and toes tingling. Mainstream medicine's tests are inaccuarate. Guest guest
Just remember to look at the body as a whole entity. Make sure there are no physical structures causing issues before you jump to extremes. Once that is clarified then start looking at the other problems, parasites, protozoa, etc. And if she is on miralax get her off it asap and on something else. Lemon water in am and throughout the day to help diminish the oxalates and you might try adding juicing. My son cant live comfortalby without juicing daily. I dont know why but it is amazing to watch the difference in him when he is having trouble. I image it is because it supports the gall glabber which will then help the liver and so on and so forth. The domino effect.T Thanks. The neuro wanted her to have a neck MRI but I just did not want to go that extreme yet. Guest guest
Thanks. I am almost positive her withholding is completely behavioral, but I do need to give her something to keep it from hurting and get her going on a regular basis so that it does not get large and hard to pass. Guest guest
I just sent the e-mail, it's titled, EG the same as PEG. it was a animal study with rats and EG showing how the lemon juice broke down the calcium oxalate crystals. We just add fresh lemon juice to lemonade............. Over the years it's been a pattern of hearing stories from parents of the same things we experienced especially the uti's that are not definite uti's. They show bacteria, elevated calcium, high phosphorus and sometimes calcium oxalate crystals. The children complain that they have to go but can't and a stinging burning sensation. I also sent documents showing calcium oxalate crystals in the urine of a woman who took PEG electrolyte solution. I'll attach it again and resent the EG same as PEG e-mail.......................www.ntuh.gov.tw-PMR-Lists-List14-Attachments-164-10253009-200903-37-1-45-50-a.pdfJeanie take a look at this. Says here that they used eg to induce oxalates. Lemon juice removed them. Thought anyone who was trying to detox miralax should be considering lemonade. What do you think????NattalieAbstractBackgroundThe use of herbal medicines (medicinal plants or phytotherapy) has recently gained popularity in Europe and the United States. Nevertheless the exact mechanism of the preventive effects of these products is still far to be clearly established, being its knowledge necessary to successfully apply these therapies to avoid stone formation.MethodsThe effect of oral lemon juice administration on calcium oxalate urolithiasis was studied in male Wistar rats. Rats were rendered nephrolithic by providing drinking water containing 0.75% ethylene glycol [v/v] (EG) and 2% ammonium chloride [w/v] (AC) for 10 days. In addition to EG/AC treatment, three groups of rats were also gavage-administered solutions containing 100%, 75% or 50% lemon juice [v/v] (6 ìl solution/g body weight). Positive control rats were treated with EG/AC but not lemon juice. Negative control rats were provided with normal drinking water, and were administered normal water by gavage. Each group contained 6 rats. After 10 days, serum samples were collected for analysis, the left kidney was removed and assessed for calcium levels using flame spectroscopy, and the right kidney was sectioned for histopathological analysis using light microscopy.ResultsAnalysis showed that the rats treated with EG/AC alone had higher amounts of calcium in the kidneys compared to negative control rats. This EG/AC-induced increase in kidney calcium levels was inhibited by the administration of lemon juice. Histology showed that rats treated with EG/AC alone had large deposits of calcium oxalate crystals in all parts of the kidney, and that such deposits were not present in rats also treated with either 100% or 75% lemon juice.ConclusionThese data suggest that lemon juice has a protective activity against urolithiasis. Background From: sleeplesscrab To: miralax Sent: Mon, November 21, 2011 12:28:25 PMSubject: Re: New here - how to stop miralax and holding in poop!
