I am not surprised you were having lows and erratic readings. I'm not an insulin user, but I believe you only want to use the Humalog just prior to meals, to handle them. For overnight, you want something with a smooth response curve. Your endo sounds good ... so very happy you and he are clicking on your insulin regimen and low-carb WOE. You and he working together should be able to fine-tune your treatment so you won't have any more hypos and you won't have to worry about getting behind the wheel. If you document the changes in your treatment, and your improved glucose readings, you can take that to court with you to show the judge that you are no longer a hypo threat on the highway. Losing your license would be a terrible hardship. Susie
Guest guest
Well, I finally had my appt. with my new endo (he is actually my first endo from 9 yrs ago, but I had stopped seeing him 8 yrs ago because I moved). It was an incredibly positive experience. After updating him on my lack of professional care over the years, he gave me very positive feedback as to my current insulin regimin and low carb woe, and supports it fully. He gave me some refinements to try for my insulin. I had been using only Humalog and U at night, and have been experiencing occasional nighttime lows and rebound highs in the a.m., and erratic bg readings through the day. Last night I added a bit of N (reducing the Humalog by the same amt), and bg was normal in the a.m. and pretty stable throughout the day. I spoke to him about my car accident in December due to a low while driving, he has suggested that I start a bg log, which must be kept for 3 months, 3 normal HbA1C's, and attend a diabetic education course. If the accident was reported to the Ministry, they require this in order not to lose my license. Hopefully this will be over and done with prior to the court date (which I haven't heard anything about yet... I'm hoping that they lost me). Except for the accident part, I was very pleased and encouraged.
Guest guest
> you were using Humalog before bed, rather than before dinner? I should have clarified... I always use Humalog before all my meals and just a little at bedtime. And for a couple of months it worked fine. When I started this regimin, I tried straight U at bedtime, but still didn't seem to be enough. When I introduced a bit of Humalog, it seemed to do the trick ... for a while anyway. (I haven't been able to get rid of my bedtime snack yet... just a bit of cheese). I started getting some lows at 4 a.m., well beyond the peak time of Humalog (for me, which is in about 1 hr). This is my second morning with using U/H/N combination, and my reading was 93.
