Guest guest Posted January 3, 2007 Report Share Posted January 3, 2007 a brittle diabetic is one whose sugars can rage even on insulin and no food there sugars are very hard to control... the pump dispenses a bolus it is insulin every hour and then U check it before eating thing and 3 hours after U can tell it your sugar level and then your carbs and it dispenses what U need it has helped my sugars stay in control.. U change the set up about every 4 days ...as far as qualifications U dint need any just a Dr script the company will usually work with you so U don't need a co pay...and they will also work with the Dr.. Tommie a PCP can order the pump also... when your sugar is high any minute it is high it is damaging organs my dad would not go on insulin he did go into kidney failure but lived years on dialysis....I have no kidney problems and have been taking high levels of insulin since I had my heart attack.. diabetes also damages the heart when levels are high...some days all together it is overwhelming to think about... diabetes is a nasty disease ...and how it can rack your body up isn't real nice either but we plug along a day at a time.. I had forgotten about asking these questions. lol I had gone to an Endocrinologist about getting the pump and he just ignored the fact. I guess he didn't believe in them or he didn't feel I needed it. Even though he kept upping my dose of Lantus. He has me up to 94u at bedtime and 34u in the morning, plus the Humalog. And then my new PCP I went with back in April then added Metaformin twice a day. Now you tell me, do I need a pump or what? Sure seems so to me. I have since stopped seeing the Endo, after a year of that crap and I now have a new PCP which has talked about another Endo for me. So we'll see.
