Guest guest
Hi Lena, Did you see "Gasland"? It was one of the best documentaries of the year. Hi Bianca, You gave me a turn! We're fighting gas fracking here and 'drill water ' is a dreaded word, loaded with awful toxins. Prill beads can stay in your container. But on the off chance there are any organics in the water, keep it out of sunlight, as some people have seen a bit of green algae develop on the white beads. Guest guest
Haven't seen it yet,(can only handle so much rage) but I'm reading almost as many articles and posts about fracking as I am about Lyme. We live on a large swath of Marcellus shale and the unscrupulous gas-vultures are circling. (shudder) LénaHi Lena, Did you see "Gasland"? It was one of the best documentaries of the year. Guest guest
I know what you mean. I went into a tizzy when I saw it. But I heard the director interviewed on Fresh Air, and it was so compelling I had to record the documentary. I then told several people about it. It's not just where you are. I was stunned to learn it's nationwide, and spreading every moment. The fact that you're seeing lots of articles and posts about fracking is the best news I've heard about it. I subsequently heard an interview with Mark Ruffalo, the actor. He lives in PA, I think, and has several kids, so he's become an activist for this cause. The most memorable scene in the film--a guy whose land was fracked was able to turn on the faucet in his kitchen, hold a cigarette lighter next to it, and light the stream of water on fire. Guest guest
Yes, I've seen clips of flaming taps. We have some land-locked lakes here that will never be remediated if they're contaminated, and all the promises from the gas-men are lies, proven so by their track-record in Canada and other places. Even the poor farmers who thought they'd profit from leasing their lands are getting screwed, because the royalties only happen after ALL the gas companies' expenses are met. It's a boom and bust industry, bringing no jobs, infrastructure destruction and then, afterward: contaminated land and despoiled aquifers, a là Love Canal. Already, a 'model' drill site is demonstrating how bad fracking is: the scores of trucks carrying away the toxin-laden water are slopping and spilling, and wrecking the roads. The places they thought they could dump their loads are turning them away so they're forced to dump in deep pools open to the environment. Bad stuff, like benzine and radioactives in those fracking waters. All foliage and roadways along their routes are contaminated, blowing in the breeze. And then there's the rule of 'compulsory integration': if they drill on nearby lands they've leased, even if you signed no leasing contract with them, your lands' mineral rights can be taken without your permission and the ground beneath you can be horizontally drilled and fracked. They say it's drilled deep below our wells, but science has proven that water tables and ground water shifts are unpredictable and contaminants can rise.Already housing prices have dropped, builders and contrators have hit a slump because no one is sure if it's worth it to build here. And this is pristine, beautiful stown, home of Fenimore 's Glimmerglass: Otsego Lake, headwaters of the Susquehanna River. NIghtmare in the heartland. We're pressuring our town board to ban drilling and we've got a community of smart, creative and energized people organizing. Be well,LénaI know what you mean. I went into a tizzy when I saw it. Guest guest
Good luck, Lena. It's a nightmare, but "a community of smart, creative, and energized people" is exactly what's needed. And publicity to energize even more people.
