You just beat me to the punch posting this article myself..... Good for you. Did ANY of us in the business know that there were these many foul ups concerning people's PHI and Records??? The numbers in this article really should give any doubters about the need to remain de-centeralized, and to cut out more and more levels of "stakeholders, 4th party administrators (can you say Care Core???) and the need for billing companies and collection agencies, all these parasitic losses and glombers onto our financial stream and pipeline....

And at the end of the article instead of speaking out against a system that requires more and more attention to codes and billing, resubmittng and debt collection that the hospital felt a need to out source this work to another party, who was in fact the real source of the breach, instead the final commentor quoted placed the blame and responsibility back upon the provider, hospital for not properly chosing a better more compliant vendor, as though the average practice or doc would even have that much control over another business and entity to make the adjust their business policies or hire and fire based on the customer's requests.... In the end as always, it's just bend over and let us blame you and hang you up on a cross doctor.... you bad naughty doctor....

Read this article and question for the group:http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/09/us/09breach.html?_r=1 & hp= & adxnnl=1 & adxnnlx=1315512030-WZcE0D3FVowflvTyYsp0egI use GoDaddy and Metrofax and encrypt any PHI that's on my laptop. Haven't gotten a straight answer from them...does anyone know if they meet HIPAA encryption standards? Do others of you use them? What do you do for your electronic data-- email and electronic fax? Do you hire consultants for HIPAA compliance? Thanks for the insights to see if I'm on the right track.

Metrofax sent me a document that seems to show appropriate compliance.

RingCentral emailed me that they are compliant with HIPAA.

Dan, will you forward the Metrofax document showing they are compliant to me?  I use it also.  Thanks,  Ron
