Hi everyone,

I have a question. Has anyone ever gone through when they had Tethered Cord

surgery and then out of the blue had no pain. I had surgery Jan. 8th of this

year and all the sudden 2 days ago I had no pain, up to that point I was having

severe back pain ever since a couple of weeks after the surgery and I have

had to take pain pills and muscle relaxants every day since then until 2 days

ago. I just don't know what to think and kind of worried that something is not

right.

Thanks for any help.

My pain is intermittant. Depending on how I sit, sleep, walk, etc. I can

be pain free for months, then all of a sudden it is back. Sometimes nerve

pain, sometimes muscle pain, backache, etc. I have less pain, better

bladder and bowel control since my untethering. I have retethered but will

not have surgery again.

I agree with Judy that my pain is very intermittent - some weeks can be

good, and yet since the start of May I have had a massive flare-Up (not

nice at the busiest time of year at the University!) + an unwelcome

return of the erythromelalgia (more pain, swelling, burning feet, etc)

(which is unusual in the summer months)

I have NOT retethered (proved on MRI), but my pain is due to dorsal

nerve root irritation, and generally, in my case, not pacing myself,

and " forgetting " that I shouldn't do so much!!!

Hello Pam,

Pain is caused by irritation to nerve roots. If the pain goes away, it

should be safe to assume the irritation was removed. You mentioned 'muscle

relaxants', that indicates to me that you or your doctor believe the pain

may be from tight muscles. That is common and logical for TSC. Maybe the

muscle finally let go? After a long term of being in pain, I can certainly

understand your thinking something must be wrong when it goes away. Be sure

to ask your doctor.

I want to thank the people that wrote me back and wanted to know how many

tethered cord surgeries they have had and how soon did the pain come back after

surgery.

Thanks again

Nina,

I SO AGREE...just makes me SOOOO MAD at myself when I do that. I

have a couple good days in a row and ya just feel so darn good with

some of the old energy I USED to have alot of...and I get going

around the house or in the yard. THEN...OHMYGOD...for the next week

at least, I am paying heavily for my stupidity! At 52...you would

think I would learn but it is just way to tempting to take advantage

of " feeling good " and enjoying some of that feeling of the " ole "

days....where pain wasn't a huge issue.

So, in that sense...we all are much alike, huh.

I remember my back pain went away within a few months after my first

detethering. Reason being the spinal cord was no longer being

pulled by the nerve roots and it does take some time to heal from

the laminectomy.

I would be interested in seeing the responses to that thread, are

they available?
