Hi All,

I'm new to the group, so this may have been discussed before, but I just ran across Askapatient.com, where people review drugs they've tried. There is a Miralax section and I'm only through page one, but there are almost 400 reviews. Maybe some of the same people are in this group and this is old news to you, but wanted to bring it up.

I'm looking for alternatives to propylene glycol before a colonoscopy - has anyone used colon hydrotherapy instead?

Oh yes, thank you for clarifying, wrong chemical. it is GoLylely or Miralax this practice uses. I ran magnesium citrate by my dr and she didn't think it provided a thorough enough cleanse by itself for a good colonoscopy read. Sounds like it depends on the practice - have people been successful with mag citrate alone? Carol

You are correct.........it depends on which practice you use............they use mag citrate everyday for colonoscopy clean out...........that's what I used. If you are trying to avoid PEG, Dulcolax tablets contain PEG also, in which, when they prescribe the GoLytely, they also tell you to take dulcolax tabs along with it. It's only upon taking will you find out if you are allergic to GoLytely or not, and they have you drink a container bigger than a gallon of milk. IF you are allergic, you get swelling of the throat, etc. If it were me, I'd much rather take Mag Citrate which doesn't cause this kind of reaction, and isn't a toxic chemical. If your doctor has directed you to use this medication, remember that he or she has judged that the benefit to you is greater than the risk of side effects. Many people using this medication do not have serious side effects.Inform your doctor immediately if you have excessive number of bowel movements, persistent diarrhea, or rectal bleeding while using this medication.A very serious allergic reaction to this drug is rare. However, seek immediate medical attention if you notice any

symptoms of a serious allergic reaction, including: rash,itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, trouble breathing. This is not a complete list of possible side effects. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist. In the US -Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. You may report side effects to FDA at 1-800-FDA-1088.In Canada - Call your doctor for medical advice about side effects. Yes, I thought of that after reading the package insert - they ask you to drink the gallon at one sitting and then look for a reaction. I canceled my colonoscopy while I do my research. Now I need to find a practice that will use mag citrate alone - what about stress on the kidneys from mag citrate in high doses? Did you research that? Carol

There is evidence that even an enema can cause renal failure so with that said, going with the least toxic method in my eyes would be most logical. Do your own survey and call multiple offices and find out what they use. You will find that some use mag citrate and some use the PEG products. Just so you know, the PEG products are in every hospital across America and they supply them with their product! ☺To: miralax Sent: Tue, September 27, 2011 8:42:03 AMSubject: Re: Re: Ask a Patient
