Guest guest
What you have may be shin splints? At least I think that's the name. I had it last August and it lasted through Christmas. My heals were in agony. I couldn't walk and with having polio return it was complete sitting for a while. They can give you a cortisone shot, or you can take Advil and put ice on it. I wish I could remember the first med they put me on. It swelled me all up, than I stepped on something because I couldn't wear shoes and was in a worse mess!!!! I'm now on Neurontin and the heel pain has gone away. However, Neurontin is more for the returning polio. Does your heal hurt when you are laying down, or when you get up and try to walk on it????? That's the best idea. With this it doesn't hurt all that much when lying, but as soon as you put weight on it--WOW!!! __________________________________________________
Guest guest
I would opine that you should do a shorter walk. I also suggest an examination of the shoes you are wearing. If your shoes are inappropriate that may be the cause. If you are already wearing a good walking shoe, sneakers designed for walking, then I suggest you gradually work up to longer walks. Also the type of surface you are walking on can make a difference. a J.
Guest guest
sounds like neuropathy, ask dr for a referrel to a neurologist, you need neurotin if it is, I used take it for the pain you describe. I took neurotin with nortriptyline. Also neuopathy pain is worse for a while after getting bg down to normal numbers, then you should see some improvement, depending how far advanced it is. some neuropathies reverse completely, some don't. Happy to say mine is just about gone, its taken 2 years though, I do feel it at times, so it hasn't gone, just a lot less severe. Mine is mostly in my feet, it feels like walking on bones, even though I feel it, it dosen't hurt when bg is low, but if its high it does. carol
Guest guest
Also, do check your shoes, your socks, etc, but don't stop walking, you need this for your circulation, your pain is most likely the neuropathy not the walking. I thought it was my walkng too, but it hurt worse when I stopped, walking improves it, not worsens it. Good idea to shorten walk and see how it feels, then go for more later. Do see a neurologist though. carol
Guest guest
Hi Carol- I just wrote this post to another list who had " touched " on neuropathy::: Yesterday, I asked the dr about pain meds and she said they are the type you have to take daily- not just when you are painful. I really don't want to take pills if this could be going away soon. I only started having foot pain maybe back in November and was dx'd feb 16. Then it subsided and only recently came back. Thanks for any/all advice. " Joan- have you found any improvement or worsening of your neuropathy? When I was having really high bs my feet hurt alot (one reason I finally figured out I was diabetic). Then I figured out low carb and my bs have come way down. My hbA1c was 11.7 and 2 1/2 months later it is 6.7 My feet felt great. About 2 weeks ago I went off my meds (Glucophage-1000 mg daily) and my bs has stayed low. Once off Glucophage (no more diahrea) I started walking with my neighbor every morning. It is on a small private drive, 1.7 miles, and takes 40 - 45 minutes. Well this week I have had really bad foot pain. I had read somewhere that when nerves regenerate they can be painful. Does anyone know if this could be true? I can't imagine that my neuropathy is worsening with my bs being around 100-110. I went to the dr yesterday and she was impressed with my low bs #'s and weight loss. I lost 4 lbs since 2 weeks ago. I told her about the foot pain and she said to back off the walking. I did not walk yesterday or today and my feet still hurt. I asked her if the pain could be from the nerves regenerating and she said yes. She had heard of that. I asked how long this would continue and she said a couple of weeks. I can cope if it is just a couple of weeks but not if it is forever! My pain is a aching/throbbing/hot/slightly tingly feeling. Mostly in my toes with occasional stabs of pain. When I touch my feet I can feel my touch and there is no numbness. I can not stand having my shoes on and mostly wear loose moccasins unless I am going out. Any advice or description of your neuropathy would be helpful. Thanks- > Now I'm working on the neuropathy! > > joan " " sounds like neuropathy, ask dr for a referrel to a neurologist, you need neurotin if it is, I used take it for the pain you describe. Guest guest
Hi Carol- my shoes are easy spirit walk/run which I think are pretty good shoes. I can not tolerate tight socks anymore but when I walk I do use thicker athletic socks and then rip them off the moment I get home. Around the house I use very thin white cotton socks and moccasins. The dr suggested walking every other day. I actually don't hurt when I walk- just afterwards. Like today I did not walk but they still feel hot so I think you are right- not walking doesn't get rid of the pain. My bs has only been low for about 4-6 weeks so maybe this just has to work itself out. The pain (on a scale of 1-10) is about a 3 to 4 but it is constant and really interfers with my lifestyle. I have alot of work to do and it is hard to get up and move when my feet feel like this. I have heard of diabetic shoes but I am not sure that would help. What can a neurologist " test for " ? I have not gone to see one. Thanks Carol for your advice- <<Also, do check your shoes, your socks, etc, but don't stop walking, you need this for your circulation, your pain is most likely the neuropathy not the walking. Guest guest
I have the Freestyle. I really like it. I don't have to overcome the pain of finger sticks because it tests on my arm or leg instead. No Pain!!. It gives the last 250 tests and the 14 day average. Kerry T Re: My feet are killing me Hi Kerry- sounds like you have a very busy schedule. I was walking every morning until my feet started hurting but my schedule is not nearly as busy as yours. What kind of meter do you have? I would like one that gives averages. <<I'm trying to eat low carb. lets put it that way. my dr wants me on a 200g a day. I'm having a hard time keeping to that. My bg was above 500 and I have slowly gotten it down to 200 average. I have about 145 in the morning 70-140 at lunch and it varies in the evening. usually not higher than 300. I take 14R and 17NPH in morning, nothing at lunch, 12H at supper and 14 N at bedtime. I blew it this weekend because I slept in and forgot to take my dose, or maybe had a unconscious rebellion. I was at 458 at 6pm now at 9pm its is 232 My 14 day average is 205. I was diagnosed 3 years ago and started on meds. I took gluclophage and glucotrol but Not the way I should so it didn't work properly. I started insulin only on November 2nd of 2000. I know that insulin makes you gain weight but my dr wants me to walk every day. My schedule doesn't allow time everyday between work and school and family. I come home from work and have to do some housework and supper. Sometimes I don't get home from class till 9 pm and have to go to bed to be at work at 7:30. I looked up Neuropathy and it sounds like what I have. I have to call my dr tomorrow to reschedule a nutritionist appointment I missed. I have a appointment with my reg. dr on June 3 Hopefully I can get some good answers then. Kerry T>>
