Another interesting point is that my expectation I would develop an immunity to blood glucose shock if I stuck my fingers very often has not yet been confirmed. (Blood glucose shock is that missed heart-beat and sinking feeling in the stomach you get when the BG meter shows 257 just as you were confidently expecting only 98). -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: Susie An: <diabetes_intonelist> Gesendet: Dienstag, 29. Guest guest
I don't either, but I do look at the labels while in the store. The store brand bread is 79 cents and has more carbs and less fiber. The Whitewheat bread is $1.49. My sister (does not have diabetes) told me about this bread. Her doctor told her to eat more fiber. Now if I could just find bread mixes for my bread machine that had less carbs and more fiber. > > >I don't know the fiber count on this one. I am wondering if you might have edema .... or if blood is pooling in your lower limbs? If it is edema, we often find we can improve it by cutting carbohydrate intake so that we don't have excess levels of circulating insulin. Also, fluid pills, more exercise, and elevating the legs all help. If it is blood pooling, maybe your chair is hampering your circulation, or your circulation is impaired for some other reason. For example, if you are taking blood pressure/heart meds such as beta blockers, and you are not checking your own pulse and blood pressure regularly at home, you could be overmedicated. The beta blockers, if taken in excess (especially if a person is dehydrated, from summer heat or from excess urination due to hyperglycemia), can slow the pulse and drop the blood pressure too much. What standards are those, Susie? Still remembering that you said you were interested in treatment in other countries, here is the diabetes screening test used in the town where I live in Germany. It is made in three stages: Stage 1: Fasting (after 8 hours with nothing in stomach) Healthy: <90 mg% Borderline: 90 - 110 mg% Diabetic: >110 mg% Stage 2: Random test made during the day with normal meals, two successive readings Healthy and borderline: if not 'Diabetic' Diabetic: >200 mg% + symptoms (frequent urination, thirst, weight loss) Stage 3: Oral glucose tolerance Starting conditions as Stage 1: Fasting Then 75g grape sugar is administered orally. Blood glucose concentration is measured at 30 minute intervals. After 1 hour: Healthy: <140 mg% Borderline: 140 - 200 mg% Diabetic: >200 mg% After 2 hours: Healthy: <90 mg% Borderline: 90 - 110 mg% Diabetic: >110 mg% If results of all three tests are 'Healthy', subject is diagnosed negative (test is repeated at yearly intervals). If results of all three tests are 'Diabetic', subject is diagnosed positive (test is not repeated). If results are any other combination, the physicians make the diagnosis based on their experience and some other tests. (All values are for capillary whole blood) The funny thing is, Susie, that this screening test is said to be based on ADA/WHO 1997 so I am surprised if some other test is being used in the US now. If, as you say, they are diagnosing as negative people who are still below 200 after TWO hours then things really have been relaxed a lot! We have three therapy targets: Target 1: Avoid complications later: mean BG 100 +/- 40 mg%, HbA1c = <6.5% Target 2: Feel OK at the moment: mean BG 140 +/- 40 mg%, HbA1c = <8% Target 3: Remain alive, avoid coma (but hypos? keep both feet?): mean BG 215 +/-85 mg%, HbA1c = >8% Patients are free to choose their own therapy target (I think the hospital is being sarcastic!). Our nutrition target is: Carbohydrates: 50 - 60% Proteins: 10 - 15% Fat: 30 - 35% There is no special arrangement for breakfast but the German breakfast is almost always the same wherever you go, even in hospital (one cup of black coffee, one white bread roll, marmalade, one slice of hard cheese, one slice of cold pure meat sausage, one boiled egg, one pot of yoghurt - optional: one cigarette). I was not the least bit hungry but I realized I had to eat something and fast...luckily she had some Grape Nuts in the house so I had a quarter cup which fixed me up quite nicely. Guest guest
Vicki > How do you make a bowl of cereal last 20 minutes, ? It surprised me too, but then I take quite a while to make a BG measurement; I try to do it as methodically and hygienically as I can so it takes me some minutes and I am strict about disposing of the bits immediately afterwards (it took about 10 minutes, leaving 5+5 = 10 minutes for the cereal) . And, to be truthful, I was not sure what result I was going to get and after I started, it occurred to me that the height of the BG peak might be proportional to the quantity I ate so I wanted to get a measurement half way through the box so that I could stop in time if it went up too fast! Crazy! I was glad nobody came in to see what I was doing, it would have been hard to explain. -----Ursprüngliche Nachricht----- Von: An: <diabetes_intonelist> Gesendet: Dienstag, 29. Guest guest
From Naomi: I know this is going to sound really goofy but I used this tactic to get my children to eat breakfast (many years ago). I mixed their cereal with ice cream and a little milk. No sugar. It sweetened the cereal and kept it from getting soggy. I do that now for myself (of course using NO SUGAR ADDED and LOW FAT. Tastes pretty good with corn flakes and fills me up too. Another thing is that about every other day I eat 1/2 of a toasted whole wheat bagel with low fat cream cheese (and my cup of coffee) I'm brain dead without my coffee in the morning. LOL breakfast ideas???? From: 768@... Do any of you have any good breakfast ideas. I had a bowl of plain raw oats this morning (no sugar added) and my blood sugar went from 75 to 212. Now I feel very tired. I like eggs okay but I get tired of them if I have them any more than 3 or 4 times a week. I don't like bacon or sauage. Any ideas?
