OK, ya'll. Call me crazy, but I like cold chicken or ham in the morning. Just

the meat. And maybe, on RARE occasion I like a toasted bagel with cream

cheese. (noone has to tell that it is high carb) But really, meat is a good way

for me. I don't get tired or hungry before lunch and eat a salad , or

something.

Oh yeah, do any of ya'll's feet tingle or fall asleep more often if they are not

propped up. Just noticing this getting worse lately. Ankles aching too.

for the suggestions. I think I will also try having things that work for me

at lunch and dinner for breakfast. It is just so awful to start the day off

wrong and have no energy.

There are 62 grams of carbs in a cup of raw oat bran; 104 grams in a cup of

oats. Although I avoid them, there are a few breakfast cereals that don't

have all that many carbs in them.

I usually skip breakfast and make a salad mid-morning. The leanest ham you

can find is good any time of day. We save breakfast for weekend mornings,

when our favorite is omelettes, with mushrooms, peppers, onions, ham, etc.,

along with two slices of the lowest-carb rye bread we can find. We like the

British habit of having sliced Roma tomatoes on the side.

One cup of Quaker Puffed Rice is 12.3 grams of carbs. But that's untypical.

The vast majority of breakfast cereals run between 25 and 80 grams of carbs

per cup. And then there's the milk, plus whatever else one has. It is no

wonder so many people starting out the day with what they mistakenly believe

is healthy for a diabetic (i.e., low-fat) are setting themselves for a

glucose rollercoaster ride. Their bg's soar after this 100-200-gram jolt of

carbs, then they crash, and find they must snack on something even before

lunchtime rolls around. Then they are ready to fall asleep.

The coolest part is that Rob makes the breakfasts! He makes wonderful,

fluffy omelettes. My omelettes always turn into scrambled eggs ... lololol.

I agree that we need to take care of ourselves, both physically and

emotionally. We don't want to face each day feeling as if we're being denied

even the basics of life, like a decent breakfast.

All of us striving for good control struggle with the breakfast issue, I

think. I have a relative who's an exec with one of the major food producers.

I'm trying to interest him in promoting a low-carb line of breakfast items.

There are many low-carb groups online not specifically geared toward

diabetics who have lots of nifty recipes. My favorite search engine for

finding them is http://www.altavista.com

I have a bowl of Malt o'Meal during the winter (28 carbs) or Irish Oatmeal

(26 carbs). I'd never dream of having even a mini-bagel. Now THAT'S carby!

During the warmer months I have a lower carb cold cereal. Rarely more than

30 carbs for breakfast all told. (Of course I take insulin, which gives me a

little more leeway than some of you who are trying to control with diet and

I am so tired of eggs too -- I have been adding things to them, like one

day little crumbles of feta cheese, and another day smearing goat cheese on

top, and a third day some cream cheese. But I am bored to tears with them.

I've tried eating teeny bowls of cereal, or a piece of toast, but I am so

sensitive to carbs in the morning it is amazing....

I would love to hear a small carb idea that doesn't involve eggs...

My breakfast is usually a small serving of corn flakes, a piece of fruit,

skim milk, and coffee.

Occasionally, I'll do fat-free, plain yogurt, with either Splenda and

vanilla extract or a spoonful of Smucker's Simply Fruit. Sometimes, it's a

slice of lean ham and a piece of fruit.

Don't know if these suggestions will help you or not. Just know they do

well for me. I had the cereal breakfast this morning, and my 1.5 hour

glucose level was 103.

Believe me, Jan. I know how lucky I am to be able to handle carbs. I'm

thankful to my doctor for that because I think it may well have a lot to do

with early diagnosis. Given my family history, he had been testing me every

three months for almost three years before my diagnosis.

Anyway, if you can give me some kind of idea how many grams of carbs you'd

want in a breakfast, I'll keep my eyes open for you as I go through

cookbooks.

:If you don't mind " thinking outside the box " about the appropriate

foods for breakfast, what about tuna patties or salmon patties. Canned

salmon is cheaper than bacon and has much less fat and much more omega fatty

acid. Actually mixing up a tuna salad of tuna, eggs, mustard (instead of

mayonnaise) and any other ingredients that sound good to you (mushrooms,

peppers, etc) is also good. My family regards me as a nut when preparing

tuna salad as I am a firm believer that anything you like (in my case ground

dill pickles, onions, spices, Worcestershire sauce etc.) is fair game to be

included. Not everyone shares my interest in a " medley of flavors " in a

dish it seems. This dish is good any time of day. As far as recipes, I am

afraid that I rely on by " eyeball " and gut feel to determine the relative

quantity of each ingredient to include.

Have lunch for breakfast - or my quickie is a beaten egg in a bowl sprayed

with Pam, sprinkled with 2%milk grated sharp cheddar (Kraft), nuked 45-60

secs on a piece of whole grain 9 g carb, low fat yummy soy bread. Or peanut

butter (natural - just peanuts and salt) on the same 9 g. carb bread.

Teri, you are so sweet to do that.

I can eat about 6 at breakfast. I eat 3 little teeny tasteless 2carb apiece

crackers (holgrain). I have some bran-a-crisp crackers on order, will see

what they taste like. There's some recipes for those in Bernstein's book

where you crumble them into things. I've tried some other crackers, but

whammo up I go.

I've also ordered a package of the low carb tortillas, to see if they would

be any good -- that would at least give me a burrito option!

How about cottage cheese? Or a different high fiber cereal like Fiber One

from General Mills? Be sure to add some protein (like the c. cheese) to

your cereal meal so that you don't do another BG spike.

Hey Barb, you think like I do.

I spray a large soup cup with Pam, fork stir an egg or two, and a slice of

cheese, after nuking for 40-60 seconds, it fork cuts and does the trick!

Got to find that 9 gram bread, please don't tell me its homemade!
