My now 10 year old son was recently admitted into the ICU only back this last February 14th to finally recover amazingly from a miracle of prayers. Please visit http://www.carepages.com/carepages/alexbradshaw to learn more about the effects and the miracle of how my son survived.

It all started:

2-14-11 barely made it into the ER before going into septic shalk and then cardiac arrest twice. We are thankful to the St. Frances ER for stabilizing after 18 minutes of CPR. He was then rushed to bridge Childrens Hospital and operated on with us being told he may not make it. In order to save 's life...they removed his entire colon, appendix and several inches of his small intestines.

After years and years of them telling me that was just holding in his bowel movements...the surgeon assured me that my sons colon was abnormal and almost completely dead along with part of his small intestines. Since was 18 months old; he was first placed on Miralax...and then so things would be less expensive...they placed on PEO. After being on doses of 17mg twice or more a day.... still could not have bowel movements. He would cry and feel embarrassed having to wear pull-ups and having minor accidents. It took him until he was 9 1/2 until the unthinkable happened above.

missed a ton of school from not feeling well...I never had any idea how bad it really felt....He stayed home the week before from just not feeling well. I took him to a naturalpathic doctor to have him tested for food allergies out of desperation and even visited the nurse practitioner who ran the special clinic on constipation on that Friday. What did they do...nothing but send us home doing a milk & mallasis enema and magnesium citrate that weekend AGAIN!!! had to go to school on February 14th because of his classroom Valentines party. The teachers called me because he seemed lethargic and declined eating that day. As soon as we got home he started vomiting profusely dark brown substance. He mentioned he had part of a brownie...but only to find out later from the ER doctor he was vomiting his stool. Later that night... seemed lethargic and his eyes started rolling back into his head. His stomach felt like it was going to explode. I rushed him into the nearest ER only for him to hang on until I wheeled him in for to go into cardiac arrest.

2-17-11 was then operated on 2 days later...also pulling through surgery. He is my tough cookie! His blood pressure has been extremely low and recently stabilized on 2-18. The hospital had to do several kidney dialysis to help stabilize due to renal failure.

He has a couple more surgery's to undergo before we know what the outcome will be and to determine him mentally.

For years....I had a terrible feeling that something was just not right with my son on so much Miralax and PEO and still not being able to have any bowel movements. I have been reading all the side effects and never realized that the way my son was acting had anything to do with this medication.

was depressed, overwhelmed, at the age of 6 suicidal and I had to start visiting a therapist. He would often be in a good mood and then suddenly the meanest little stinker in the world. He would be loving one moment and then totally distant the next. His stomach was distended and he had tons of gas he just couldn't release. My sweet little boy became more challenging as the years went by.

They said 's magnesium was extremely high and could not determine a cause or diagnosis to why he went into septic shalk. This is the most frustrating thing for us to swallow. I started doing research on his meds trying to figure things out. Any help PLEASE...

They consider our miracle child...He basically died and was brought back and survived...we still are all amazed that he is not brain damaged and can walk again. That was the hardest part to accept.

If there are any other cases out there similar to ours...Please help us. I want to make sure that that nurse practitioner does not make this mistake on any other children out there.

Just an FYI...A year before....a GI doctor had warned us that was so compacted that he has seen a child die...so what does he do...send us down to their specialized constipation clinic to a " Nurse Practitioner " ....I just don't get it!

Since then....my son -- Steph Bradshaw

This sounds alarmingly like our son...up til the point of vomiting his stool. Our naturopath warned of us this, told us our ds needed surgery (for the same thing as your son, plus a colostomy). We headed out of the country for care and eventually a cure. No one in the US would listen and we tried....We tried 10 different hospitals around the country only to find someone in Mexico. I'm SO sorry your son had to endure this. My heart is racing at your story; it's so damn maddening. WHEN WILL DOCTORS LISTEN??? When will they stop? Wow..........I'm so sorry..............I do have some infor for you

Ileus / paralytic conditon to the bowels : putting the bowel to sleep

we suspect it deadens the nerves, and kills tissues, after reading this raises red flags for sure

Please read the files section of this group, you may want to print and give these to your medical professionals to heighten their awareness. I would most certainly contact the FDA 1-800-FDA-1088 MedWatch and report your reaction.

Type in any word and hit search mail and posts will come up about the topic, so if your looking for, side affects, type in side affects, or ileus, etc.

I studied these FDA adverse reactionsn WITH my Physician's to save time of looking each symptom up to better understand what this medication has done.

It depletes the following

electrolytes

magnesium

potassium

calcium

water

read the article fatal disnatremia caused by elective colonoscopy in the files section

Upon researching this in 2001, there were only 6 submisssions in the FDA's data bank, there are 1,966 now.

Jeanie

feel free to e-mail me off group if you'd like

It could be that he was just holding back then. Ask your Physican how he knows that this medication didn't do this to his colon. Give him the Material Safety Data sheet.............it burns the skin, see files section or look up MSDS for polyethylene glycol. You need to speak to a Pharmacologist for expert opinions, you may need them someday.............the manufacturer states never to take more 2 weeks...........they choose to use off label against the manufacturer's advice

the surgeon assured me that my sons colon was abnormal and almost completely dead along with part of his small intestines.

This is so disturbing and sad to read!

My son had been rx'd miralax when he was four I think it was... he's now 14.

But I just remember how initially, yeah, he produced some soft stools and even

he proclaimed that they call the product miralax because " it's a miracle! " . But

it was shortly thereafter that it seemed as if his bowels stopped working. We

had to give him enemas in order to go because otherwise all of the PEG and stool

just stayed inside of him. He began to look pale and acted strangely. Pale

skin, dark circles under his eyes.

Fortunately I had put two and two together regarding the timing of it all and

got him off of the product after a few months of being on it. His bowels began

to return to normal over time and a lot of work to help him (digestively and

with routines).

I am just so sorry that had to go through that surgery and even though he

lived, his life will never be the same will it? My heart goes out to him and

your family.

Your son is quite inspirational. I wish him a speedy recovery. To: miralax Sent: Tuesday, September 6, 2011 7:09 PMSubject: Re: Re: My 9 Year old almost DIED

Hi ,That's very interesting. One of the things everyone always told me was how pale my son looked and how dark the circles were under his eyes. Until now...I just assumed that was my how my son looked since that is all I have ever known. He has been on miralax since he was 18 months old. Now I know there are two more symptoms to add to my list. Thank you for your input.

Just an FYI to all... Since my son's surgery in February....he had to have an ostomy bag. Just recently on August 22nd a few days before his 10th birthday...the surgeon was able to connect my sons small intestines to his rectum and reverse his ileostomy. will have years to recoop from all that has happened... but he is one of the strongest kids I know and now talks about wanting to be a doctor since he has experienced all the challenges and knows that he can help other kids in his same situation.

This is so disturbing and sad to read!

My son had been rx'd miralax when he was four I think it was... he's now 14. But I just remember how initially, yeah, he produced some soft stools and even he proclaimed that they call the product miralax because "it's a miracle!". But it was shortly thereafter that it seemed as if his bowels stopped working. We had to give him enemas in order to go because otherwise all of the PEG and stool just stayed inside of him. He began to look pale and acted strangely. Pale skin, dark circles under his eyes.

Fortunately I had put two and two together regarding the timing of it all and got him off of the product after a few months of being on it. His bowels began to return to normal over time and a lot of work to help him (digestively and with routines).

I am just so sorry that had to go through that surgery and even though he lived, his life will never be the same will it? My heart goes out to him and your family.

To hear of all the surgeries your children have been through, scares the hell out of me. More power to you for absolutely doing what is best for your child, but I am so glad we were blessed with the International Biocare Hospital in Mexico. They told me our son was to have the same surgery all of you are generally taking about and I wouldn't hear of it. My prayers and heart go out to you and your kids having been through all that. I thank God that we were able to avoid it. Hi ,That's very interesting. One of the things everyone always told me was how pale my son looked and how dark the circles were under his eyes. The manufacturer states not to be on this medication for more than 2 weeks. What are these people thinking? You need to call the company and ask them the ill effects of what these doctors think they're doing.

Years ago, it was by presription and I had a lawyer tell me this, "they know darn well they're filling prescriptions for children"

Also, what is PEO?

He mentioned he had part of a brownie...but only to find out

later from the ER doctor he was vomiting his stool.

Just an FYI...A year before....a GI doctor had warned us that was so compacted that he has seen a child die...so what does he do...send us down to their specialized constipation clinic to a "Nurse Practitioner"....I just don't get it!

Since then....my son --
