AFIB questions

Hi,

I'm new to this group. Was diagnosed with AFIB about 4 years ago, but my

doctors seem to know little about it. Recently moved to Ohio and the new

doctor was horrified that I wasn't on Coumadin. So, I'm on it now.

I have a lot of swelling from water retention in my lower legs. Does anyone

know if daily walkiing would help improve the circulation? Has anyone

experienced getting out of AFIB? They did try a cardioversion on me right

after they discovered the condition, but it didn't change anything.

Just curious to know what others are doing to live with this or improve life

and health with it.

Hello Joe, and welcome to eGroupe.

It they didn't have you stabilized on coumadin before your try of

cardioversion it is probably a good thing that it didn't work. I

spent most of my life with AF and was never on coumadin, but I was

rarely in AF over 48 hrs. at a time. The big danger of blood clots

is after being in AF for a extended time, then converting to a NSR.

That tends to flush out the heart and any clots that might of formed

there during AF.

It sounds like the walking would do you a lot of good, but you should

get this information from your doctor.

Your treatment options would somewhat depend on your age and physical

condition. Dofetilide which is rather new is getting some good

reviews from the eGroupe member users. I was cured of AF 32 months

ago at the age of 64 with the Maze surgery, but it is not for all

people.

Hope you enjoy the eGroupes board and the new year brings you NSR.

When I had water retention in my ankles, my doc said to do exercises

with the legs by hanging them down and circling my ankle 10 times to

left, then 10 to the right, then to trace the outline of the alphabet

with my toes in the air. Also, have you been put on a diuretic for the

swelling? If not, eat apples, (nature's diuretic). But if you get put

on the medication, make sure you don't loose too much

magnesium/calcium and/or potassium, and if you are going to talk to

your doc about adding supplements.

Certainly daily walking helps the circulation and is a good idea if you feel

up to it. Check with your doctor, though. As far as the swelling is

concerned, I always drink a lot of fluid (about one ounce per day per pound

of body weight) and the more I drink the more fluid I give up. Once again I

do this with my doctor's knowledge. Welcome to the group. Good luck!
