,

I was eager to take extra zinc soon after being diagnosed (having read about

some of the same benefits you discussed). However, two doctors I consulted

both told me not only NOT to take extra zinc, but to avoid a multivitamin

because it contained various metals. Since then, I have taken my supplements

separately, rather than in a comprehensive multi, for this reason. If anyone

has evidence that this is an overreaction, and that it is safe for PSCers to

take some zinc (which among other things I have read helps to mitigate

somewhat the effects of cirrhosis), please let us know. Ezra

The info I read said the same thing about avoiding the metals, but when I

mentioned it to my GI, he said that multivitamins is such a low

concentration that it is no big deal. I was going to start taking them

again, but maybe I will wait and see.

Ezra,

I don't understand exactly what you mean. I know about the dangers of

getting too much of vitamins etc. But do you get metals from just taking

zink and no other supplements (except for example milk thistle)? I

understand that that is what you trying to say but you just take zinc

then??? So how do you get the other metals then?

Can you or anybody else explain a bit more about how it works?

And should we PSC-ers be extra carefull about metals?

I, too, was told to avoid multivitamins with minerals at the time I was listed

for tx. And after tx, I have been told to take a multivitamin, but not with

minerals. I think it is important for us to ask our docs before assuming

something is safe. Just my 2 cents.

Not sure? I do know that Zinc and copper balance each other and if you are deficient in zinc, your copper level rises and you see aggression

What can you tell me about Zinc supplementation? I ask because this is something my sons one Pediatrician has suggested but upon reading that Zinc can cause constipation I worry about trying it again. Does anyone know if Zinc causes constipation?

In order to supplement zinc in a child, I think you should have some signs of a

need. White spots on fingernails? Yep -- zinc levels are low. Slow healing of

bug bites? Yep -- add zinc.

Since this particular Pediatrician isn't the best at going into detail all I can

tell you is that he has been talking about it for awhile now. One of the things

he mentioned was dryness at the knees. But more recently my son had some

bloodwork done and something from those results made this Pediatrician check

again his knees and fingernails and he suggested trying it. So that is why I

considered it. It could also be the aggression issue made the Dr. think Zinc

too.

Many parents complain of aggression in their child after taking PEG, I'm not sure if it depletes Zinc but according to the FDA adverse reactions, it depletes, calcium, potassium, magnesium, electrolytes, and water, so, with that said, It probably wouldn't be too out of suspicion to imagine the others would go along with it? I guess it makes sense, if it lowered the zinc, the copper would rise and you would see aggression............the question is? Why do we see this behavior for years later????

He's on the right track then. Best if you take zinc at bedtime - away from

other supplements.

I tried that because I heard the same thing. But turns out for my son it did

not work. Although it may now I am not willing to take the chance. See the

first time my son tried it I only gave him the 3mg and he was sooooo hyper after

taking it I had to lower the dose alot. I am not sure what it is about these

minerals that affect my son so much.

I also wanted to thank you for all the advice. As you can tell I have tried

zinc with my son and stopped because I wasn't too sure about it and with my sons

constipation I worried it may worsen it. I would like to try magnesium but my

son is sensitive to so many magnesium based supplements and even epsom salts

that I worry about using that too. Thanks again for all the advice.

What happens with the epsom salt baths? My dd gets lethargic if she takes one and it was LeeAnn that pointed out that it has sulfer in it. Low and behold her tests from Pfeiffer came back high in sulfer which would be why she reacted to epsom salts that way. I never knew there was sulfer in epsom salts but it wasn't the magnesium.

I never gave my son epsom salt baths since they irritate my skin and my sons reactions to different form of Magnesium I had the Pediatrician muscle test them before even trying them and every brand we tried showed sensitivity. Now after what you wrote I realize my reaction could very well be due to sulfur since I am sulfur sensitive.

I have looked and looked and this was the only brand I could find that I could

actually give him a small dose. Most pills, tablets, etc are way to high in

dosage. If I rembember right the lowest was around 25 to 30 mg. This

particular one is a liquid and I can give under 1 mg and slowly work the dosage

up. Which is good due to his reaction to 3 mg. I am not even sure that the

hyper response to it is a bad thing. I know alot of kids have this response with

other things like epsom salt baths for instance due to it pulling the heavy

metals out of the body. Then after a week or two it subsides. This is what the

company told me about the zinc when I called. Now I am not sure if he is right

but I am also not convinced the zinc responce was a bad thing either. So I cut

the dose way down and no hyper response.

It seems like you tend to say that most everything creates a hyper response for

your son. I'd like to help you in the right direction. What item(s) have NOT

had a hyper response? Is he taking calcium? That may be the culpert.

No he doesn't take calcium. But I didn't notice that I was saying everything

creates a hyper response. If you mean the epsom salts as one, I was referring

to what another Mom who does Bio medical treatments told me about her sons

reaction to epsom salts. We have never used epsom salts. What other things

rather than zinc did I say caused a hyper response in my son? Maybe I missed

something and how does calcium help with this reaction? Or if this is a common

reaction does it mean someone is low on calcium? I am confused now. LOL.

Also you asked what doesn't cause a hyper response. It seems that different

things cause different reactions like Bromelain was causing rashes, Nystatin

made him sick to his stomach, Singulair caused daily mood swings and meltdowns,

Zirtec caused his OCD to escalate. Then other things like the Multivitamin he

takes and the many different Probiotics we tried have shown intolerance but I

cannot name specifics since while taking these he was seeing the Pediatrician

who did muscle testing and he would test these thing regularly to see if he was

tolerating them. But alot of foods cause mood and behavior issues like anger,

aggression, trouble focusing. He is on a very limited diet for this and his

Leaky Gut. Then there are seasonal pollen allergies which just change his mood

and personality to the point I thought he had some sort of mood disorder till he

was allergy tested and those moods coincided with the pollen allergies. Which I

never knew he had due to his atypical reaction to them. He is allergic to mold

too so yeast causes problems when he has too much like sleep issues and some

behavior problems too.

I suppose this would be a good time to try Senna, Shaklee Herblax would be a great product!
