Guest guest
When I was in 6th grade the boys who hated me decided to call me Camay. Like the soap. I cringe when I think of it. I can hardly say the word. I told my son about it and he called me that, just once. I gave him one of my famous hard glares and told him never to do it again. Usually, if people are going to misguess my name it comes out something funny like Carmel or Carlotta. The autistic young man from the bus, I mentioned in one of my autispotting posts, the one in the cape. I finally got to talk to him again. I still think he is on the spectrum. He interviews people on the bus in order to take his mind off of his motion sickness. He asks them all kinds of questions. I just happened to be his " victim " the first time I met him. I wanted his name and so after we got off the bus, instead of disappearing without a backwards glance, he stopped to say something to me and we walked together for a bit since we were going the same direction. I asked his name and then I told him mine. He said he wouldn't remember it. I said, you could link it to Chameleon or Camellia. He said, it wouldn't work because in his head I was already " apartment manager lady carrying big canvas " (these were features of our first conversation) I said, well, you can call me " canvas lady " , I won't mind. The next day he remembered my name. That was nice. I remembered his because it is the name of one of my brothers. He cut his hair, the pretty curls were gone. He said that he had been interested in Biology, but realized that biology wasn't going to work for him because he lost points on a test for spelling " acshelminthes " wrong. I thought to myself, " he's pronouncing it wrong...it's Ash-hel-MIN-these, not Ash-HEL-min-these " He's a statistics major. " But that was because Spanish is so much more consistent than English. The way a word is spelled is the way it is pronounced. J is usually aspirated (if that is the correct term), like the " ho " in Santa's ho-ho-ho but with a breath added rather like the German " ach " (as in " Ach du lieber! " ). In an effort to " anglecize " their pronunciation of my name, the family did their best to produce their version of an English J sound, which turned out to be like the English Y sound. (Which definitely is part of the English J sound, in a way, I think.) In Spanish, an e at the end of a word is always pronounced. Hence: YAH-nay. Guest guest
Hey if we call her Gane then if she ever gets arrested for civil disobedience again we can say that Gane is in gaol. :-) I hope we never have to say that, though. > > > >Jane > > How bout " Gane " > > -jypsy
