Hi, Jan. I'm not sure, and I'm not a doc or an expert by any means, but

Vicki and I are both thin 1.5's and our story sounds a like like yours.

Hopefully, Vicki won't mind my adding her here, because she is out of town.

Vicki's on meds and a little insulin, and I'm on insulin only - once again

YMMV, even for type 1.5 or 3. This is the first I've heard of type 3, but

perhaps it means that there are enough of us, they had to give it a proper

designation.

No, my doc never got into it. My DE, who's a type 1 herself, said she calls

thin type 2's, type 1.5, because we're somewhere in the middle and not

typical of the 2's who are overweight and improve from weight loss. I

suppose it's possible we are part of the 15% who aren't Syndrome X? You're

right, it's very confusing, and I don't understand it - I just plug along

with what seems to work for me.

Best idea is to just plug along. The web sites I just looked at said Type

III is gestational -- definitely not going on here. And mentioned a Type

IV, which may be what she meant -- included drug-induced or genetic

influences or other stuff. A catch all -- sounds like me - drug-induced and

some genetic stuff too.

Whatever. I go back in to see my diabetes educator in a little while, and

she will probably know better what is happening after seeing my records for

the last two months.

Jan, the terminology keeps changing, but it surely sounds like you and your

doctor are on the right track, looking at your situation as a potential type

1.5. I'm glad you're having the C-peptide test performed soon. Too often,

IMO, doctors diagnose which type we are just based on our age at diagnosis.

As Bob used to say, we diabetics are spread all along the diabetes

continuum. Congratulations on your success with the diet. Ice cream might be

a good snack for you. It combines fats with milk sugars, which should give a

gentle but long-lasting boost to your glucose levels when you drop too low.

I went out tonight and got a container of ice cream, the real stuff.

But decided to wait until tomorrow, and then maybe do a test before, and

then 1 hour after, and see what happens.

The thought of REAL ice cream will make up for losing baked potatos I think!
