I have no insurance coverage for med. Since my surgery no one will touch me

with a ten foot pole. I do have health but it is at a cost of $1,000 a month and

that is through my husbands employer.

I get med's free, and this is what I did. I researched my med's on the

computer by typing in the name in the search engine, I also asked at the doctor

office if they knew who made the ones I could not find out about. Then I filled

out the form on line by down loading them and printing them out. All of the ones

I need had to first have a copy of my 1040 from the previous year sent to them

along with my application that was signed by my doctors office personnel.

From then on I tell a certain nurse at my primary doctor's office (I asked the

front office who handled this) about 6 weeks before I am running out, she mails

me the paper work, I fill it out, mail it back, she sit off and usually about 4

weeks after that I get 3 months worth in the mail. Once a year I have to send in

the new 1040 and when the amount that I take changes that does cause a minor

glitch in the system but them there is usually samples.

For example I take a med called DDAVP which is rare and there is only one endo

in town (a town of 300,000) that even carries it, and my doc office called them

to get me samples when they increased me by a lot and my new supply was not

here. If not for the free stuff I don't know what I would do! this one med is

$3,000 at the rate I am taking per month right now. This new medicare part B is

causingme a real headache. If you need more help just let me know. Gwen

What medications do you take ? You can always

google the name and manufactuer of the medication and

assistance program and see what pops up.

Its ok to vent about things. This is a very important subject that

we have dealt with at one time or another. Getting our pain meds

that we need. My doc says its a shame because we are really in pain

and they have to be careful of what they prescribe. They worry that

they will be looked into for prescribing to many drugs. This all

because someone wants to get high off of pain meds.

I worked with a woman that was like that. She had been blacklisted

at the er. She had a new plan calling dentist around telling them

she had a tooth that needed worked on and would make an appointment

with them. Just as she was almost through as an after thought she

would ask if it was possible for her to get some pain meds till her

appointment. All the calling around for 15 pills heck wouldnt know

why the bother. Guess thats where we are different we are dependent

of our pain meds.I know she stole muscle relaxors from my purse. I

always keep a count on my meds for the pharmacy can make mistakes of

not give you the right amount. I discoverd one night that I had four

missing. I knew who had taken them.

That is why I go to a pain clinic that way I dont have to get all

the run around of things and make a mess of it.

Hi , thanks for saying that. It really frustrating to me

and I am sick of pain patients being portrayed by some as just a

bunch of people seeking opiate pain relievers. It is just not true. I

wish I could do something to dispel this myth. Yes I am tired of

the government of any sort intruding into my and every ones health

care. It is none of their damn business. I am afraid to ask my MD for

either more or breakthrough meds , I know he is afraid of the DEA

investigating him . What I do not understand is why? There are much

more important things to worry about than a bunch of disabled people

getting relief however temporary and safely form a drug that some

people do not like. I really want ot write about it some where but

where and how.

I really need some thing for break through pain but do not even know

how to ask. Also I am having surgery at least my surgeon is going ot

prescribe diliadid for me as it is going to be very pain full

and she will be cutting through muscle and moving a nerve under it .

I do not have much body fat as of all things my methadone allows

me to exorcise and stay in shape it is important to me and my

mental health . I am very anxious about surgery too it is the 7th

and I will not be able to do much with my right arm. So I am looking

for a used nordi trak I can use to exercise my legs and stay in some

aerobic shape if i can.,

Does any one have any advice on how to approach a MD and ask for

or explain the need for more pain relief I am using more

Naprosin almost every day and it is not good to do. .It already is

making my stomach upset in the month I have been taking it .

Thanks Rick

Does any one have any advice on how to approach a MD and ask for or

explain the need for more pain relief

Hi Rick:

I've found that it is often the best approach to talk to your doctor

about your symptoms, lifestyle and needs, and then let him/her make

recommendations for how to deal with those medically, rather than

asking for " more pain meds " or a specific medication.

For example, to describe your breakthrough pain, you could say

something like, " I'm finding that on average, my pain is fairly well

controlled with X medications, but I'm having spikes of more extreme

pain a couple of times a week that my regular meds don't control,

and those spikes are really interfering with my ability to

function. I can't walk/sleep/work (whatever it is that fits for

you) when they happen, and they last for X number of hours/days at a

time. What are my options for dealing with these pain flares

medically? "

Then the doctor can make a recommendation or give you several

options, and you can talk about what you like or don't like about

those options. If s/he recommends something that you've tried that

hasn't worked, say so! If s/he recommends something that you are

worried about - like lots of tylenol and you're worried about liver

problems, then ask " What about the effects on my liver? Are there

other options that I wouldn't have to worry about liver damage

with? " You don't have to take their first recommendation - keep the

dialog open and ask questions, but stay open to suggestions and work

with your doctor cooperatively until you get something you're happy

with. And remember that they might have a suggestion you've never

heard of! My doctor recommended one drug I'd never heard of that

has been a life-saver for me....

But, one thought Rick: When you say that you are having to take more

meds every single day, you're not describing breakthrough pain. It

sounds like your chronic pain itself is not being adequately covered

by whatever meds you're taking on a daily basis. If this is the

case, then describe that situation accurately. Say something

like, " I'm finding that my pain levels are consistently more than my

meds are able to handle. I'm having to take naprosyn every single

day, and besides the fact that it's not covering the pain, I'm

worried about the effect it is having on my stomach (or whatever it

is that you don't like about it.) My pain is consistently at a

level that it is interfering with my daily ability to function - I

can't do x, y, and z (insert whatever activities are being limited

by your pain - work, sleep, walking, etc etc). What are my options? "

The key is to describe your pain levels, describe how they change

throughout the day, and describe how they affect your ability to

function VERY CLEARLY. From that, your doctor then has an excellent

and document-able reason to make a recommendation to increase or

change your pain medications.

You're not going in asking for " more pain meds. " You're going in

describing a symptom and life need, and she or he is making the

medical diagnosis and recommendation. It works with most doctors

more effectively than any other approach, I've found. (Especially,

but not only, those with egos! <grin>)

Good luck, and don't be afraid to ask for what you need!

Let us know how it works!
