Guest guest
Hi all, I'm looking for some good evidence-based research or information to pass along to my daughter ped tomorrow. My daughter is 12 months old and began having increasing constipation problems as soon as we started her on solids. At around 8 months, the ped had me start her on Miralax (we'd tried daily prunes, pears, juice, etc. and it wasn't working and it was giving her very little variety to her diet). I was not comfortable with Miralax and asked about probiotics. I was told that Miralax is usually used and they were most comfortable using it as it is so commonly used. We started the miralax and it worked great, but I still hated giving it to her. I did eventually (about 2 months later) start her on a probiotic and stop the miralax. I found that if I fed her daily pureed blueberries or green beans it seemed to keep her going. We have had two bouts of constipation (one after bananas and now again after re-introducing yogurt), but she has done okay as long as I give her one of those homemade purees (no straining out skins) everyday. It is not as effective when she eats them whole. Probably, because she doesn't eat as much of them then and I'm not sure what will happen when she starts refusing the puree... I have also found that I'm needing to give her a glycerine suppository every few weeks because if she goes more than 48 hours without a poop it is really painful for her to go. I don't want to keep doing that either... So, what to do and what to tell my ped... I do not under any circumstance want to restart the miralax and I'm not sure how to keep her going. It just seems like there should be a REASON why she is having problems and I'd like to investigate the cause rather than treating the symptoms with a medication. Any thoughts or information? Thanks so much! Jen
Guest guest
After my DD was on Miralax for 8.5 months (from when she was nearly 18 months until she was 26 months) I found this group because I was uncomfortable with the notion of giving my child medication indefinitely. At her 2 year appointment, we discovered that she was failing to thrive (this was the last straw in a string of side-effects that had been plaguing her since we started her first on whole cow's milk then on Miralax.I told the pediatrician that I was no longer willing to give my child the Miralax and for her to suggest alternatives. Once she discovered that my DD hadn't grown at all in those crucial 8.5 months and had in fact lost a few ounces, she was VERY quick to back down.I'm sure people here can pass on studies to you that you can show your pediatrician, but my opinion is that you do not have to give your child Miralax if you don't want to, MOST ESPECIALLY if alternatives are working for you. It takes a while for the system to reset itself sometimes, so don't give up. I also gave my DD Fleet's Pediatric Glycerine Suppositories (but they came in a squeeze tube) if she hadn't gone by the 3rd day. We had to do this maybe a total of 4 or 5 times. We severely restricted her diet to ONLY those things we knew would not constipate her and we arrived at that restricted list through trial and error. We kept her on that diet for about a year and we are still careful with some things now (white flour, bananas, corn; we give her Lactose-Free milk and she's doing well on that). Are you asking for the information because you fear your pediatrician will insist on the Miralax "solution?" If s/he does that, simply ask for alternatives. The phrase I used was: "How did we treat constipation in young children before Miralax?" Good luck to you and please keep us posted. To: miralax Sent: Wed, June 1, 2011 10:26:29 AMSubject: what to tell the doctor... Guest guest
Is your Dr. just a regular Pediatrician. I would try to find a new Dr who was a Naturopathic or Homeopathic Dr. I wish I would have changed Pediatricians sooner because the last one had no clue as to what was really causing my sons issues and that may have compounded the problem. Also you said you used a probiotic but what about a digestive enzyme they can be helpful too. > > After my DD was on Miralax for 8.5 months (from when she was nearly 18 months > until she was 26 months) I found this group because I was uncomfortable with the > notion of giving my child medication indefinitely.
