Typically they use Lactulose, Kristalose, mineral oil (which I'm not a fan of petrochemicals) and Senna. Our Pharmacist recommended exlax chocolate squares which do work for overnight relief. People on this group have often said they use olive oil vs. mineral oil. Not exactly sure if the olive oil works but sounds more natural and lubricating to me?

It seems that diet changes and something to give them a little push seems to help. Watermelon is really good to have on hand as a must for constipated children.

5 days is long. Miralax states for occasional constipation but docs are recommending even when they're completely clogged which is very dangerous. It's like giving drano when the pipe is completely clogged. The Miralax has no where to go and becomes absorbed among other issues as it keeps pulling water and salt from the brain if not deficated immediately. The company also states not to give to children.

Sounds like you need to find someone who knows allergens like Chiros, stool samples and diagnostic stool testing. Holistic / Chiro / Alternative

My son is 8 yrs old and yes we have consulted a physician who suggested Miralax. Which in turn is what made me join this group. LOL. Not long after starting the Miralax my sons tics came back so I stopped using it. I had thought the fiber since it seems my son is like me because when he does go he doesn't strain it is just not regular and as I said sometimes 5 days in between. He is also sensitive to Magnesium products although we still haven't figured that one out yet and I am actually going to take him to a new Dr. this week since the current on isn't able to explain all these food and chemical sensitivities to me. He is also either allergic to milk or intolerant. Either way we are dairy free and prune juice didn't work either. He has sooo many intolerances it is hard to find anything that he can take. He cannot have apple juice and cherry juice doesn't work either. I will check out those other ones and see if any of them might work. Thanks for the

advice. Sorry I didn't put more details in my original post. I am also thinking of trying aloe vera juice. But will have to check into it to see if it is related to any of the things he is allergic too. He is also allergic to most seasonal pollens and things related to that. Plus his Dr. thinks he has Leaky Gut Syndrome. Thanks again. Oh and what is considered long periods? I thought 5 days was a long time. >> I think it's a stool softener you're looking for, when one hasn't gone, the > medical professionals don't typically recommend fiber if they haven't gone for > long periods, as it bulks it up more. I have been doing the watermelon. I was thinking of trying a softener, for a couple of days, to loosen an impaction, and follow it up with the oils, etc. Sent from my Verizon Wireless BlackBerrySender: miralax Date: Sun, 29 May 2011 03:58:47 -0700 (PDT)To: <miralax >ReplyTo: miralax Subject: Re: Stool softener specifically for children Typically they use Lactulose, Kristalose, mineral oil (which I'm not a fan of petrochemicals) and Senna. I am going to have to try the watermelon. But I have a question, how do you

give the oil? I too am not a fan of petrochemicals so I will try the olive oil

rather than the mineral oil. Also what are the signs that they are impacted?

I do Udo's oil or extra olive in his soups, after they have cooked, right before serving to him. I also do coconut oil, blended with coconut milk, frozen blueberries and banana and blend it all together to make an "ice cream. Or just add coconut oil (after cooking) into whatever porridge or oatmeal they eat. An xray showed that my son's intestines were all full but he has regular bowel movements so his intestines were still full. My son and I both have odd reactions to tomatoes- maybe from the acids in them?? Our tongues sort of sting and we get little bumps on them. It's a bummer because I am a huge fan of brushetta but it happens with raw tomatoes, cooked tomatoes, etc... in any form. Also happens with pineapples and canteloupe. Of all the vinegars, Apple cider and umeboshi vinegars are alkaline forming. But neither are as good in salad dressings as balsamic or red wine vinegars. :(

Couldn't it be that you have an intolerance or allergey to those foods. Those

are symptoms of it that you described.

Absolutely. But it doesn't happen every time we eat them. Yes it is odd and I am still trying to figure this out. Me and my son are the

same way with certain things. It was explained to me once that it all depends

on how full your cup is. Meaning if your body already had things in it you are

intolerant to then by adding that one other thing your cup as my sons Dr. put it

is full and therefore you get another symptom. But sometimes I just cannot

figure out what else we have had or been exposed to.
