Guest guest
A friend of mine does----she's out of Connecticut, I think (or is it Rhode Island), but I, do not. Kerry Regnier, MPH, RD, LDN Batavia, IL RD Blog Roll Yes, more RDs need to blog. Just about 2 years ago, I looked for blogs by RDs and I couldn't find any. I even posted on some lists (didn't know of this one then). Which is why I started mine. I don't post consistently and I don't have a huge readership, but I am starting to see my friends post on their blogs about how they are being more active, eating more fruits and vegetables, less processed foods, etc. Sure, it's not changing the nation, but when I start wondering why I even bother posting anything, then someone tells me how they have been encouraged to live better. Just curious, how many people on this list have a blog? Guest guest
I have one, but it's mainly about my efforts to become more green as a working mom. But I do post about my garden, shopping at the farmer's market, and some recipes from scratch that I've made. I have been considering a blog about a renal diet. I was thinking I could pick a different patient each day, get a 24 hour recall and post what they're eating, perhaps with their tricks to following the diet... for other patients to read. If I had a superconscientious pt (w/good technological skills), I'd mention that they start one and take pictures. > > hlbrewer.blogspot.com > > Mostly I post news articles about food/nutrition that peek my interest. > Not very active. I plan to write about a wide variety of nutrition topics and my first blog will be posted in a few days. I am hoping to write more for other companies about various nutrition topics in the future (hope to author a book someday!), and the blog has been a great way for me to " practice " my writing skills in a relaxed setting. Guest guest
I've just come onto this thread, but if I recall, the biggest reason for this listserv was to be able to discuss things not allowed on the ADA site. Anyone else remember that?? And, to answer your question, Madalyn, anyone who has a business should ALWAYS be promoting it in some way! The cool thing about signature lines is that they are allowed in ANY venue where posting is taking place, INCLUDING on the ADA site! Guest guest
About marketing: The real issue is that we should ALL be tooting our horns LOUDLY!!!!? Look at how many NON-RD's are getting the kudos that we should be getting.? So what if we advertise on any listserve -? if we do it in a classy manner.? We should be supporting each other.? There is plenty of work around for all of us and we don't need to feel threatened.? I found that clients buy in to your personality and what you have to say more than anything else.? If there were 20 of us standing in a row giving our pitch, ONE person is going to get picked because what they said was a comfortable fit for the person looking for nutrition guidance.? Just look at how many pizza parlors there are, or how Lowe's and Home Depot both stay in business and are usually across the street from each other. You buy a certain pizza because you like how it tastes, and you go to a certain hardware store because you like it better, not because they have really different hardware.? There is NO threat, and there is plenty of work. ? I truly feel that this is a time of truth for RD's - we are losing ground as nutrition experts and if we don't ban together to show that we are the authorities,? then no one should complain about how little they are paid or what NON-RD is giving out nutrition advice.? Robin's idea about the Oprah show is really fantastic, and we should all send e-mails to the show, not just one person.? Whew!? Emotional burst accomplished.? I feel better now.? :-)) Jacquelyn A. Guest guest
Actually, Monika, I believe it stems from the fact that ADA members belonging to the ADA sponsored listserves have been rapped in the knuckles so many times by the censors for discussing fees and wages and advertising in their lists, that now they think that the rule applies to every list or website that is either owned by RDs or where RDs post. I've been communicating in the EML Forum for the CD-HCF list and stating my views which are parallel to yours. Instead of whining about others - whether MDs, " nutritionists " , health-food pharmacies or gym trainers take our business, we should - hell, we MUST - advertise ourselves to the public. If we don't we'll be going where the dinosaurs went and in not too long a time either. I find the same is true at work, and it is those that give the longest reports and brag the most about their accomplishments that are promoted and thought to be the best (even when they're not). Digna Re: RD Blog Roll Why is this group so crazy scared of advertising???? How are people going to know who you are, where you are, and how to find you? It's not written in the stars in the sky!!! Guest guest
Digna, I hear what you say. But it gets to a point where we have to stop blaming ADA and start taking responsibility. And one of the most important things we can do, when we see another RD doing well at what s/he is doing...is support them for their effort, not diss them, criticize them, or gossip about them. If they do well, if they're on TV, if they're at a farmer's market, they're making all of us look good, creating opportunities for all of us. Sometimes we forget that the idea here is to help people eat better, feel better, make healthier choices. It's not to compete against each other to see who's on Oprah, who's got the spa job, who's getting more attention. There's enough good paying work for all of us. If we stop being so territorial. It's just that the person who works the hardest, is the one who's going to be presented with the opportunities. If people don't know what you do, how can they ask you to do it? Guest guest
Good posts and I agree an RD audience with Oprah would be a great idea. Who is best to recommend it?? Or should we all go to her website and suggest it. .. . that's probably the best approach. Re: Touting our horns: Just today, I got a client that willingly gave me his credit card info on the phone for $795. He said, " I respect and like working for people who are enthusiastic about what they do. " In a 10 minute phone conversation, he quickly picked that up in my voice. So, it is all about marketing and enjoying what you do! Guest guest
I am in total agreement with you, Monika. I think it's natural to fear critizism and maybe we all try not to " brag " about our achievements? for fear someone will think we're vain? I can't figure it out, but definitely we all need to tout the profession and in doing that we'll be helping everyone else out. Re: RD Blog Roll Digna, I hear what you say.
