Guest guest
My daughter is 6 (tomorrow!) and she also has neurogenic bowels. She has always had an issue with constipation. When she started kindergarten this year, she was using laxatives. They were very unpredictable and she had horrible cramping with them. She was also wearing a pullup because of this and she was very embarrassed and self conscious that the other kids would notice. Beginning in September, we started doing enemas. It was very hard at first and we were really close to giving up because it was so time consuming and emotionally draining for all of us. Finally, we started having successful results. We have to do it every night but it is just part of our nightly routine and takes 30 -45 min. is able to wear underwear and I know she feels physically so much better. (She wears a pad because she also caths & occasionally has a little leakage) I've heard from other parents about their kids having the MACE & Malone surgeries and they have been very happy. However, as long as the enemas are working we'll continue to do them. 's already had multiple surgeries so I would rather try everything else first. From what I've heard, with the surgical procedures they are basically like doing an enema but from the top down. I do need to do something dietary to help 's constipation - it's still an issue occasionally. Also, we live in Arizona so swimming is a must during the summer. She had to always wear a swimming diaper previously because of fear of an accident. I'm hoping this summer this won't be an issue. I think sometimes doctors get so desensitized that they don't realize all that people have to deal with on a daily basis. To them it's run of the mill so to speak and I think they forget the emotional and social impact it has on people's lives. Good luck and take care, Mom to , 6 & Riley
