Guest guest
Oh the cell phone dilemmas.....I tried every company except T-Mobile, so here's my two cents.? Of interest to you is that none came in when I was in the Rocky mountains,? except for Verizon.? These are the companies I was with -? Cellular One, Cingular, Sprint and Alltell. ? I couldn't even get reception in my office when I had Sprint so I had to get a land line and wait for the cell phone contract to be up.? Then, with Cingular, I had to stand in one corner of my house to get any reception, so imagine all phone calls in the corner!! ? I ended up making it a cozy corner, but was totally irritated at this.? Now I've been with Verizon for 3 years and absolutely love it - no complaints and no dropped calls. I have a plan with my two daughters - we share 2100 minutes - and it was the only one that had good reception in Missoula, Montana where one daughter lives. ? What I did was go to each company's website and find their maps of coverage, and how many towers they had.? I was gun shy to have to sign another contract and have bad service, so this is how I decided to go with Verizon.? Hope this helps! Jacqui Jacquelyn A. If you are what you eat, then dietitians are the doctors of the future Cell phone recommendations? Anybody have any major recommendations, pro or con for new cell phone service. I had a regular cell phone 10 -15 years ago, but 10 years ago, moved to where they don't work, so canceled it. I was paying about $35/month back then. Well, the last year, with some sporadic travels, needed one occasionally, so I've had a Tracfone. Was great cuz the phone cost about $30, no monthly fees the months I never bothered to use it. We use up minutes traveling only, but the cost per minute is a bit higher. Well, now needing one for my husband, who's rapidly using up tracfone minutes - he's needing it for work, every day, often hours a day. Ultimately probably more expensive than signing back on with a regular service. Rather than make costly mistakes, any general recommendations? Companies you love or hate? Services you love or hate? Guest guest
I LOVE this discussion because I am definitely in the market for a new cell phone company. Verizon has a good reputation for where I live, which is in the mountains, but my daughter has Sprint and she's the only person I've known who can drive up/down/across the mountain and not lose service. I'm just not sure which I can trust... Years ago, Cingular (now AT & T, then Cingular, and now I forget WHO they are, lol) was the best bet. Today I lose calls no matter where I am. Guest guest
Some companies, and I think it's Verizon, have a 30 day guarantee so if it doesn't work in your area you can return the phone for full refund. I got this at Costco when one g/son moved out, and it turned out in his current area he did not receive Verizon, so I was able to cancel it and get him another plan (oh, yeah, I'm the good grandma that spoils even the adult g/sons for as long as I can do it; my pleasure). Guest guest
Jan, I have been with U.S. Cellular for over 10 years and have had absolutely no problem with them. My advice is look at the companies serving your area and go with the one that has the best coverage. I live in Maine where service can be problematic as all remote areas have no towers, therefore no service. I also live near Mount Desert Island, lots of hills and service varies. Example. I rented a house 2 miles down the road from where I live now. In the rented house I received 5 bars, excellent service. I used my cell phone for all my long distance. I had a house built 2 miles down the road and I barely get 1 bar of service. It's not U.S. Cellular's fault, just the geography of the area I live in. Good luck! Guest guest
Margie, That's my problem. My g/sons' friends all want me for their g/mother, and some of the nicer ones got me. But although I'll feed them, loan them a bed when they need one, watch their pets, let them swim in my pool and listen to their problems, I've had to draw the line on paying for their cell phones. : ) D Cell phone recommendations? > > > > Anybody have any major recommendations, pro or con for new cell phone > > > > service. > > > > I had a regular cell phone 10 -15 years ago, but 10 years ago, moved to > > > > where they don't work, so canceled it. Guest guest
I have it and I know it is a national discount program. My local Atlanta store told me when I asked about disounts- I am also part of the National Board of Realtors but the AARP offered a discount. Call and speak to someone in business customer service/sales and ask for their national discount programs that large companies have- large employers have national accounts. I will try to locate a past bill and see if the discount code is listed. ...... Nodvin Re: Cell phone recommendations? Doesn't work. AT & T doesn't acknowledge the availability of the discount. Guest guest
Why, Merav? Some of us are old enough to take advantage of AARP, and need inexpensive and affordable cell phones. I think many members benefit from this both pesonally and for their business. The Subject is very specific so you can just not open it and junk it.... Love you too. It's nice to read you again here and there. I'd missed you. Guest guest
Thanks to everybody for your support, answers and insights. Now, Merav, maybe you don't need technology or cell phones to do your work as a dietitian, but for many of us, this is an integral part of the requirements we need to continue to work as an RD, when we're traveling but continue to work. I don't understand why you suggest it doesn't belong on an RD listserv? Jan Patenaude, RD, CLT PS. When I was out of the country, Yahoo phone, at 1 cents a minute allowed me to stay in touch with my US customers as long as I had a high speed internet connection. Otherwise, a long distance call would have easily cost up to $35/hour, instead of 60 cents per hour. In a message dated 7/25/2008 4:20:39 P.M. Guest guest
I'm with Jan here. The title says " cell phone " . If you're not interested, hit delete. I don't mean to start a fight here, but how can we deteremine what is important to anyone. I enjoy every conversation, even ones that don't necessarily apply to me or dietetics, if I'm not interested or don't have the time, I simply delete it. And... I have Verizon, and have never had a lost call. Me and Husband have family plan... about $100/mo.. but we have never run out of minutes either. > > > > Thanks to everybody for your support, answers and insights. > > > Now, Merav, maybe you don't need technology or cell phones to do your work > as a dietitian, but for many of us, this is an integral part of the > requirements we need to continue to work as an RD, when we're traveling but > continue to > work. > > I don't understand why you suggest it doesn't belong on an RD listserv? > > Jan Patenaude, RD, CLT > PS. Guest guest
A great example of how we can help each other even if we're not interested in a topic - I DISLIKE peanut butter intensely. As a matter of fact, I never fed it to my children bc it makes me gag - anything w peanuts smell does. However, my daughters and grandchildren LOOOOOOOOOOVE peanut butter. I've read some of the posts, forwarded some they might benefit from, and yet deleted the majority, especially in the morning : ). I also have a company provided phone and plan, but have read every phone post since I have friends and family with their own phones, and thought I might find something of value to them here. And BTW - I have experience with almost every phone company - mine is Sprint, calls aren't dropped if you're in the city, but forget about driving past the airport, especially LAX (although in it it's fine), through freeway underpasses, or at my home - there are at least 4 or 5 in my exec team w the same problem, including the company's owner. My husband and one g/son have ATT (used to have Cingular) and my husband gets decent reception almost everywhere including at home. My g/son lives in the East Sierras and is surrounded by mountains, and he hardly gets reception at home, but it's the only company except for the small local one that gets reception in the area, and he can use the phone away from home which is actually what's important. The charges are reasonable and he has a good plan that includes a number of text messages and minutes he doesn't even use up for under $55/mo. My other g/son has Verizon, he lives here at my home, and does get reception although sometimes calls drop depending on where in the property he is, and I am unhappy with the plan cost, as it's gone up from the $50's to the $70's, and at one time it was double that until I fought them and demanded a credit. This had been due to commercial text messaging being sent that was from an independent company and he was receiving monthly - 2 of them - to the tune of $9.99 each message each month. It took us 6 months to get Verizon to reverse the charges and block that company's messages, and I had to contact that company repeatedly myself. Verizon was uncooperative and it wasn't until the end that a manager agreed to give me the company's phone numbers and emails for me to contact.
