IMHO. . . well, may just IMO. . .

They're strictly big business and will screw with any small farmer to get

more business. It was monsanto that had GMO seed - they found " their seed " in a

neighbor's field (spread by wind and the farmer did NOT want their gmo seed)

and they SUED the farmer for infringement on their patented seed. I don't

know the outcome, but do recall they nearly bankrupted him in court, if in fact

they didn't.

They do the same, destroying organic crops in Hawaii via

cross-contamination. Once an organic field is cross contaminated from a Monsanto

GMO crop, it

can NEVER revert to true organic again, and small organic farmers can be wiped

out.

Per in his well referenced book, Genetic Roulette:

" There are more than 20 side effects to cows listed on Monsanto's rbGH

label, including cystic ovaries, uterine disorders, decreased gestation period,

decreased cal birth weight and increased twinning rates. Udder infection

(mastitis) is the most widely reported. This painful disease increases the pus

(somatic cells) in milk; milk from treated cows has 19% more. To manage

infections and pus levels, farmers using rbGH typically treat their head with

extra

antibiotics, which increases antibiotic residues in milk.

Milk from cows treated with rbGH has higher levels of bovine growth hormone

) methionyl-rBST), a thyroid hormone )tri-iodothyroninie), lactose and long

chain fatty acids and less casein and short and median chain fatty acids. One

reviewer said that the composition changed " in directions detrimental to the

nutritional quality of milk. Health risks to individual consumers . . .

would thus depend on how much of the milk consumed was from cows treated with

[rbGH].

He references the above 2 paragraphs in this book with SEVEN different

medical references (6/7 are from medical journals). The above paragraphs are

from

page 157 of his 319 page book.

If you read Barbara Kingsolver's article " Fist in the Eye of God " - it's

also about how Monsanto wants to get third world countries to deplete their

stocks of natural seed in favor of Monsanto and then when crops won't produce

viable seed anymore, 3rd world farmers are stuck paying Monsanto for their

seed. Okay, 2 quick examples of a company that ADA somehow sees fit to endorse.

Thankfully, the HEN (Hunger and Environmental Nutritionists) DPG is actively

working to change some of the inaccurate position papers that have been

published by ADA in the past.

How frustrating that this nonsense is allowed to go on. It makes me so

angry.

Please tell me that organic milk is at least better.

And how they sued the farmer... unbelievable.

I'm so discouraged. I've been reading some articles that were sent to

me. Alot of the products I thought were good, really are owned by

companies that have ties to Monsanto.. so now I'm not sure about them.

ie. Kashi, Muir Glenn, Boca, Morningstar, Horizon. It's getting to the

point where I feel like I need to stop reading or else I won't have

anything to eat. *sigh*

Jen, don't get discouraged. I am just waking up to the idea of how

politicized our food supply is (although I must credit my undergraduate

community nutrition professor for trying to point this out to us 11 years

ago. It just didn't click back then). But there are people who are willing

to speak out about it, and if they hadn't I'd probably still be unaware.

Going organic isn't always the answer (as you pointed out, Horizon is

organic), but eating more local, less processed foods will be a more

immediate solution.

n Nestle and Pollan are two authors who come to mind on this

subject. I have not read their books (yet), but have heard a lot about them,

I follow n's blog and I've also read some of 's articles. Both

don't just present a problem, but are trying to work toward a solution.

That's something I really have come to appreciate.

n Nestle: Books: " Food Politics " and " What to Eat " Blog:

http://whattoeatbook.com

Pollan: Books: " The Omnivore's Dilemma " and " In Defense of Food "

Website: www.michaelpollan.com He also has his articles online, one which I

read about Monsanto is: http://www.michaelpollan.com/article.php?id=73. He

did a series of guest blog posts on Amazon:

http://www.omnivoracious.com/mpollan.html and here's a review of " In defense

of food "

http://www.thesimpledollar.com/2008/02/15/review-in-defense-of-food/

I have yet to join the Hunger and Environmental DPG, but it is my

understanding that there are many concerned RDs in that group.

Hope this helps.

Have a great weekend,

Renata

Thanks! I can't believe I've been oblivious to all of this. I do try to buy

organic but now I'm skeptical that it even is. I google the brand +Monsanto

to see if they are affiliated.

I did come across this article:

http://www.pubpat.org/monsantorejections.htm

I also read that their Roundup gm seeds patent is going to be running out

soon?? Does anyone know if that is true? because maybe then it won't be

renewed.

Just because a patent runs out doesn't mean a product goes off the market. What

it means that ANYONE, not just Monsanto, can produce what was previously

protected.

That's what generic drugs are. Copycat medications made more cheaply once the

patent holder was given sufficient time to recoup R and D costs without

competition.
