Hi!

Welcome to the wonderful world of Diabetes! ;-)

(bad joke, but Welcome!)

I'm new to the group, too, though not new to Diabetes.

Regarding your blood sugars: Ideally, you will want to

aim to keep them below 125, preferably as close to 100

range as you can get them. NOT EASY! They " experts "

used to say that damage to organs, cadiovascular

system, etc, started when blood sugars got about

150ish. NOW they are saying that the damage starts to

occur when blood sugars are elevated above 125 or so

for extended periods, so they've lowered their

diagnostic " figure " (used to be over 150) to reflect

that.

One thing you said JUMPED OUT at me... and I have to

warn you: Regarding LOW FAT FOODS: MOST ALL low fat

foods (or NO fat foods) have to make up for the lack

of TASTE that removing fat results in (fat is what is

primarily responsible for the FLAVOR we like in most

foods) Take it out and you have cardboard (my own

opinion ;-) )--- (NOW PAY ATTENTION TO THIS!:) TO MAKE

UP FOR THAT FLAVOR (FAT) REDUCTION, THEY ADD *SUGAR*

(SOME FORM THEREOF) TO *BOOST* THE FLAVOR AND MAKE THE

FOOD PALATABLE.

While you DO need to be careful of your fat intact,

PARTICULARLY the SATURATED varitety.. (and

" transfats " )--- You need to be even MORE careful of

high glycemic carbohydrates (and carbohydrates in

general).

One thing...actually perhaps the most important

thing..to help ME somewhat " normalize " my blood

sugars... was the read such things as (and these are

NOT for " Diabetics " , but the INFORMATION helped *ME*

more than the Amer. Diab. Association's " approved "

diet)... : Sugar Busters, Carbohydrate Addicts

Lifespan Diet (something like that. I don't have book

in front of me), Carbohydrate Addicts Heart Healthy

diet. You don't need to buy the books, just go look

at them at a library, and read the parts about the

relationship between high glycemic carbohydrates...and

insulin. (for example... a baked potato (LOADED with

nurtrients) will RAISE YOUR BLOOD SUGAR almost

instantly... more so than (a lack in nutrients) bowl

of ice cream. The " trick " is to become familiar with

those healthy carbs that WON'T cause such a rapid

blood sugar rise. That makes it EASIER to keep blood

sugars down where they NEED to be.... takes less

insulin or diab. pill. My 'gripe " with the books is

that I don't think they are as cautious with limiting

FATS as they should be.... I think you can use common

sense to NOT eat a big fatty steak...and to eat a more

lean piece of protein/meat.

The Amer. Diab. " approved " diet... did NOT work very

well (for ME)... but when I started being careful to

limit the HIGH GLYCEMIC foods/carbs, I started

(FINALLY!) losing weight. I also have ALOT to lose.

I take insulin..and I am EXTREMELY " resistent " to it.

For the last several months I've started exercising

like crazy, and that helps TOO. NOt only burns of

calories...it (somehow) helps make the body LESS

RESISTENT to the available insulin... Thus, you need

LESS injected insulin or diab. pills. (By limiting

the high glycemic carbs, I have cut my insulin intake

by some 3/4!!!!!! HUGE reduction, and I FEEL better

for it. Also...Insulin is PRIME hormone that directs

body to MAKE and STORE FAT! So if you can do with

LESS OF IT to maintain blood sugars, you will FEEL

BETTER...and WILL lose weight more easily *(though I

NEVER think losing weight is EASY... at least for ME.

I tend to hang on to every last OUNCE. :-(

I've lost 33 lbs or so, and have a LONG way to go, but

at least NOW, *I CAN*.... and before (I started

watching out for high glycemic foods)-- and

exercising,... I just didn't EVER lose, even with

pretty severe calorie restrictions. It was VERY

depressing! Feel so much BETTER now that FINALLY I

can start to help myself.

If you are NOT on one of the " Statin " drugs (to lower

cholesterol and TRIGLYCERIDES, ask your doc about

them). Diab. is LEADING CAUSE of cardiovascular

problems, and the " new trend " is to NOT WAIT until

it's a major problem BEFORE they start giving these

drugs to Diabetics. It's pretty miraculously lowered

MY (LDL/ " Bad " cholesterol and Triglycerides... These

often are HIGH in diabetics. Must be somehow effected

by elevated blood sugars...) Anyhow, if the first one

they try with you doens't work, try ANOTHER. (that's

what happened with me...)

AND...if you have trouble getting a test droplet of

blood, take a baby aspirin every day... it will help

THIN THE BLOOD.

When blood sugars are HIGH (or higher than they SHOULD

be)..the platelets get " sticky " ...and that leads to

vascular problems..and also makes it HARD to squeeze

out a drop of blood to put on the strip.

I hope you are checking your blood sugars fairly often

each day.... You need to keep a record of it so you

can track how various foods effect your blood sugar.

It will give you some idea what to AVOID after a

while..

I hope I didn't overwhelm you.

Many of these " tips " are things I had to learn MYSELF.

Also, GET YOURSELF TO A " diabetologist " . (that's an

endocrinologist who specializes in Diabetes) (and and

endocrinologist is usually an INTERNIST who

specializes in " endocrine " (hormone) problems)

Also...see if your local hospital has a Diab. Support

group. YOu will learn SO MUCH from others who have

already gone through what YOU are going through... And

they all no doubt will have invaluable " tips " (we all

seem to have to learn alot on our OWN as to what

works... so sharing is helpful)

(another reason to keep up with frequent testing, is

that you want to make sure your blood sugars are NOT

GOING *TOO LOW*... you can pass out!)

SO many tidbits to tell you, and I'm sure I've

already overwhelmed you. No doubt others have written

too.... :-)

A " general " doc is NOT TRAINED well enough to give you

the supervision and direction you need. GO FIND A

SPECIALIST... IF POSSIBLE, call local hospitals and

see if there IS a " certified diabetes educator " on

staff..and ask HER (him?) WHAT DOCTOR IN YOUR AREA IS

MOST ACTIVE AND QUALIFIED to treat Diab. patients. Ask

if t hey know of any DIABETOLOGISTS in the area...

Well, if I didn't " overwhelm you " earlier, I'm sure I

must have NOW! ;-)

And take it easy. You have LOTS to learn...and it

WILL take a while to absorb it all. It takes ALL of us

a while... I don't know ANYONE who " masters it

immediately: IT TAKES TIME. :-)

Oh yes,... more " obvious " info: Go sign up to be a

member of the AMERiCAN DIABETES ASSOCIATION. With your

membership you will receive a monthly magazine, called

DIABETES FORECAST. It has articles related to

diabetes (including NEW developments in the treatment

thereof)... and is pretty easy to read (not too

technical). You can prob. sign up to join Amer. Diab.

Assoc. over the web...(?).

Hope some of this information helps. IT *IS*

overwhelming.... so you certainly aren't alone in

feeling that way.

Good Luck!

Jeanne

Oh please do. I wish I could afford $6,500.00 To go to doctor Levin he

seems like a very nice man. But I want to have a baby and it would take

forever to save up that much. I will throughly investigate everything

though. I'll email you after my appointment.

Dear Suz,

I just wanted to write and give you a great big welcome, and to let

you know that I'm so sorry for everything you are going through. It

must be so frustrating for you to not have a definite diagnosis

after 6 years!

Yes, definitely, a lot of your symptoms sound like the things we go

through on a daily basis, and you have found a home that will

welcome you with open arms here! While my primary dx was

Fibromyalgia, I have other " issues " as well, as do other members of

the group. I have full body tendonitis, SI joint dysfuntion, and a

bulging disc. There are many different things that make up our pain

syndromes. On top of all of that, I also have bipolar II disorder.

How do we get through our days? One at a time! That sounds very

cliche, I know, but that's how we do it. You face each day as it

comes to you. There's no way of predicting whether you're going to

have a " good " or " bad " day symptom-wise, so trying to figure it out

becomes very frustrating very fast. There are things you can to

even out the odds though. Working with your doctor on a good

medication regimen (anti-depressants, pain meds, a good sleep med),

nutritional support, and attempting to get some form of exercise can

make a huge difference. Also, things like magnesium and malic acid

supplementation (with the knowledge and consent of your doctor!) can

also help.

I'm in full agreement with that you more than likely have a

serious candida infection running rampant through your body. This

would be the cause of the mouth sores and the thick mucus coating in

your mouth. Does your tongue also have a white, or patchy white

coating? Do you sometimes or always have a sore throat? Do you

have recurrent yeast infections? Have you taken a lot of

antibiotics? Systemic candida can be a HUGE problem for people with

Fibro, and it needs to be addressed. Once it has spread throughout

your body, it can create a whole assortment of problems, including

pain.

I hope for your sake that the doctors are wrong about a lot of your

dx'es. I've heard about a lot of those disorders, and they are

really horrible. Someone once suggested that I might have

ankylosing spondylitis, since I have severe SI joint problems, and

that sounds like an absolute nightmare. I can't imagine having the

vertebrae in my spine all fusing together like that. I pray that

you don't have something like that happen to you!

If you'd ever like to talk, please feel free to write me off forum.

I'd be more than happy to go into more detail with you about

managing Fibro....about nutrition, coping, anything you like.

Again, a warm welcome to the group.

All my best,

Jen

Arlene,

Welcome! Sorry I'm a little slow in writing. I had one of my blinding headaches

yesterday. I'm 52 years old and have FM/CFS, DDD in my neck and lower back and

nerve pain in my feet. I used to work as a pharmacist, so if you have med

questions, I'm your gal.

This is a really nice group. You can talk @ anything here.

Take care and feel better.

Hi Arlene,

You and I and proubly the rest of the group hates popping pills.

Every day at the same time never changes. There isn't to much we can do without

them the pain would be horrible

You said the herb was working for you tried it worked for awhile but after

awhile I could feel all the nerve endings and that was painful so I quit.

Why we where choosing to live like this to live in the pain is cruelty find a

fix there is no fix for me.

I hope you have a low pain day, I was supposed to go to work can't do it I

haven't been there all week. I'm going to have to try to get on disability. What

fun that will be the state I am in is one of the hardest to get it.

You have a good day. I wasn't much help just needed someone to talk to
