Guest guest
Can anyone refer me to a resource that explains what non RDs are allowed to do in regards to hospital or MNT services? We've had an RD eligible individual apply for a position. And secondly, I received a request from an undergrad whose food and nutrition degree requires internship over the summer. I need to know in what capacity they can be used. Thanks so much. Laurel MacKenzie, RD, LDN
Guest guest
They would be allowed to do clinical charting, but would need an RD to sign with on their notes, they could not teach any Medicare patients diabetes or renal diet, they could do community talks without issue. As far as I know this is the hinderences. allowable and nonallowable services by students or RDEs Can anyone refer me to a resource that explains what non RDs are allowed to do in regards to hospital or MNT services? Guest guest
Hi, You need to check with your State licensure board if you have one. In Maine, it is a class E crime to practice dietetics without a license. A dietitian who cosigns a note of a person not licensed is clearly abeting a crime and also will be punished as such by our AG's office. Our process here is that a graduate of an approved program who has a verification statement from the ADA that the field hours (here 900) are completed can apply for a temporary license. This license is good for one year for date of issuance and allows the holder to practice with all rights and responsibilities of a dietitian who holds a permanent license. A student who has completed a bachelor's degree awaiting internship does not qualify for the temporary license and therefore cannot screen, assess or educate patients. Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have further questions. Cece Ohmart,R.D.. L.D.
