I disagree. I have seen many home tube feeding pts do very well for

years on nothing but commercial tube feeding. N ScheerMSRDLD

I really hate to admit this, but the blenderized tube feeding diet isn't

necessarily dead. It hasn't been but a few months since we had our last home

blenderized tube feeding order here. Sometimes the cost of the commercial tube

feeding proucts is out of reach for some of our local islanders.

Many have never had a blender in their home, nor do they know how to use one.

We set up a time for staff to demonstrate how to blenderize and store the food.

I talk with them about sanitation and the importance of variety in what they

blend.

Personally, I think a combination of tube feeding and blenderizing would be

better for them. We have locals who hire people from the Philippines or other

parts of Asia to come in and care for a family member that is bed bound. These

people are generally not educated. Had one case where the caretaker left out

the protein from the blenderized tube feeding because, " It was too hard to

blend. " That was shortly after I arrived here. Found out about the patient

when he was admitted to the hospital with malnutrition. Family members were

up-set, but clueless.

We do give a pattern and recipe for the tube feeding. Since then, I made sure

that if we had a patient that was going home on a blenderized tube feeding diet,

that I would sit down with them and stress the importance of not leaving any

food group out of the diet. Would stress the importance of balanced meals,

variety and sanitation. I wouldn't be surprised to get orders for this in the

future either. So, I'm not sure that this diet is entirely dead yet...at least

on some islands and probably some third world countries as well. I remember

when was about six months ago.

ly, I've give my family clear instructions that I do NOT consider

canned TF formulas to be adequate " food " if I ever need a tube feeding.

I've often seen pasty, horrible skin improve just by adding some real, raw

pureed fruit and veges and/or juices.

I've yet to figure out how Ensure and those things ever provided the

appropriate antioxidants and food enzymes that " real " food does. And I've

rarely

seen a LT tube fed person really look " healthy " unless real foods get added.

Recall also a kid with bad asthma. Was on some canned TF formula. Mom wanted

to get him on some " real " food too - we added juiced spinach and carrots and

some other similar things, and constant nasal stuffiness and drainage

disappeared, and his irritability improved significantly.

Now, this was all over 12 years ago - haven't had to make any TF decisions

since then.
