Guest guest
We just finished a Miralax cleanout on our 2 year old. Doctor prescribed 3 adult doses over 8 hours. 2 year olds being how they are, it ended up being 3 adult doses over 18 hours. We used one fleet enema, waited 12 hours, then enemeez twice a day for 2 days. We definitely cleaned the little guy out very well. He seems to be doing A-OK. I am slowly lowering the Miralax down from 1 Adult dose per day. I want to make sure we don't drop the Miralax too low and allow the constipation to recur. Our target is to get down to approx 1 Teaspoon. Maybe 1 1/2 Teaspoon. This is what we believe to be the correct dose to keep him soft. I was anxoius about giving him that much Miralax, but he has never shown any adverse reactions. But sometimes that is what the job calls for. lol We were just at myelomeningocele clinic yesterday and found out that my son has some impaction. The doctors are in agreement that our dosage is correct, but the impacted material has probably been there quite some time. So, we have to do a clean out. this is our first clean out, AND I AM ANXIOUS about it. I've read for the past year about what many of the parents have gone through here. I'd be remiss if I weren't concerned. But my son has done very well on Miralax. I have every reason to believe that the cleanout will not affect him adversely. He has had an adult dose when he was much younger. Granted, we'll be giving him 3 adult doses over 8 hours. I also have to find an electrolye my son will drink in volume. We might do the cleanout Thursday (today is too busy), or we'll wait until Monday. If something does go sideways with the cleanout, I want to have the regular medical staff at my disposal, not the weekend shift. The Bowel and Bladder specialist and I spoke at great length about my concerns about Miralax, and then we had the same discussion again, in more detail, when we determined a clean out was necessary. I read your concern about the Miralax being in the bowel too long and being absorbed. Miralax doesn't stimulate the bowel. It won't speed the passage of waste through the bowels. The thing about Miralax is that the long chain polymer is designed so as to not be absorbed. That is really the key to Miralax being effective. If the stool takes too long to pass through the bowel, as many of our children suffer from, the bowel draws all the water out of the stool, the stool becomes like stone, and lodges in the bowel. Miralax, being a long chain polymer, IS NOT SUPPOSED* be absorbed, thus retaining water in the stool, keeping the stool soft and able to continue its slower than average journey through the bowel. Jack * It is my non-professional observation (from reading this forum) that children with leaky gut may absorb Miralax. There appears to be a signicant alignment of Miralax problems and leaky gut. So far she has severe bloating with the Miralax and nothing further, but i do fear that she may have been absorbing it before her "clean out" i am concerned about giving her the Miralax because it spends so much time it transit through her bowels, some days she gets both doses she has been prescibed and doesnt have a BM, and of course if it isnt coming out, where is it going. I would hate to worry over nothing but i would hate even more to be one of the parents on here who have children who have absorbed the Miralax and had horrible side effects. I know it is less likely to have a side effect then not to but i just fear that the longer she is on it and the more she is undoubtedly absorbing the worse her side effects will be. On the same hand the only reason she continues to take it is because I know the problems she will have not taking it currently pose more of a problem then not giving it to her. I truly understand your frustration and fear of continuing on Miralax. Is your daughter experiencing any trouble from the Miralax? If your only source of anxiety regarding Miralax is this forum, please keep in mind that the horror stories here are the minority (see note below). The majority of children taking Miralax do not experience adverse reactions. I take my son's health very seriously, but I have not been able detect any problems that stem from Miralax. Quite the contrary. My son is doing fantastic for a child with Spina Bifida, Chiari Malformation, and Hydrocephalus. Trust me, I have looked long and hard at this drug. I have a three year plan to get off of Miralax. And the main reason why we'll be getting off of it is mainly for social reasons. Due to my son's Spina Bifida, his sphincter doesn't work propely. When he is old enough, he'll have a surgical procedure that will allow him to completely empty his bowels once a day. As a secondary reason, I am not a proponent of medications. But if Miralax is the only way to regulate his bowels, and there are no adverse side effects presenting, it is the right choice for my son today. I am sure you are doing your absolute best to make the right decisions for your child. Continue to do so, and don't be overwhelmed. You might make mistakes, the doctors might make mistakes. It is possible no mistakes are made, and things still go poorly. You can't expect anything beyond your best efforts. It sucks that my child has problems. It sucks that if I would have made a different decision than what our doctor suggested, my son might not have Spina Bifida. But honestly, I can't imagine my son being anyone else than who he is. Of course the beginning of the appointment went the same as always,"tell me what brings you in" "tell me when it started" and the "what have you tried". I swear if i have to repeat this stuff one more time I'm going to scream it at the Dr. Each and every-time we see a new Dr. weather it is for the same thing or something new we end up on the conversation of Miralax. How im uncomfortable giving it to her and so on so forth about the "unknown side effect", and the lack of FDA approval. This Guy "the surgeon" i will call him. says well miralax isn't my favorite medication, but i think it works for her so you need to keep her on it.We recently found out that my 13 month old has a redundant colon, and it has been shown on all of the 6 KUB's she has had along with the Barium enema but wasnt found till my GI desided to read an xray himself rather the just reading the reports. This finding is what brought us to the office of "the surgeon" who tells us that yes she has a redundant colon and shows a picture of what it means. He describes a possible resection and how it may or may not help her constipation. So of course i ask well what do we do if we choose not to do this surgery that may not work. He says to me Your daughter will most likely be on Miralax the rest of her life.this brings me into the conversation i had with "the surgeon" about the "unknown side effects of Miralax" and the lack of FDA approval for the use of miralax with infants and children and he told me "every pediatrican confidently prescribes Miralax for constipation because its safe" and "the only reason it has not been approved by the fda for children is because no one wants to waste the time of money to prove what they already no and that is Miralax is safe" I wanted to scream at him then you put your 6 month old on it for the rest of there life and see how comfortable you are with it.The surgeon also desided he wanted to do a biopsy to check for Hertzsprung, he said he isnt 100 % sure she doesnt have it even though she doesnt show the classic "sickness" symptoms most children do. So now i have to worry about the Biopsy, the results and 1 of 2 possible surgeries and weather or not to go through with surgery if she doesnt have Hertzsprung. I dont know what to do im at the point now i almost prefer the risk of a surgery that might not work over the risk of her being on miralax indefinitely. Im so scared and dont know what else to do , the miralax works, she has 2 Bm's a day with a current dose of 1/2 cap miralax in 4oz of juice twice a day. I refuse to keep my daughter on this much longer but if they have no other option for us what can i do. Because of the long term plan of the Miralax my PCP and i have set up a schedual to test kaelyn for her liver and kidney function every 3 months and if it remains normal every 6 months. my hope is i can find something before the end of antoher year to give her that works they way we need it to....does anyone have any sugestions for meds, we know that milk of mag, mag citrate, lactalose docalax and diet does no good. AS well as we have just started to take her to a chiropractor who frequantly treats infants for constipation and colic.
