Guest guest
Hello , First, I would like to caution regular use of Smooth Move tea bags. You may already know this... the label reads:For the Overnight Relief of Occasional Constipation; the website is http://ca.traditionalmedicinals.com/nhp/product/95.This website outlines other precautions: and http://www.mahalo.com/smooth-move-tea. I applaud you in your search for natural solutions and I can see that you are dedicated to your family's health by exploring all options. It is my passion to seek healthy choices and to help others find the road to better health. I became passionate about this because of our long journey... our family suffered with various ailments in the past, all of which were prescribed medications, and continued to worsen. With the help of our pediatrician (yes, our knowledgeable pediatrician), my daughter was able to avoid ear drains for her ears and I was able to put chronic health issues into my past. From that point forward (which was 10 years ago), I decided to research healthy choices and to make changes in our lifestyle. It was last year when I was reading online about constipation to help one of my clients and I found this Miralax group... which helped me to caution my clients in their choices for constipation problems... and I'm so glad that they have found healthier options. I would like to share with you our pediatrician's recommendation to take Juice Plus+, a whole food supplement available in capsule and chewable (gummy) form. It is made from a variety of fruits and vegetables which are grown in nutrient-dense soil without pesticides, then juiced, and dried. Our family realized significant, measurable benefits from Juice Plus+, including not getting sick almost every year when most of the families around us would be suffering with the flu and colds. A noticeably simple realization was our "regularity". After five years of taking Juice Plus+ and assessing our health benefits, I decided to become a representative of the product, to learn more about nutrition, and to share this wonderful supplement with those I love and care about. I later learned that pediatricion Dr. Sears and his entire family take and recommend Juice Plus+ as well to provide the balanced nutrition that so many of us desperately need in our diet. He has battled cancer and tells his story on his well-known website http://www.askdrsears.com/html/4/t040500.asp I am happy to answer any questions that you may have. B. To: miralax From: elizajoy2000@...Date: Tue, 14 Dec 2010 12:34:02 -0700Subject: need advice and reply to vomiting Hello group, This is my first post, and it's a long one! I've been lurking on this list for a few months because my almost 18-month old son who has Down syndrome (and a host of related medical issues) has constipation troubles for which many other parents of kids with DS recommend Miralax and dietary changes to treat. But I am wary of Miralax and haven't yet figured out the right regimen for him. First, I wish to posit some thoughts about a separate recent post (Jack, I think) about a child who has started vomiting. (Poor guy!) My other son, at 3, who is a typical child of good health, had sudden ongoing vomiting after an illness that caused much vomiting. After months of tests, we finally determined that he was vomiting, in the middle of the night only, because his esophagus was raw with damage from the initial episode, and when he lied down, he was refluxing and re-aggravating himself. We put him on an 8-week dose of Prevacid and SLOWLY weaned him off (that part is critical because at first we just stopped the dosing and symptoms restarted). He is fine now. So... because your son has a variety of medical and gut problems associated with spina bifida, including reflux, perhaps he has esophagus damage that is causing the vomiting. The telltale sign would be vomiting after lying down. Just something to consider. As for my younger boy, he has fairly regular BMs but they are frequently painful, even though they are not usually dry or hard. Part of that stems from his low tone and low motility associated with Down syndrome, and we hope he'll get stronger as he grows and moves more so that he doesn't scream his head off (which also sometimes leads to vomiting) while pooping. Here's where I need help. My goal is to get a clear bowel regimen for him so he can have painless BMs and we can get off the cycle of over softening his stool with too much prunes (or Miralax, which we tried once because we were desperate, but which when coupled with high doses of prunes resulted in days of diarrhea, also painful), and then not softening it enough. I also want to help him so that he isn't straining so much, which I fear could lead to other problems. Is that a valid fear, btw? The Miralax episode happened around the time when we had to switch formulas (soy-based, which I'm not happy about either) because of a recall. Ugh. My son is now drinking mostly organic cow's milk and some formula, and I can't correlate any specific problems to a suspected allergy. He does have a rash around his mouth, but we think that's from the chamber that delivers his respiratory control meds. He also is a little more congested sounding in the head, but he's also teething and had a cold...(Correlating is always hard for a baby with so many other medical aspects at play.) He takes thickened liquids because he aspirates thin liquids and has respiratory issues so getting fluids into him isn't the easiest. We give him prune puree and at least four ounces of watered down prune juice (thickened) daily, which has mostly worked well since he started solid foods (i.e., purees. We're still working on feeding more solids because he has swallow and oral coordination issues.) He takes high-quality multi-strain probiotics, powdered vitamins (that's new), and ground flax seed in his cereal for added fiber. He is a little underweight, but slowly growing (20+ lbs!) since we've controlled some of his respiratory problems, removed his adenoids, and incorporated some high-calorie and other feeding strategies into his diet. He still nurses once a day. He's had surgery for duodenal artresia at two weeks old, but I don't suspect his problems stem from that; doctors say his intestines are fixed. A Children's Hospital pediatrician from the Special Care Clinic recently recommended we figure out the right balance of prune juice, colace (a laxative, I believe), senna (I don't actually know what that is or how one buys/doses it), and mineral oil. I don't even know where to begin with that. It seems that trying so many new things all at once can only lead to more confusion about what is and isn't working. If anyone can share anything about colace, senna, and mineral oil, I'm very interested. I've read about many food-based, more natural remedies, I'd like to try first. We do not have doctors who would support that. They are all medically oriented, so they tend to recommend drugs. I just really don't know where to begin. If anyone can give me advice, including pros and cons/cautions of each remedy and the amounts to dose, I'd really appreciate it. It would be great to have a concoction that works continuously, but I doubt that's possible. Any thoughts on that aspect? I've read about: Natural Calm for kids (magnesium)Epsom salt bathsCod Liver Oil or Fish Oil (what kind? so many omega 3, 6, 9 variations to choose from...)Aloe (what kind, juice? how much? I've read here it's not for long term use?)Chia (I've heard it's fabulous along with increased hydration but may be a problem for people who've had blood pressure issues, which our son had, but maybe it's OK now???)Smooth Move tea bagsL-Carnitine (what is that?)papaya juice or pureeFruit-ezeL-glutamineGlutathione (haven't read up on that at all)psyllium husks (any potential probs with this except for need for added water? How much to how much water?)Flax (what kinds, how much, any danger?)coconut oil and as mentioned above:colacesennamineral oil Thank you to anyone who takes time to answer so many questions. I am trying to get educated from many sources.Eliza p.s. I get the digest version of this list, so for me and others who do, it would help if when people reply, they delete the previous thread in the body of their message and only quote the sentence(s) that they are responding to.
