Hi Luanne, Thanks for the info. I'll talk to Ken's Dr. at our next visit about the spleen guard. His platlets are at 62,000 they are going to wait 1 month and do another count and see how much they are dropping in that time. They had dropped 14,000 in a little over 2 months. I don't know why they should or should'nt keep the spleen. Ken seems to think he would feel better without it. But I would like to keep all orginal parts as long as possible. The tests he took mri's, xrays etc. all showed his spleen was "huge ". He too has trouble eatting and feels uncomfortable after. So doesn't eat much. I have been pushing for him to eat smaller amounts just more often, but this is hard for him. He has to keep working to maintain his insurance. And is of course a junk food junkie. So I try to send home with him some good stuff. Thanks for your help. Barb

Re: I'm new to group.BarbHi...My son also has PSC and has had a times a very large spleen....He is 17 and rather small...although in the last yr he did finally hit 5'5"...128lbs...in the fall of 98 he was in the hosp because he couldn't eat and it was even getting difficult to hold down water...His spleen was so large that it was puching all his other organs around....giving him very little room for his stomach which was pushed way up and causing the lack of room for food etc....when they did tests they drew on his belly to show others where his spleen was....way down on left side almost to hip bone....and all the way over on the other side of belly button....pushing his liver also....He had to wear a spleen guard for months....to protect his ribs from rupturing his spleen.....this guard went all the way around his middle with a hard front.....In the beginning he had to wear it 24 hrs a day....then was able to sleep with out it.....after months he was in better shape and was able to stop wearing it.....so he still has his spleen....there was talk of taking it out but this what they wanted to try first.....Yes his playlets were very low and remain low.....What are Kens playlets....I know I am alittle late in answering you original post...I have a hard time keeping up....Hope this was some help....Luanne Ty's mom

Hello Aubrey,

Ken and I met with the surgeon today. She didn't think we should take out

his spleen at all, and wondered why his PCP would even suggest it. She

thinks he might benefit from TIPS. So we are off to see his GI Dr. on Wed.

My question for you - I have read TIPS is associated with the development of

encephalopathy and that stenosis of shunt occurs in 1/2 of patients. It's

not indicated with portal hypertension and relatively preserved Pro Time.

Ken's Pro Time is 14.0 What do you think ? One last question---- why don't

you send out bills for all of us free loaders?. You could be a very rich

man!!!

Of course than I would have to have you meet my unmarried daughter......

Thanks Barb
