Guest guest
Well, my son has been off of Miralax for 3 months. Thus far we have seen no improvement in any of our concern areas. 1. Weight gain. We're still holding steady. I was hoping my son would begin to show improvement in this area after 3 months if Miralax was involved. 2. Vomitting. This started about 6 months ago. It has been steadily getting worse. We've had a very recent increase in frequency that we are very concerned with. Since that increase in frequency is after two months of being off of Miralax, it's hard to draw a correlation to Miralax there. 3. Attitude and behavior. These were never a concern before, but have been on the down side lately. Probably a result of the vomitting issue we are trying to get our hands around. My wife and I are really looking forward to getting back on Miralax. We absolutley hate the Generlac (Lactulose) that he is on right now. We see some of the same things I have heard people complain about here, but with Generlac instead of Miralax. Maybe some people do well with one vs the other... I'm not sure how much longer I am going to continue on the experiment of not using Miralax. I can honestly say we haven't seen one benefit of being off off Miralax. Guest guest
Jack, I have to say.....after my daughter's clean out with Miralax, I have been hesitant to keep her on it. But she has been complaining about not feeling well for over 6 months, so we were guessing it was because she was backed up. We have been using a little less then 1/2 a dose 1x a day for about 3 weeks, and it has been keeping her very regular. Not only that, it is no longer VERY hard balls, and she has not complained in about 10 days that she does not feel well. We also used Miralax for a short period of time when my daughter was around 2, and we have never seen any adverse side effects. I'm not sure if I want to contine, I hate that she has to be on it, but I just wanted to add that we have never had a problem using the product. Guest guest
I am new here and not sure of your son's history; but there are two things that you may want to have your doctor look into. The first is celiac disease...which most think of only with diarrhea--but it can instead cause constipation and weight loss. Incidentally, celiac can also cause reversible lactose intolerance which can explain the vomiting. The second thing...kidney reflux. Vomiting can be a symptom of this. Good luck to you. > > Well, my son has been off of Miralax for 3 months. > > Thus far we have seen no improvement in any of our concern areas. > > 1. Weight gain. We're still holding steady. Guest guest
Jack, I think one of your main concerns that led you to taking your son off Miralax was his lack of weight gain. As I've mentioned before, this was also the trigger for us taking our DD off Miralax. It took her months, nearly 8 if I remember correctly, before she gained a pound (no way for us to measure the ounces). At 2.2 y/o, when we took her off Miralax, she weighed just 23-24lbs. Today, at 3.4 y/o, she weighs 28lbs. She still has extremely sparse hair growth, and slow height growth.I can't recall now how long your son had been on Miralax before you took him off, but my guess is that it takes as long, if not longer, as they have been on it for the side-effects to start wearing off.Good luck to you and your son whatever you decide to do.To: miralax Sent: Mon, January 24, 2011 6:55:10 AMSubject: Miralax free for 3 months Well, my son has been off of Miralax for 3 months. Guest guest
That's about the dose we were using and find effective for Miralax. Same results too: no more hard balls, pretty much normal stool. If it weren't for this forum, I probably wouldn't be worried about Miralax at all. This forum is the only place I have read anything negative about Miralax, and there has been enough misinformation here, that I am inclined to write this forum off entirely. I have found some pretty decent information here on diet and nutrition, and as such, continue to hang around. My son has Spina Bifida, Hydrocephalus, and related complications from the Spina Bifida. As such, western medicine isn't optional, it is a fact of life for him. Guest guest
I just have a general comment of my experience with my son and constipation--and not necessarily a reply to this subject. My son who is three and a half now was constipated for two years resulting from him holding in his urges day in and day out to where it became automatic to not poop--unless it forced its way out. This resulted in either major back up for 5 days or more, or poop oosing out of his butt 20-30 times a day. This basically went on for two years, and has been a major source of stress for him, and me. There were weeks where he was not himself, disturbed and out of energy, but also did not want to poop. I would be wiping little pieces of poop all day long, day and night. I felt there must be something awfully wrong. maybe he was loosing the muscle that pushes it out? I was very worried. But when I was prescribed miralax and saw loose poop come out of him (no matter what the dosage, the poop was always too loose and unpleasant for him), he seemed more helpless and disturbed that he had no control and that this watery poop was coming out of him. As I was using miralax under the supervision of a specialist, I had her advice on one side of my mind (to do it every day for months), and just this feeling that this is not the way to go in the other. Then I talked to a mother at a party who has a 7 year old daughter with similar problems, said that for her daughter, she saw it as an emotional problem, and that the thing that had helped her the most (after trying everything conventional and not--including acupuncture) was a homeopathy doctor--this doctor also worked with the daughter and talked with her. For her daughter, on a emotional level, it was a control issue, and it started when the parents got a divorce. Her mother's interpretation was that she could not hold on to her father that left, so she was holding on to the only thing she could control--Poop. And she said that this homeopath was the only thing that got her out of it. So emotional problems can surface this way as well---of course, its not the case with everyone--but the intestines, poop, is often very effected by emotions. even in adults.Around this time, I just decided to let go of it all together. Just to trust that he will go, and to leave him alone. the only thing I did differently was that I gave him epson salt baths and Magnesium cream (its easiest to be absorbed by the skin--http://www.amazon.com/Shealys-Biogenics-Magnesium-Lotion-Pint/dp/B000RGRWS0 Husks mixed with warm water and omega 3 fish oil (lemon flavored--got it at whole foods) and a lot of fruit first thing in the morning. And I just left him alone. On my emotional level, I tried to trust that he can do it himself, even though it was hard for me to feel this. I also asked his daycare to casually show him when other kids were pooping and to suggest to him the idea so he would get the subject from someone other than myself in a casual way. (he said 'no' for a week, and then started to at least try the second week)Within two weeks, he started pooping on his own at home. first it was every couple of days, and then every day. Now he is happy to poop and is proud when it comes out, not as a watery explosion, but a nicely shaped normal poop that he pushed out himself. Since he tends towards constipation even when he is not withholding, when he has trouble for more than a couple of days, I give him a glycerin Suppository. He hates it, but at least a real poop comes out and he is happy after its over because its not a miralax poo. So at least for my son, this is how things resolved and continue to. Now if he can poop in public, this will will be our next step. Just for your info, he has tended towards constipation since he was a baby. Has also gone through many different phases of having rock solid poop, baseball poop that has made him bleed, and as my sister calls it, St.Bernards poop. H-U-G-E. and 2 or 3 of them at once. He also did what i call the 'sausage factory' for a year. just cutting the poop with his cheeks every time it comes out and holding in the rest. many varieties... The doctor said his poop sack is all stretched out and that he needed to be on miralax for a few months before i saw results, but i stopped, followed my gut, and the above is how i got results in two weeks. If anyone can get anything out of this, that would make me happy, because I honestly thought it would never end. I was always talking about it, always pressuring him and getting really stressed, and deep down felt really negative about it. I think he was picking up on this which was making it much worse. So I learned a lot through this experience about how my thoughts influence my son. In this forum, I don't hear anyone talking about consulting a homeopath--I was ready to go, to be never did--but perhaps that is a solution for some as well? Sometimes there is a certain dynamic that is created with parents, and just like the people at my daycare shed a different light on my son about poop in a light way, i feel its good to get someone else to connect and to talk with our kids--someone that is not that worried about it. wishing the best, leynaTo: miralax From: jack@...Date: Mon, 24 Jan 2011 21:56:19 -0500Subject: RE: Miralax free for 3 months That's about the dose we were using and find effective for Miralax.
