Guest guest
Hi everyone, I have not been on the board in quite a while since my older son has been doing much better but we are now dealing with the same constipation with my 18 month old. They wanted him on Miralax and we did use it to do a cleanout but have taken him off. We are trying Milk of Magnesia right now but I am concerned about him being on that regularly for any period of time. What would you all recommend? Lactulose seems like a possible option? They have done all the tests and he is negative for celiac and hirschsprungs... Thanks for all of your help! MallorySubject: Re: what do you think of lactulose? To: miralax Date: Saturday, March 19, 2011, 1:10 PM Worked fairly well for us for a while. We use it in conjuction with low doses of mineral oil. Two problems we encountered (that may not be a problem for others)... more gas and it makes the poop more acidic. If your child is able to use the toilet I would just caution to be sure he wipes well. My son is not trained for bms and so the more acidic poop became more of an issue for us b/c he has sensitive skin and it literally burned his butt. But I guess like anything else, judge for yourself--our pediatrician gave lactulose to his own daughter and b/c she was toilet trained there were not problems with it (per him). It did work pretty well for us as a stool softener, so it was a shame we had to discontinue it.Kathy what do you think of lactulose? What do you guys think of lactulose as a method to soften poop? My son had his endoscopy and colonoscopy yesterday and things looked good but we will have to wait till the biopsies come back for hishbrungs and celiac. They say it doesnt look like celiac so that was cool. Honestly i think it was the vicious rash that caused the witholding and then there is no stopping that snowball. We tiols doc we didn't ant to use miralax and we finally talked to a doc who was willing to tell us another option. Lactulose is made from lactose and isnt absorbable into the body so it goes to colon to have the colon kick in some acid and that draws water to the colon and then you get water in stool. Seems wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy more natural than a manmade chemical. Anyone using this stuff?
Guest guest
my son has just started laclulose 2 days ago and so far not super powerful as miralax. wont put him on miralax so i uped his dose this morning to 1 tablespoon and a half and uped his dose of natural calm to 2 teaspoons instead of one. Seems like lactulose is kinda weak. I think its just like corn syrup. Hope it works for you and me. The battle rages on.Subject: Re: what do you think of lactulose? To: miralax Date: Saturday, March 19, 2011, 1:10 PM Worked fairly well for us for a while. Guest guest
Dairy can cause constipation. Gastroenterologists poo-poo that (no pun intended, ha ha) but cutting out dairy has made a big difference for my daughter. Two different gastoenterologists just wanted to put her on miralax instead of finding the cause of the problem, unfortunately.Subject: Re: what do you think of lactulose? To: miralax Date: Saturday, March 19, 2011, 1:10 PM Worked fairly well for us for a while. Guest guest
cant belive all the doctors ive talked to and not one has mentioned milk allergies or any allergies for that matter. Its like they have shares in miralax.Had a thought that milk constipates awhile ago so we took him off of it for 10 days or so and no difference. Maybe he had to be off of it longer? Subject: Re: what do you think of lactulose? To: miralax Date: Saturday, March 19, 2011, 1:10 PM Worked fairly well for us for a while. Guest guest
We used MOM & mineral oil for a while and the results were pretty good. We had used the children's strawberry flavor. It also seemed to cause less gas/discomfort than miralax, but of course not as powerful. The problem we had with it was that due to my son's sensitive skin, when we would do a cleanout, the more acidic BMs would cause him a butt burn. This was not an issue except for at cleanout. Guest guest
I remember my DD's pediatrician telling me to up her Miralax dose but keep her on whole milk. I decided to keep her on formula and keep the Miralax dose low until I took her off it altogether 5 months later! To: miralax Sent: Sun, March 20, 2011 8:50:50 PMSubject: RE: what does everyone think about MOM? cant belive all the doctors ive talked to and not one has mentioned milk allergies or any allergies for that matter. Its like they have shares in miralax.Had a thought that milk constipates awhile ago so we took him off of it for 10 days or so and no difference.
