Cure Autism Now: Thursday, December 7, 2006 return to top ^ Memantine Study to Target Motor Dysfunction in Autism Cure Autism Now kicks off recruitment for its first Clinical Trials Network study In an effort to explore the possible role of pharmacological treatment of motor deficits in individuals with autism, Cure Autism Now has recently awarded a pilot grant to Evdokia Anagnostou, M.D. from the Seaver and New York Autism Center of Excellence at Mount Sinai School of Medicine. The Mount Sinai team will lead a collaboration of treatment sites in conducting research into the effectiveness of memantine (marketed as Namenda), a compound which modulates the glutamate neurotransmitter system in the brain. Clinically, early data from open label treatment with memantine suggests that it may be helpful in targeting symptoms of motor planning, language, and cognitive function challenges in autism. A randomized multi-center clinical trial of memantine will now be undertaken by the Clinical Trials Network created by Cure Autism Now. The Mount Sinai School of Medicine is the first site to actively enroll subjects. Other clinical trial sites will begin recruiting in the near future. The recruitment periods will vary; for up-to-date information on recruitment for the sites, as well as other studies seeking participants, please check the Clinical Trials/Research Project listing service. Read more about this study in the Science News section of our website. > I met a mom who told me that DAN! doctors are now prescribing a > prescription med for children with apraxia.
