Fantasy: a barber shop/salon where I could go and be a

mannequin while Kim cut my hair. Not having to talk and

appear " friendly " would be so lovely.

For a few years (long ago) I felt compelled to let my

sister-in-law (a licensed/trained beautician) cut my

hair. That was awful. Because the " pay-back " for not

acting " friendly " in the right way was so much worse.

I don't have any contact with for-pay hair-cutters

between hair cuts. But my sister-in-law was around a

lot at that point, and she could take out her resentments

on my brother, also. <shudder> I'm glad that phase is

over with anyway.

I agree!! In my case I would also enjoy not being asked if I was going to a

party that night, or what I was doing to celebrate Christmas, or if I had a

boyfriend/husband, and then being assumed to be weird and have the

hairdresser shut up at that point, which feels worse than if they didn't

talk in the first place, at least for me..

I used to date a hair stylist (meaning we had a one-night stand followed the

next week by a nervous breakdown on her part and me actually skipping

Politically Incorrect because I knew I could get the transcript online).

Anyway, she had a nervous breakdown about being so gosh-darn poor, so I

usually tip them $2. Seems to make up for my lack of chit-chat. I used to

be more talkative, but when I was roommates with someone who was extremely

obnoxious in his perseverations, I started claming up more. As Tito says,

" better to be mute than to be disordered. "

Kim,

With my case, it was similar in hairdressing/cosmetology. Not to say I

didn't learn anything though. I was lke you, good at theory, somewhat

nervous with practicals. I didn't mind mannequin practice either. My

hair then was perfect for being used as a model. I went through it

longer than the standard mos it took for the averge NTs in class. What

killed me (besides the nervousness, shakiness & perseverations Aspie &

epilepsy related) was the fact you had to be a salesperson (which I

didn't have the personality for) besides your standard job. We had to

sell the hair products, etc. I had worked P/T at Sears taking catalog

orders (which I loved) as well as scheduling service repair calls. (I

didn't like these calls as much.) While there, we had to sell their

laundry detergent. Needless to say, each place had their contests for

top pitchpeople. I was barely lucky if I got a sale. Yet on the other

hand you got some people who were highly offended-especially those who'd

call in for service on an appliance.
