Guest guest
I've never used or recommended the product, but you could easily get 40,000 IU Vit A per day!!! And, young school teachers using it? Is there a warning on the package to not take if pregnant or at risk of becoming pregnant? Just 20,000 IU's of Vit A per day is enough to cause birth defects!! Ouch. I wonder how often a user HAS had a child with birth defects and didn't realize the possible cause? Jan Patenaude More info below. _http://www.fetal-exposure.org/VITA.html_ (http://www.fetal-exposure.org/VITA.html) One report stated urinary tract malformations were seen in an infant of a women taking 25,000 IU during the first three months of pregnancy and 50,000 IU during the fourth through ninth months of gestation (Bernhardt et al., 1974). An earlier report also described an infant born with gross urinary tract defects in which the mother had ingested 40,000 IU of vitamin A per day from the sixth through the tenth weeks of pregnancy (Pilotti et al., 1965). Central nervous system defects were present after ingestion of 150,000 IU per day during pregnancy (Stange et al., 1978). Between 1984-1986 there were ten case reports describing possible teratogenic effects of vitamin A on a pregnancy. These case reports were mainly reported by doctors to the FDA or by a state birth defect registry. Doses in these pregnancies ranged from 25,000 to 100,000 units/day before and throughout pregnancy. Those women taking 25,000 to 33,000 units/day had offspring with microcephaly, ear malformations, and transposition of great vessels. These three defects were not seen in combination in any of the infants (, 1986). Women taking doses of 40,000 units or more per day before and during pregnancy had infants with combinations of malformations. One infant had tiny ear canals, facial dysmorphy and high palate. Cleft lip and/or palate were consistently seen in all infants exposed to 40,000 IU/day or more (, 1986). In a message dated 3/5/2008 2:19:44 P.M. Here is short piece I wrote for a forum I am on: WHAT'S IN IT: A mixture of 17 vitamins, minerals and herbs including megadoses of vitamins A and C. EVIDENCE: NONE A former California second grade teacher " invented it " . According to the company, a study it funded several years ago showed that Airborne relieved cold symptoms faster than a placebo. But Airborne won't make the study public - wonder why. According to an ABC-TV investigation the company that carried out the study, GNG Pharmaceuticals, is actually a " two man operation started up just to do the Airborne study " . There was no science, no scientists and no doctors reported ABC. As for taking Airborne to repel germs in an airplane, restaurant or other crowded environment (as Airborne claims) is nonsense according to researchers. CAUTION: Each Airborne tablet contains 5000 IU retinol (active form of Vitamin A - different than beta-carotene)Vitamin A - different than b level) is the largest amount anyone should take of a vitamin - is 10,000 IU of retinol. Larger amounts can over time cause liver damage, birth defects and increased risk of hip fracture. Especially dangerous for growing children. If you follow their directions you would get 10,000 IU every 6 hours or 40,000 IU in 24 hours. Some individuals will take this for days or for a whole season PLUS they will still take their own vitamins which many include MORE Vitamin A. BOTTOM LINE: Save your money and your health!
