Hi all,

I'm new to the group and I've been reading posts for the past few days. Basically, I've been constipated for 2 months and I can't seem to clear things out. It all started when I got sick with what I thought was a Crohn's flare (abdominal pain, fatigue, nausea, loss of appetite, etc.). My GI did a CT scan and found that I was "full of poop." So, he told me to take Miralax twice a day for 6 weeks. I did that and still wasn't feeling "better." I was able to eat and I was going to the bathroom frequently (so my constipation symptoms had improved) but in other ways I was feeling worse (sore throat, congestion, dry eyes, headache, etc.). I thought I might be getting dehydrated from the Miralax or maybe it was causing me to experience side effects from another med I'm on (Methotrexate for the Crohn's). Anyway, my GI ordered an x-ray and it showed I was still "severely constipated." I had been going to the bathroom multiple times a day so I did not think that was possible. I was shocked that I could still be constipated but x-rays don't lie and my GI nurse said they see it all the time. They say that the severe constipation is because of the Crohn's even though they do not see any signs of inflammation or other Crohn's indicators (once you get the diagnosis it seems that everything gets attributed to "Crohn's" without further investigation as to why). Anyway, they suggested the following super cleanse: 3 nightly enemas followed by 4 Dulcolax and a colonoscopy prep cleanse followed by 2 more weeks of daily double doses of Miralax and then another prep cleanse.

I only got through the first prep cleanse. It made me so sick that I didn't want to take Miralax ever again (which led me to some research and eventually this group). When I stopped taking the Miralax, I started to feel a bit better (sore throat went away, etc.) but then my constipation symptoms got worse and worse until I was doubled over in pain and didn't want to eat. I became desparate and started taking the Miralax again (although now I'm taking it once a day). I'm still feeling super sick, althought it seems to ebb and flow (mornings after a BM are better than evenings; days that I'm able to rest are better than when I am busier). Most times I'm afraid to eat, I have constant abdominal pain, and I'm really tired. I never knew constipation could be such a nightmare! It seriously has stopped my life these past couple months. Anway, I've been reading so much info lately and I'm a bit overwhelmed and not sure what to try next. I am willing to do anything to feel better (and have tried A LOT of things already) but I have not been getting much results. Also, I'd really like to be able to stop taking the Miralax. My GI said after I'm cleaned out, I'd have to take Miralax for the rest of my life. I really don't want to have to do that because I just don't think it's healthy or addressing the core problem.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I'm currently taking a probiotic (Florajen 3) but would be willing to try the other ones recommended on this list (VSL3 & Kirkman, I think). If I take the Kirkman, does it have to be chewable or do you think the other varieties would be as effective? Also, has anyone tried any of the cleanses from Renew Life or read the book Gut Solutions? I'd like to take a more natural approach, but don't feel confident enough doing it on my own... I don't want to make things worse.

Thanks!!!

:)

,

I would like to suggest something we did for our daughter that worked. We saw every doctor under the sun and after just refusing to take this awful drug again did they finally get us the help we deserved.

They did a battery of tests and found it not to be anything physically wrong with her. We then found a dietician and an allergist to help test her to find out the roots of our problem. What we found was we were not to be Gluten Free, but we needed to cut out her milk intake. With simple solutions we are not dealing with the issues we once did. She is a happy child once again.

My suggestion to you since you are an adult is to read your lables. Try Lactose free milk, and there are cheeses you can purchase that are very tasty made from goats milk and almond milk which are really good. It got my 9 year olds approval.

This is not a quick fix, however it is simply a lifestyle change that you can make happen if you try simple things.

Also Priobotic chews which can be purchased at GNC (best ones I found) yogart does not seem to bother her either not sure why but it really seems to help with keeping her regular.

Our daughter is much happier and has been really mature about the changes she has had to go through. It frustrates her at times and I understand why. She would like to be a regular kid and have ice cream and pizza. And sometimes as a mom I just say ok, but then when I let her she is up all night either throwing up and then we have a day or two with constipation. I do not like this drug our doctor refused to beleive me when I told him our issues. Much like yours where she had headaches, stomach aches and very bad tempertantrums and at age 6 she wanted to kill herself. I look back on it now and realize that the issue was Miralax.

A friend of mine recently gave me some information to a web site-

www.feingold.org it a helpful site that looks into the preservatives in our foods and what foods can counteract our personal issues.

Please just give it a lifestyle change. If your hungry pick up some fruit, drink some apple juice ( the only thing I give my daughter to drink with her lunch). Eat more fiber find it and enjoy it. I put my whole family on 's diet and she is much better for it and so are we.

Good luck,

Amy

Isn't it amazing what a simple diet change can achieve vs. chemicalizing our lives even further. When I told my pediatrician that I thought milk was the cause of my DD's constipation, she told me to keep giving her the milk and to increase the Miralax dose!! Insane!! Especially when alternatives to cow's milk are SO readily available!! This simple order cost my child nearly 9 precious months of growth!!From: Amy Hollis

, Shaklee has the best all natural products on the market. Very little if any synthethic. This herblax is all natural I believe, works well.

http://www.shaklee.com/products.php?sku=20144

http://kirkmanlabs.com/

The kirkman comes in regular pill form. Kirkman makes any form you wish.

Just so you know......dulcolax has Polyethyle glycol (PEG) the same ingredient as Miralax in them.

Sorry to hear your situation, hope we can help.

Lillu,

Lucky you only lost 9 months we lost more than that and there are more children

who will be on this roller coaster even longer. I am going to keep saying it

over and over. Diet and lifestyle change are the biggest key. If I can do it

anyone can! I believe milk is one of the biggest causes of constipation.

There ate so many alternatives.

Good luck,

Amy
