Guest guest
I hear all these stories about people with high PSAs & mine was only 7 but my cancer is very advanced (5+4=9). It seems that my PSA should be a lot higher. My doc said that if my cancer responds to treatment I might have 6 years. If it doesn't then he said a few months. Other than pain once in a while I feel fine. If I am going to die in a few months it seems like I should be slowing down & feeling sick or something. BTW, I am taking Cassodex (50 mg). The internet says I should take 150 & start the shots at the same time. I am confused by what my doctor is doing. Any opinions as to how good Cassodex is? --- Manley Albuquerque, New Mexico Jim Manley's Photoshop Elements Page http://www.geocities.com/jim_p_manley/index.html Jim Manley's Photo Retouching Page http://web.mac.com/jamespmanley > I was diagnosed in Feb 2005, PSA 220, Gleasons 8/7 > Went on Lupron/Casodex and my scores decreased to below 1 > After 6 months they began increasing again, dropped Casodex, they went > down for 4 months. Guest guest
There are many varieties of prostate cancer. They are not all the same and that is part of the problem in making decisions as to treatment. There is one variety that is very aggressive – that is to say it has a very high Gleason Score but the cells generate very little PSA. It appears that this is the profile of your tumour. I don’t think any doctor can, or should, make any predictions as to how long any person will or won’t live. Perhaps what you have been told is what studies show for a man with a similar diagnosis to yours – that the expected survival range is from six months to six years. The FDA has approved a dosage of 50 mg of Casodex because some studies demonstrated that higher doses might cause a small number of problems. Many doctors use multiple doses to get to a daily dose of 150 gm. There is a degree of controversy about the drug still but many anecdotal reports of success. All the best, Terry Herbert in Melbourne, Australia Diagnosed ‘96: Age 54: Stage T2b: PSA 7.2: Gleason 3+3=6: No treatment. Guest guest
there are many possibilities for cancers like yours. If one thing doesn't work you just need to try another. No reason to give up. If you only have a few months I would think that you should be making a list of all the things you want to do before you die and then check them off as you get them done. I just bought a kayak so I could use it before I got too old and sore to take it to the river and paddle. It is great and I actually feel better after I go out. Tired but happy. What have you been putting off doing? Now is the time. Do it?
