Guest guest
Your second post makes me wonder about gluten. Have you tried being completely and 100% gluten free for at least 3 months? Other than that, I don't know what to tell you. It's very hard to make a 4 year old eat/drink something when they don't want to. Can you hide flax seed in pancakes, muffins, cookies? Flax may help. Or hide a spoonful of coconut oil in a fruit smoothie or ice cream or something of the sort? Or maybe hide Nature Calm in orange juice? Another option could be Juice Plus gummies. They taste and look like gummie bears. My son LOVED them and they worked well. www.juiceplus.com There's also someone on the list that is a Juice Plus rep, she could help, too. Not a fun place to be. Good luck!I forgot to add that she has always been breastfed and otherwise healthy without any major issues such as eczema, chronic respiratory/ear issues, etc. Thanks Z>> Hi everyone, I can't remember if I've posted an intro or anything before but just in case I'll do it again and see if there are any quick suggestions as I usually don't have much time to go back and read posts or search for ideas.> > Our daughter is four and has been having withholding issues since around two. I believe it all began with a huge painful poop but I wasn't really aware at that time about what could happen. She finished in her cloth diapers around 18 months and we were very relaxed about everything so I'm not sure why it even happened (ie food, stress, etc). I didn't really become aware of what could happen until around a year ago and at that time we were trying warm epsom salt baths, magnesium on and off since I had the kid's one and she hated it, and even one shot with suppostories (which she obviously remembered because I was going to try last night and she asked for anything but that ). > > It's been a long, painful, and upsetting road for all of us (and I know we're not alone) but I really want to get a handle on this now. > > My husband is out of state working and we've had no car so things have been overwhelming at times and I'm sure the stress has not helped her at all. She is now on day 9 with no BM and that's only happened a couple of times before. Sometimes I wonder if it's not just better to get her to drink more even if it's not healthy. So this BM that she hasn't passed is probably very dry. Guest guest
hanks Tracie, yes she likes gummies so I was trying to read about the Juice Plus gummies to see what it is that makes them work but couldn't find anything yet. Can you or anyone tell me offhand what makes it work? About the gluten - I have a friend who's son has Aspergers and we've always talked about going gluten and even trying casein free but I haven't been able to figure out how to do it on a financially tight budget and at the moment no car to get to places that give me a decent selection of foods. I will say that we were trying to avoid a lot of bread a couple of weeks ago which is when I pushed the fruit and it helped a bit. I think as we get through this I will talk to my friend more about how we could try out a GF diet. Guest guest
will most likely comment and help you with the gummies. In the meantime, try the website and read what you can about them. As for going GF on a tight budget, here's what I suggest: first, cut out bread and pasta. You'd generally be safe...Then, print the lists below and carry them with you when you go to the grocery store. Many products have gluten hiding in them (gravy, taco seasoning, seasonings, boxed rice, some candy, breading on chicken nuggets/fish sticks, etc). Never go out to eat. If you do go out to eat, stay away from anything fried (it's usually fried with products with gluten). Keep safe with baked potatoes, salad or plain chicken breast. In order to see if gluten is the problem, you have to keep away from it COMPLETELY. Even the tiniest amount can reinjure the gut and cause a 6-mo set-back. Guest guest
Are you able to get even the Pedia-Lax quick dissolve strips - notes that they use Senna as the laxative? It may help and/or do you think she'd drink some warm prune juice? Hope she gets it out and though Miralax may not be your first choice if it's a matter of getting it out at this time and being in pain with it then perhaps just a wee dose to get her comfortable. I imagine she's really uncomfortable. Good luck! hanks Tracie, yes she likes gummies so I was trying to read about the Juice Plus gummies to see what it is that makes them work but couldn't find anything yet. Guest guest
We were just in a similar spot a couple of days ago. I ended up using two heaping teaspoons of Natural Calm. I used the unflavored and dissolved it in ½ grape juice ½ water. I let it sit for quite a while before giving it to her because it is sour if you give it too quickly (I use it myself). It worked pretty quickly. The initial movement was painful for her, poor kid was so uncomfortable, but enormous relief afterwards. We are keeping her on a maintenance dose of natural calm (which is really difficult to adjust imho to find the right ‘softness’) and so far so good. It might be a great initial clean out for her and then you could find another maintenance solution. We are gfcfsf over here and initially the TACA site was really helpful. They have some great ideas for a budget and a transition (though we went cold turkey). It’s much less expensive to make things from scratch than to buy prepared and at the moment there are also some decent mixes that do not cost a fortune. Wishing you all the best! Guest guest
Hi , Have you considered a glycerin enema for a clean-out? Feet's makes a good one - the one with the short nozzle worked for us like a charm. also, we give my now 3.4 DD vitamin C gummies daily. we cut out cow's milk - it was her trigger - and kept her on formula. she can tolerate everything else, it seems - pizza, whole wheat breads and pastas, but milk even in pancakes will make her skip days. these days she's goes 2x a day w/o any pain and always a good consistency, although they tend to be rather large BMs.during the worst of it, we never let her go beyond 3 days w/o a BM. we would always use Fleet's glycerin suppository and it always worked within minutes. The worst part was administering it as she didn't exactly lay passively through the process.Good luck to you!!To: miralax Sent: Fri, February 18, 2011 9:43:51 AMSubject: Re: Need help now with BM! hanks Tracie, yes she likes gummies so I was trying to read about the Juice Plus gummies to see what it is that makes them work but couldn't find anything yet. Guest guest
so I did actually buy the babylax liquid enema when I was out today but had no luck getting it anywhere near her tonight We " administered " it to her My Little Ponies but when it came time for her she wrapped herself up in the blanket and wouldn't let me. I'm actually not sure I even needed it tonight anyway since I did give her the gycerin suppository this morning. Tonight she had a bit of leakage twice but managed to hold through again... I just want to make sure I clarify also that it's not that she gets automatically constipated but that she manages to hold through every time she feels the urge to go and will walk around holding her butt. Hoping for tomorrow since we got to the grocery and stocked up on lots of watermelon, some more fruit, grape juice, and the rest of the jars of pears and prunes. She drank a lot of coconut water tonight and hopefully with the car soon we'll be able to get out to get fresh coconuts (we're in Miami ). Thanks for all the suggestions and support today - it's so emotionally draining for both of us and I sometimes feel like I'm going to kill the strong bond and trust of my normally loving and very trusting daughter. Guest guest
Also get some mango. We were told it was very good for constipation. A cancer clinic uses it offset constipation in it's patients. so I did actually buy the babylax liquid enema when I was out today but had no luck getting it anywhere near her tonight We "administered" it to her My Little Ponies but when it came time for her she wrapped herself up in the blanket and wouldn't let me. Guest guest
my son was doing the same for a year though I think he was constipated despite going every day it was always hard and small and at some point he started holding then in turn when he did let it go it was painful. he would walk tiptoe and clench. though now he is trained on potty and poops on the potty he will still attempt to hide and hold but he easily allows me to guide to the bathroom to release & is happy when done. i am one of few who gives miralax but i like to be on the board to read ideas of when i'm ready to get him off, as one day i will. he is extremely picky in terms of food and though he eats some fruits & veg's it's very little. am just afraid to retreat from the miralax and personality much better when he has a BM than when he was holding and not going. he gets 1 tspn every day and compared to some others I've read this is almost nothing. it's a tough road and i expect when my son goes to kindergarten he may regress so not ready to go off miralax but we talk about eating fruits & veg's to go potty and be healthy so i know i will wean him slowly in this year to see if he is ready just don't want him to have a painful bm to cause any further regression. to each his own here and i love to read what others use because it will be important for me when the weaning time comes. thanks for all who share here. -meredith Subject: Re: Need help now with BM!To: miralax Date: Saturday, February 19, 2011, 12:48 AM so I did actually buy the babylax liquid enema when I was out today but had no luck getting it anywhere near her tonight We "administered" it to her My Little Ponies but when it came time for her she wrapped herself up in the blanket and wouldn't let me. I'm actually not sure I even needed it tonight anyway since I did give her the gycerin suppository this morning. Tonight she had a bit of leakage twice but managed to hold through again...I just want to make sure I clarify also that it's not that she gets automatically constipated but that she manages to hold through every time she feels the urge to go and will walk around holding her butt. Guest guest
This breaks my heart to hear what wrote as we are only listening to our medical professionals. "it's so emotionally draining for both of us and I sometimes feel like I'm going to kill the strong bond and trust of my normally loving and very trusting daughter." , kirkman probiotic chewables were a god sent for us and no more enema's or suppositories EVER again. Kirkman's probiotics produced a bm that was strain free. I can't say enough about them. They are expensive but nothing's too expensive for a child with constipation, it's horrible. They taste sweet and easy for children to take. Senario.....................when women have a yeast infection and you go to the doctor they give you a anti-fungal cream and all that good stuff! Little does everyone know that a probiotic will clear it up, building the good bacteria vs. killing it To: miralax Sent: Fri, February 18, 2011 11:48:14 PMSubject: Re: Need help now with BM! so I did actually buy the babylax liquid enema when I was out today but had no luck getting it anywhere near her tonight We "administered" it to her My Little Ponies but when it came time for her she wrapped herself up in the blanket and wouldn't let me. Guest guest
SUCCESS yesterday poor thing but it's done Thanks everyone for all your support and suggestions. I will be implementing a lot of the ideas that were given and also picked up some 's aloe vera yesterday which she's already getting. We did a lot of fruit, and some purees, and this morning papaya, strawberry juice, a grape juice/magnesium popsicle and she 's been peeing normally till this afternoon when she started putting her hand on her butt again but the great thing is it's only the day after rather than four days so I have high hopes she may not be able to wait it out this time. I think I'll be spending a lot of time here reading to see what combination we can come up with that works for us. Thanks again and hope everyone has a great week! Guest guest
, I just want to tell you this from the experience and the don'ts I had to learn the hard way on................be careful with aloe vera juice, start drinking it yourself and make sure they don't know it's to help them go potty. The more conconctions we come up with to help them go, the more in tune they become with holding and refusing to hear about another one of our remedies!!! (doing just the opposite) This may be one reason why my dd would take the probiotic, it was the best tasting and easiest route for her. There was noooo way she was drinking that stuff. Guest guest
Someone mentioned mango - yes, that's one of those fruits that's good for the bowels (until you get acclimatised to it?!) Avocado can be good - if you can persuade your DD to eat it (try with a vinaigrette dressing). Obviously your struggle to give enemas and suppositories sounds familiar to me - since they're the only things that always work on mine I've had to learn to force them on her (not nice) > > > > > > > > Hi everyone, I can't remember if I've posted an intro or anything > > > before but just in case I'll do it again and see if there are any > > > quick suggestions as I usually don't have much time to go back and > > > read posts or search for ideas. > > > > > > > > Our daughter is four and has been having withholding issues since > > > around two. Guest guest
Mango has natural digestive enzymes so it should certainly help, but if your DD is willfully withholding, then the only way to get her to go would be to make the stool so loose that she will be unable to hold it back for any length of time.I'm sorry, I can't recall now if you mentioned that there was something in her life that triggered this withholding pattern, such as a divorce and again, sorry if you already mentioned this, but talk therapy may be in order if the above is the case. To: miralax Sent: Sat, February 19, 2011 7:11:07 AMSubject: Re: Re: Need help now with BM!
