Guest guest
> > -- I'm going to put some comments in your text. My comments will have **** marks preceding them. Read thru till you see my name at the end. > > > > > > > scweb786, a 34g a meal user of Miralax > **** 34 grams a meal? It's been so long since my son was on it, but isn't that nearly twice the adult daily dose (isn't the adult daily dose 17 grams?). When you are taking this much, does it " work " for you, i.e. are you able to have a bowel movement daily/near daily? Are you having any burning sensations as the bowel movement is being passed? (this is what my son used to complain about on and after miralax, a burning hot sensation). > > > > > > I'm sorry but the attached document is completely meaningless to me, I do not know how to decipher it to make sense of how Miralax or propylene glycol is affecting people. > > ***** Well we don't exactly know. We think that it may be a couple of things going on. Possibly the polyethylene glycol (PEG) is being slightly degraded into a substance that is closer to ethylene glycol. Not enough to kill someone like antifreeze would do, but jus a small amount, enough to raise the Oxalate levels in the body. This could be why some of us noticed crystals in the urine of our children when they were on it, and may explain the burning sensation as it was being passed. But not all the kids complained of this. What some of the literature I have found states that while doctors will tell you that none of the PEG is absorbed into the bloodstream/body, studies have found that PEG 3350 can indeed cross the intestinal barrier, albeit in very small amounts. What we wonder is, if in our children who reacted badly, were they suffering from the 'normal' small amount passing through, or were larger amounts passing through their intestinal wall? Or, was all of the negative reaction taking place within the gut itself, i.e. the degradation of the PEG into EG, ethylene glycol, in small amounts. We don't know because we're just parents, not researchers. > > I would like to read a clear, detailed list of the problems Miralax, etc. cause and read some personal examples of the history and outcome of these people who had the problem. > **** Well, I don't know of one that exists. When I moderate the Iwanttojoin comments, I am surprised at the number of children whose parents report that they are seeing dramatic personality changes (for the worse) in their kids, the onset of tics, urinary problems, inability to pass the bowel movements, hand tremors, that type of thing. It's far too often to be coincidental. But as far as adults, I think it would be so individualized because of other medical issues that could be going on. > > > My wife just does not take it. > **** What does she say it does to her? Why won't she take it? > > However, I take a lot of Miralax. After decades on psychopharmaceuticals, my intestines just stopped working. I looked 9 months pregnant all the time. They ran all the GI test to see if it was cancer or tumors or worms or anything else. It was just that my peristaltis no longer worked. Miralax is the only way I can go. Taking so much of it, I would like to know the problems that people have reported with it's use. Are there problems that everyone has, even if they do not notice it. Or, is it just some people have problems? > > *** I think it is just some people that have the problems I mentioned above ( the personality change, the tics, etc.) so, yes, I think it only affects some people, in my opinion. BUT on the other hand, is it really safe to use long term, for years and years on end? Hmmm. No one really knows that do they? It is a chemical substance. > > Do you still have to take the psychopharmaceuticals? > > I don't know if you would ever consider it, but if you found a good Colon Therapist they might be able to help. They do colonics but also work with you on supplements and massage to help get some peristalsis going, however, as you mentioned, the psychopharmaceuticals can certainly counteract that. I once read an interesting study about rats and they were giving them something. They found that there was a definite window of the right amount of serotonin necessary to faciliate a bowel movement regularly. Too much serotonin caused extreme constipation, as did too little serotonin! Only when the serotonin was " just right " did the rat resume normal bowel habits. This could also explain why some women see dramatic changes in their bowel habits that follow their monthly cycle, as their chemical balance changes through the month. > > W > > > > The normal dosage of Miralax is 17g per day or per meal depending upon the individuals situation, but I do not go the the bathroom with 17g, but at 34g per meal and sometimes more, I have regular bowel movements everyday. This is on the advice of a terrific gastroenterologist who did tons of tests to rule out everything else. By the way, I have no symptoms of any kind in any part of my body from taking 34g per meal or more. You mentioned that the kids have all these symptoms. Is there some correlation between a young undeveloped intestines and someone who is much older, 61? My wife is extremely sensitive to all meds. She inherited it from her mother, so it makes sense that she would be sensitive to Miralax also. Her pain is not in her intestines though. However, she is not the talkative type and just says it makes her nerves hurt, which I take from living with her since 1976 that it her limbs where the nerves are hurting, similar to the way some of the psychopharmaceuticals make her extremely anxious. Yes, I have to be on psychopharmaceuticals and have been since about 1978, otherwise I would be in a mental hospital. It may be an inherited condition from my maternal grandmother or something else. The severity of the pain and anguish before going on psychopharmaceuticals was beyond description and I would not wish it on even murders or thugs. Luckily, I had a terrific psychiatrist for a short time, until he moved away, who recognized that depression was not my main problem, but fear and anxiety. Once on Buspar and Klonopin for about 2 years a kind of wall prevented the majority of the fear and anxiety to not attack me each day. Despite this I am housebound due to the fear and anxiety that the medicine could not hide. If I get to anxious or fearful, the right side of my chest goes into violent myoclonic jerking -- the whole right side jolts violently to the left and keeps doing this uncontrollably. To complete my drug list I am also on Lithium, because if I do not take it, in a week, a month or 6 months, I break out in uncontrollable crying. I take Effexor XR for the depression. It is not a really powerful drug for depression but it is all I can take, so many of the meds make my diabetes go right through the sky. I am now, almost 40 years after starting on meds, stuck with this bunch of meds having tried almost all the meds there are. And I am stuck with the limitations of being pretty much housebound, except for the doctor and the store. I have had tons of colonics with no benefit and taken extremely good probiotics with no benefit. Thank you W for giving me some insight into the group and I hope I have answered your questions. Even though I do not presently have any problems and have been on this dosage of Miralax for 2-3 yrs, I am very interested in finding out what is going on with the children and Miralax and other people.
