(Address: Sandhya Pruthi, MD, Division of General Internal Medicine, Mayo Clinic, 200 First St SW, Rochester, MN 55905, USA. E-mail: pruthi.sandhya@... ). Summary: In a study involving 30 women experiencing at least 14 hot flashes a week for at least one month and not receiving estrogen therapy, consumption of 40 g/d crushed flaxseeds was found to significantly reduce the frequency of hot flashes. For one week (baseline week), while being given no flaxseed therapy, subjects documented the characteristics of their hot flashes. Over the next 6 weeks, subjects were given 40 g/d crushed flaxseeds. Results showed a 57% mean decrease in hot flash scores and a 50% mean decrease in daily hot flash frequency (from 7.3/d to 3.6/d). Improvements were also reported in joint and muscle pain, chills, sweating, and quality of life. In terms of side effects, 50% of subjects reported mild or moderate abdominal distention, 29% reported mild diarrhea, one subject reported flatulence, and six subjects did not complete the 6 weeks due to toxicities, weight gain, or taste intolerance. The authors of the study conclude, " This study suggests that dietary therapy decreases hot flash activity in women not taking estrogen therapy. " Additional research involving larger numbers of subjects is warranted. -- ne Holden, MS, RD < fivestar@... > " Ask the Parkinson Dietitian " http://www.parkinson.org/ " Eat well, stay well with Parkinson's disease " " Parkinson's disease: Guidelines for Medical Nutrition Therapy " http://www.nutritionucanlivewith.com/
