I have not been able to access the messages via the group email format. I

used to just go to the website listed but now I get a website with egroups

but ptmanager is not there. Any hints on how to get the messages again?

Anne,

Try clicking on the part of the egroups site called " my space "

- it should make sense from there.

Sorry for the confusion. Egroups keeps revising.

I changed your status on the list so that you will be getting the full

text summaries once a day. this will make for a longer email but you will

still only get one a day. Let me know if this works for you.

We too are trying to reduces restraints (Side rails are counted as

restraints) We purchase a NOA riser bed it lowers to 7 " but also raises

to 23 " . It has been a great help preventing fall for the resident that

had previously fallen numerous times. We have ordered another and intend

to slowly replace our beds with them. Be aware however that some State

surveyors (ours in Hawaii) consider this bed a restraint as the resident

cannot rise independently. I guess you can't please everyone but it has

sure helped reduce the risk of injury to our resident. By the way these

surveyors also counted recliner chairs as restraints and made us code

self release velcro belts as restraints even though the residents could

demonstrate they could manage to undo them themselves.

I'm looking for comparative data on how much time it takes to manage how

many people in various settings. Please has anyone got any information on

how much time it takes to manage 10, 15, 20, 25, 30 FTE's, what mix of I/P

and O/P, does the department have a fulltime or part-time director as well?

I would be interested in seeing this information posted. As some one who has

seen their department grow from 10 (including me), 5 FTE, 5

parttime/supplemental to 28 (includes me) 20 FTE, 8 parttime /supplemental

FTE. That growth includes adding ST and OT to a dept that was only PT, all in 5

years. ( Acute care setting with outpatient), I know that demands on my time

regarding supervision have more than doubled as well as othe rdemands.

Currently, I have two senior PTs but these are not considered S/A in our system.

S/A is supervisory administrative.

I am looking for information to help me support adding a Supervisory position.

Unofficially, the Senior PTs are delegated S/A tasks, which I then review and

sign off on.

In the 9 years I've been in my current position, I've overseen growth of the

department from 3 PTs (including myself)/2 aides/1 secretary to 8 PTs/1 PTA/2

OTs/1 SPs/2 aides/1 secretary now spanning both a hospital and an outpatient

location moved offsite last year.

In the early days, I carried a 50-75% caseload myself for the overflow of my one

inpatient and one outpatient therapist and handled administrative matters in the

remaining time. Later on (especially after we moved the outpatient clinic

off-site from the hospital itself), I allowed the outpatient area to schedule

more to therapist aviailability and shifted my own clinical " fill-in " to the

inpatient side of the practice where continuity of care was easier to assure.

In the past couple of months, taking on some multi-hospital computer system

development projects has removed me almost completely from hands-on clinical

practice, leaving only about 50% of my time available to the department for the

next 4-8 months. That time is now dedicated solely to top administrative

matters and guidance of the site leads. There is a lead PT both at the

hospital and at the outpatient clinic, each of them primarily a clinician, but

responsible for daily operational decisions as welll (deferring whatever they

feel appropriate to me).

I do tend to provide a productivity buffer on those 2 therapists in my own mind,

but their overall clinical volume is not significantly different from the staff

PTs, so I've never made a big deal of it. Perhaps it's because I chose my most

productive performers to assume the lead roles that creates this balance, but

it's worked for us over the past couple of years.
