Guest guest
Hi ,I think maybe I had another email from you that I was saving to reply to, but maybe this was it.... Anyway, I am a big believer in giving up grains, allergy or no allergy. But as you know, it can be very hard. I am considering that, but am going to stick to daily Oxypowder for a while (and now am adding back in 's Aloe--had forgotten that was one of the things we used to do back when things were better) first and see what happens. I was just curious about mood because my daughter's mood is so sensitive to what's going on in her digestive tract. I used to say that when she was backed up she was much more irritable. Now that we are giving lots of supplemental magnesium, though, she's cheerful most of the time, backed up or not. And I find that interesting...in fact, as her constipation has, from one point of view, worsened (it seems like less is coming out) and from another point of view, improved (though there's a lot in there, it's soft instead of hard), her mood and general level of cooperativeness and manageability and the degree to which she's a joy to be around has all improved dramatically. She now acts all the time the way she used to be only for the two or three days right after getting a massive amount of stool out. I should note that I've also been getting a good multivitamin and a liquid mineral supplement into her regularly for the past several months--and I think those somehow help with mood as well. Of course, maybe there's no connection at all and it's a coincidence...we've had a lot of life changes in the last year and I'm certainly happier even though my diet is frankly worse. Anyway, I'm going back to lurkdom, at least for a while, as I have several deadlines bearing down on me... Thanks for your always insightful reply! Bonnie Hi Bonnie - Yes - magnesium (the right form!) did seem to make him a little more calm/less irritable, but was not the full answer for his constipation issues either. He was fairly impervious to senna and other stimulant laxatives also - though with enough of these things in combination, he would finally have a BM, though on rare occasions we also used a glycerin suppository. It wasn't until we gave up gluten (and most grains), in addition to casein/milk, soy, and egg (plus corn for a while), that the constipation issue really eased up. We were grain-free for about a week in the very beginning of going GF and wow - what a difference. I did add back rice quickly, and a few months later added in corn. He does well on the strict diet (Gluten-free; casein/milk-free; egg-free; soy-free; only rice or corn as grains (no millet, quinoa, buckwheat, sorghum, etc)) with about 300 mg (sometimes 600mg) magnesium supplement per day. But he also still has lingering psychological/withholding aspects and as soon as we get too lax on the diet or eat too much rice and/or corn (e.g., too many grains) his BMs start to change and he can all too easily fall back into withholding. Overall - I feel we're past the constipation/withholding, but any slip up in the diet sets us back quickly. The diet has been our top sign of improvement - I just need to stay on top of it. I do hope that as I continue to address other issues (e.g., mercury and candida), that his sensitivity to small slip ups in the diet will also ease up. hth?.... best, > > > > > > > > > > My daughter's IgG test showed she was sensitive to about 29 different > > > > items. > > > > > I removed most of them but it never resolved her constipation > > problem. > > > > She's > > > > > not free of all of them anymore, but I think the top 12 are > > completely > > > > > eliminated. > > > > > > > > > > I have still not solved the constipation problem. > > > > > > > > > > The naturopath i saw said if you have a whole bunch of sensitivities > > that > > > > is > > > > > a sure sign of a leaky gut. Guest guest
Yes, magnesium is so good(a natural calming mineral) that our sons seizure's are under control due to the help with magnesium. s isnt that great with the stool movements/softening, they take out the main ingredients for that. But it is good for other things. Fruit of the earth is good and not to bitter. You can mix it in anything! Guest guest
kristin, i don't always have better bms since I went off wheat, rye, milk and i don't eat soy but there is a little in my vitamins but I really don't feel any better and i do take MOM and fiber. I really don't think you can eliminate everything and what happens when he grows up and leaves the house. you can't controll him then. its a never ending battle and its also hereditary and I honestly believe that as my whole family has the same bm problems. a couple of times i had wheat toast and actually had a better bm so what is the answer. I don't think anyone knows and I do think that children with autism seem to have these and psycological problems. I really don't know . as far as corn it gives a lot of people either diarrhea or constipation and so does other foods. its puzzling and when an answer is found it will be great. I know your a biologists but its hard for you to find a solution. even scientists can't find an answer. there are hundreds of people out on the internet trying to sell their solutions and who do you trust. I have tried so many and spent so much money and they seem to work for a short time and then back to the old and i am very strict. just ask my husband. God Bless You. marg i will call when i get a chance. you seem so busy. Guest guest
Hi Marg,I sympathize. It's very frustrating to try to figure out the link between diet and constipation, even if you keep a food diary and bm diary and compare the two regularly, as I have periodically done -- I finally stopped because I couldn't see any pattern whatsoever in what was happening with my daughter's digestion. It's insanely frustrating. I've also done elimination diets for periods of a month to six weeks (maybe not long enough, maybe not strict enough, but shouldn't it have changed something, even if only slightly?) and not seen a change. That's frustrating also because I personally really do believe that gluten is part of the problem, but it doesn't seem, at least for us, to be so clear cut as just being able to cut it out and get better. I do find that for us, sprouted breads might be better -- I'm not certain but I do feel better eating sprouted grains (like Ezekiel bread) than I do when I eat regular bread. Ezekiel bread is made with various strains of wheat and certainly contains gluten but the sprouting process changes it somewhat. Anyway, I sympathize with what you are saying about dietary changes and how hard it is to see a connection. On the other hand, though, I just want to point out one thing, and I think it's important for us all to remember this. Constipation can mean that food goes into the digestive tract and then doesn't emerge again for days or weeks. When you have some foods that are digested more quickly than others, and some foods that are more liquidy (like soup) and may make their way through more quickly than others, and then you have still other foods that take days or weeks (and never the same amount of time but always a varying amount), then you can see why it's so impossible to draw a connection between a food and its possible effect on the bowels. I mean, suppose you eat a slice of wheat toast today and then have a bowel movement today -- does today's bowel movement have anything to do with that wheat toast? I seriously doubt it. I think today's bowel movement had to do with whatever you ate several days or weeks ago (depending on how speedy your particular digestion is). Because that wheat toast from today is probably just sitting on top of a bunch of other stool that has been stuck in there for goodness knows how long. And what comes out today in a bm -- well, who knows when you ate that food. That's why a severely limited diet like SCD could have some real value, because it reduces the number of variables that you are looking at. If you only ever eat about five different foods (or whatever the number is that you can start with on SCD), it's much easier to say, oh, it seems like these foods do or don't make my constipation (or my child's constipation) worse. Because if you only eat those five foods for a month, seems like they must definitely have something to do with what comes out and when. But if you eat a normal healthy varied diet with lots of different foods, you will probably never be able to make a connection between what foods make the constipation worse and what foods don't. There are just too many variables and no real way of tracking the effect of any one variable on your intestines. When it comes to grains, I really am very suspicious of all of them, because when I spent several months as a raw vegan, and never ate any grains that weren't soaked or sprouted (and rarely even had those), I had no problems with my digestion of any kind (and I was once a very constipated child, not as badly constipated as my own daughter is now, but badly enough off that my mom was badly frustrated with the situation). The value of an elimination diet is that you do isolate a particular variable and look at the effect of taking it out -- but the limitation is that there may be multiple factors involved and then taking out just one of those factors may not give you a true picture of that food's potential effect on the gut. Am I making any sense? I am badly tired as I write this--I was planning to just lurk on the list again and then got sucked back in. I do think this issue is something we should all think about though.... BonnieP.S. I guess one exception to what I am saying would be foods that stimulate peristalsis, contractions in the gut -- like the senna in ExLax, which works for some people, for example. Then you might see a clear connection between ingesting a substance and having a bowel movement...ditto with magnesium and other laxative substances. I wouldn't put Miralax on that list, incidentally, at least not for us! Miralax never worked for my daughter until it had been in there for a good ten days or so...(she's not on it any more and hasn't been for years, but she was on it for about a year and a half as a toddler/preschooler). kristin, i don't always have better bms since I went off wheat, rye, milk and i don't eat soy but there is a little in my vitamins but I really don't feel any better and i do take MOM and fiber.
