I had gastric bypass surgery six years ago. This was before I started taking pain meds. Let me know if you need any advise or information about the surgery. Hi Georgia: Different opiates affect people differently. For example, I have this same problem if I take hydrocodone (Vicodin) within several hours of going to bed - it keeps me wide awake for hours. But I don't have this problem with Oxycontin. You're not unusual. If at all possible, maybe try moving your opiate schedule so you take that last pill of the day a few hours earlier. I don't know if it would help, since this is a time- released drug, but it is worth trying. Also, if this doesn't ease up after a couple of months on the Oxycontin, then ask your doctor to switch you to a different opiate. It's possible that another drug wouldn't affect you this way. Good luck. Cheryl in AZ
Guest guest
MODERATOR'S NOTE: Lyndi just asked everyone to PLEASE type in paragraphs so that ALL of our members, including the ones that have vision problems, are able to read your messages. We will be rejecting posts that do not follow the rules of our list. Thanks for helping us help you. I had to take a combo of meds to sleep (still do) while on Oxy. I take Ambien (allowed up to 2 per night but never take more than 1), and temazapam, 45 mg (can take 60 but don't). I'm on MS Contin now, and it seems like the Ambien gets me to sleep while the temazapam keeps me asleep. Any of the " pams " should do the same thing, diazapam (valium) Xanax (whatever pam that it) Clonazapam, etc. Works for me right now, but it took a while to get it right. Ambien CR worked just like Ambien, and Lunesta didn't do anything. Rozerem (a new one?) did nothing for me either, even after weaning me off Ambien and taking no sleep meds for a month. In the past had tried several other older sleep meds that just left me hung over in the morning. So...back on Ambien an temazapam and it greatly helps. Guest guest
RE:: Why would you have to wait three months before surgery? The surgeon says that in order for the pain meds to work after the surgery I have to come off my pain meds. He said something about the pain reseptors (sp?) being over loaded if I stay on the pain meds. I have been off them 3 months, 17 days. and the surgeon told me that all I had left was to go to the psyh. and nutrionist (sp?) then he would file with insurance. I did that and waited for 3 months then called back and ask if insurance had ok the surgery... come to find out the fart had not filed the insurance he told me I had to loose 20+ lbs before hand. So I'm trying to go to hickory NC to have it done. they don't have a weight limit, but my PCP will not send me there. She says that she " does not know this doctor so NO " Well I have a appt. with a new PCP and the first thing I'm going to find out is will he send me to dr. Cook. If not, I'm on to a new doctor. or have to wait till I see my female doctor Dr. A.. I did not know this but, a womens gynocologist can referrer you to any doctor. The insurance companys consider them the same as a PCP. So one way or the other I want to go to hickory for my surgery. Carol

Guest guest
> > Does anyone else taking Oxycontin have trouble falling/staying asleep > even with Ambien? I too had problems falling asleep with Percocet. There are two ways I found that worked with me although each had its downfalls. My doctor prescribed a muscle relaxer Tizzinadine helped me immensely in getting some sleep. The problem with that paticular medication mixed with the Percocet for me was that I sometimes experienced hallucinations and loss of control with my legs while standing. I finally placed them by the bed and took them only after I knew I would be staying in bed except for bathroom trips. I found these paticularly helpful when taking steroids and experiencing the no sleep and high emotion roller coaster ride sterooids can cause. The other way I was able to sleep while on Percocet was crazy but it worked. I had to take Alprazolam, Benadryl, Flexeril, Ampitryptaline (spelling),, and Percocet. I'm not saying this gave me restful sleep, but it certainly beat not sleeping at all. I can no longer afford all the meds so I don't get much sleep, but maybe this will help. Still a newbie~Charlotte
Guest guest
Rick I went to see a new pcp and he was great. He is going to send me to a doctor in Charlotte that does the surgery and does not have weight limit. Plus he gave me klonopin for my restless legs and something for my incontinence. This is the first day I have not had to shower and change clothes a couple of times... Woo Hoo!! All I have to do now is wait on the blood work to get back and if all looks ok, I got my new surgeon. Guest guest
I just take the occasional 10mg Oxycontin at night (since I'm nursing, and the little one sleeps through the night). Ambien knocks me out right quick, but without fail, I get up between 2 and 4 am, wide awake, but then get real tired at 5-6am. Unfortunately, narcotics keep some people up and give some of us a touch of ADD. Which is fine for me for a bit, since I get the banking and cleaning done, but then I can't sleep! Maybe try some melatonin? Cheers, Sara >Does anyone else taking Oxycontin have trouble falling/staying asleep >even with Ambien?
Guest guest
Hi Carol That is Great! I have never heard of that. Some places do have weight concerens but you would have to be well extreamly obese as in the 600 lb area. Klonopin is alos good for most any nerve condtion. It IS a Benzodaizepine but is much more potent than valuim. It is used for Restless leg syndrome and It also has mild ant depreasnt activities as does Xanax. It is not generally known or has not been made well known . Good luck with your surgerey Rick
Guest guest
Thanks for the input on this issue. I moved up the Oxycontin to around 6:00 instead of 9:00 and this seems to be helping some. I'm going to talk to my doctor next month and see what can be done to help me get some quality sleep. Thanks again, Georgia
Guest guest
Hello, I take Ambien also. I have to make sure to take my pain meds and muscle relaxer by 7:00 at the latest and my Ambien and Clonazapam at 9:15 in order to fall asleep. Hubby and I lay on couch until about 10:15, then I stagger off to the bedroom. If I take the pain meds any later--the Ambien doesn't seem to work very well. Hope this helps.
