Guest guest
From what I gather, Kelli, there may be a few variations. But there seems to be a common one, which is the one that I have..........it is like a pulsating/pressure feeling in the back of my Neck and base of my Skull. Kathy M. on this List is one who experiences a different type of Chiari Headache...........I'll let her explain hers when she feels up to it. I hope this helps. Guest guest
Hi I have to sort of disagree with Brande....everyone I've talked to that has Chiari pains describes them the same way, it's the intensity, length of time experiencing it, and other symptoms that come along with it that is different (in my experience.) Anyway, it's an intense pain in the back of my head (think it's called the nape) and also the top of my neck. It pulsates and throbs and feels like my head is going to blow off my body (no exaggeration.) It sometimes spreads to other areas of my head. The biggest part is that you feel like you can't move. Light doesn't bother me, nor does noise, although I do get sick to my stomach with them. Mine are brought on by positional changes (very common), straining (again, common), and also by doing too much. I hope this helps. If you go to the WACMA site, they do a great job of explaining them. Just do a google search for Arnold Chiari and their site should come up. Are you experiencing any of these? Guest guest
I thought you had previously described your type of Headache as kind of like a Spinal Headache. I may be mistaken. For me, I wouldn't consider them intense or throbbing..........pulsating(but not to the point of throbbing)/pressure..........for me. But we all experience/feel/and probably describe things different then the next person would. But I would have to say in all truth.........I don't experience them to the degree you do. Guest guest
I have to agree with Kathy. My head just feels like it's going to blow off. This was a good question I have woke up the last two mornings with one and I was going to come ask a few questions my self. Like how is every one who gets these treating them? The only thing I can do is lay flat. My pain med does nothing for these things.Maybe I need something different for them. What are the rest of you taking for them? My other symptoms are instantly sick to my stomach.Tingling between my shoulder blades is another one. My arms also feel like some one is trying to pull them off at the shoulder. If I sleep wrong I am waking up with my arm numb from my shoulder to my elbow not just asleep I mean totally numb.Any way any help would be greatly appreciated. I don't know if I am going to wait till November on this . If the symptoms don't start letting up instead of getting worse I'm calling the NSG a whole lot sooner. Guest guest
Kathy, If that worked that would be great for some but not for me. They gave me a diuretic once when I had a renal scan on my kidneys. By the time I was done I wanted to shoot the guy. For some reason my kidneys can't take them. It makes them work over time and they go right into spasms. Hurt like heck thought I was going to have to leave the test and go get a pain killer from the ER. LOL I'd say in your case push what does it hurt to try it.The every ten minute thing is basically how I have been dealing with it.I have been sneezing like crazy lately allergies or something and I think that is what maybe is irritating it. Maybe? Anyway I got up this morning took two benedryl and two tylenol and laid back down when I got up an hour later it was the best I have felt in 4 days. I also haven't sneezed any more today though. Mine started a year before my most recent surgery and they were fine up until a month ago and bamm they started again along with the other worsening symptoms from the Chiari.I talked to the PA at the NSG office and she told me that right after that surgery everything is just numb and things were starting to come back to life. She said I was pushing my self to hard and to take at least three laying down flat breaks a day for about a half hour. This does help when I have time to do it. What bothers me most is the things I love to do irritate it the most like sewing, reading, and doing puzzles I also can't run the vacumn what's up with that? I also can't sit for more than 20 minutes to a time and haven't been able to sit in my favorite chair since surgery it's reclining on the couch or nothing.I am teaching my self new ways of doing these things though.I can now read laying flat with the book above me and I sit at the sewing machine for ten minutes at a time and then get up and move around. If this is going to keep up I hope to find a relief other than more surgery. Thanks for the support. Guest guest
MRI's are your best bet when it comes to diagnosing Chiari.......but a CT Scan can techincally do it. If you have steel Rods in your Back, like I think you do if I remember right, you can still have an MRI of your Brain and Cervical Spine to check for this. Me Nebraska, USA mymocha@... > If you can't have an MRI for the Chiari will it show on a CT?

My sons headaches always started from his neck first then run up to the back of his head, at this point he could no longer move talk or have someone talk to him.Decompression surgey helped 9 months post op his headaches returned only up front and back of neck along with vomiting. The only thing that helps is pain meds and lying in a dark quiet room. Surgery help for awhile not sure if it is scar tissue build up or what that has caused them to come back and DR are not sure neither.
