Guest guest
JeanieWe wanted to give the Kirkman's Pro Bio Gold a try and bought the 60 count capsule. However, we have held back on it after seeing the email from couple of members from this group that their child had repeated strep infection while on Kirkmans. I am little hesitant to give it if it causes strep infection. The bottle is still lying in our refrigerator. what has been your experience with Kirkaman's probiotioc?ThanksRam.To: miralax From: dreamjeanie@...Date: Mon, 31 May 2010 18:29:58 -0700Subject: Re: chewable probiotics? Venus, That's a sure sign something in it didn't agree with her. I'm not 100% certain about this, but I believe that this is a man made strain. I thought I read this somewhere but can't find it at the moment. Also, It contains dairy, whey, casein, microcrystalline cellulose. Not sure if your child has a dairy or casein allergy, but this may be an indication. http://www.culturelle.com/files/culturelle/pdf/Culturelle_supplement_facts_EDH30.pdf Here's what I mean............. For years scientists had studied health benefits of a "good" bacteria called lactobacillus found in foods like yogurt, milk and certain cheeses. Of the strains they were able to isolate and test, they found that most could not consistently survive the strong acids of the stomach and intestinal bile. Enter Dr. Sherwood L. Gorbach and Barry R. Goldin. These two doctors embraced the challenge and set out to discover the ultimate probiotic power - a strain strong enough, sticky enough, fertile enough to survive the stomach acids and colonize in the intestines successfully. What they found was Lactobacillus GG. A probiotic unlike any other.Culturelle vs. Other Probiotics Most people I've spoke to say Lactobacillus Rhamous is the one to take for constipation. We had wonderful results with kirkman chewable. I wouldn't do a one size fits all b/c of her reaction. I'd go with a natural probiotic from a Chiro or Kirkman, the one's that need to be refrigerated. They are live bacteria and it makes me wonder when they start doing funky things with them that can stay on shelves. Guest guest
no, they are a white pill that resembles a tylenol tablet. It's made with xylitol which is sweet and they kind of chew up like a tums. When I went to purchase culturelle, the health food store strongly cautioned against it for a child. They said that it is the strongest they carry, with all the bacterias listed at a dose of 10billion. The brand that my husband and I use (Jarro) is only at 5 billion, and the one we settled on for our 2 yr old is at 3billion, with strains specific to a child’s GI tract, whereas culturelle is specific to an adults GI tract. I encourage you to not give up on probiotics, there are different strains and doses, I think you’ll find one that works and gives pleasing results J
Guest guest
Ram, when we first started out with it she did get some strep infections but so did my other dd and it was hard to tell if it was just that time of year all the kids get it in school. Or if the other dd gave it to her? Or if it were caused by the probiotic? As sometimes it was only her that had it? I was hesitant if it was coming form the probiotic or not? I continued with it b/c I wasn't sure if it was a coincidence? (She tends to try to say, "I can't take them, they make me sick" about anything that could help her go including mango!!! LOL!) although, I really believe that these children are nauseaous as my dd's been nauseaous since her first dose of Miralax and it has never went away and this is several times a day for 10 years now. I believe their bodies are too acidic and this is why they refuse any citrus, get lots of canker sores, etc. I can say that I've given it to her many time and she didn't get sick. Then another Mom said the same thing. That her child kept getting reoccuring strep and it made me wonder?????? Over time though, she didn't get it anymore and it's the only one she'll take. I am reordering them again this week as this hasn't happened in about a year. I'm not sure if they are related or if her body was reacting to the strep strain that's in them? It may have been that they are reacting to them this way b/c their immune systems are compremised. It may be good to add that strain so thier body builds up immunity. Over time she didn't get it anymore? I'm not sure but would give them again as it didn't happen anyomore over time. And I've taken them myself and it doesn't happen. It's hard to say what will happen if you give the Miralax kids anything, as they were an experiement. It never happened to me though.............I take them with her so she's not scared and to give reassurance. here's another analogy..........years ago if you had strep, the docs used to give antibiotics right away, they recently changed the protocol to waiting 24 hours> They did this because they found out that if you wait, the body builds immunity to it and the chances of reoccurance lessen. Giving antibiotics immediately gives the body no time to build immunity. If they did cause this in the beginning, I believe she may have built immunity to the strain which is a good thing. When I was little, I got strep like 10 times that year, it wasn't until my sister told me about waiting before you take an antibiotic that i never got it again. Fever's work the same way, they fight infection. We hinder that when giving tylenol immediately, etc. With that said, I'd have no problem giving them to my children and I take them myself.
