I'm at a loss and just don't know what to do. My DD is currently taking: Miralax, Ditropan and Terazosin for issues with constipation and bladder. She was dx'd with kidney reflux when 18 months old and at that time it was seen on the xray that she was severely constipated. She was started on Kondremul for about a year or so as well as some low dose antibiotics for the reflux. The kidney reflux has cleared, but now that she's 5 1/2 she has had many pee accidents a day, urine retention after she pees - hence the ditropan and Terazosin. She got wonderfully better for about 2 months, but docs don't want her on both meds and when we started to slow one of them down - she got worse. She's had an MRI to rule out thethered spine and she's have some more testing on the bladder in a few weeks. My concern (in addition to all the bladder stuff) is that the Gastroenterologist has had her on Miralax for many many months and said that she can stay on it for a lot

longer. However, at the last appointment in October she said that she didn't need to see her anymore as she wasn't going to "chase the pictures" meaning the xrays. the constipation is making the bladder stuff worse - but what is the miralax making worse? I'm just not sure what to thinking anymore. In all of my "googling" on the subject - I came across a posting where someone mentioned this site. Any insights anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.

Hi,You pretty much just described my daughter completely. She is 3. I know with my daughter the miralax didn't work and caused many behavior issues and yes it will make the bladder stuff worse. My daughter has started to have more accidents as well. It may be from the pressure of the constipation. My dd was so backed up it took two weeks to get her cleaned out. Her stomach looks totally different. She had been really extended. I haven't found anything that works for the constipation yet but we are trying milk of mag right now and high fiber diets. I am also going to look into aloe vera juice, many people use that on here. I can't do the epsom salt baths with her because it drys her skin out and her excema is so bad. Lokking back on everything now my husband and I do think miralax made things

worse. You can feel free to email me offline if you want and I can go in more detail about my experience.FaithiraTo: miralax Sent: Sat, February 13, 2010 8:22:57 PMSubject: new here....

Hi, Im so happy to here her reflux resolved! My son had kidney reflux but his didnt resolve and required kidney surgery, but is doing good for about 8yrs now.He was on a low dose antibiotic for about 2yrs also and this Im sure greatly affected the intestinal tract also. Antibiotics kills any good needed bacteria in the gut, floods the body with fungus/yeast(antibiotics are fungal by product) this starts the spiral affect with constipation also. I can tell you I was so nervous when they put my son on miralax and him having kidney issues! That is the one obvious warning they put on the miralx, not to use with kidney issues, but his gastro did it anyways. The urine....when my son was put on it the urine was crazy, it was so obvious what the miralax was doing. His output was in overdrive with urine. He would soak everything, this started immediatly with the

miralax. I at the time was thinking o my gosh what about his kidneys? This couldnt be good! He would also completely stop with urine and that would freak me out and then the excessive, etc etc. Also constipation/backup well for sure affect the bladder. The more backup the more accidents/output of urine. The intestines puts pressure on the bladder. There are others in this group that well be able to give you more info on the urine affects and PEG! I highly recommend getting her off especially with the past kidney issue! Also work on reversing the antibiotic affects. Thank you Jennie for the information. When you say " reversing the affects of

the antibiotics " ...are you referring to using probiotics? or something else?

With stopping the Miralax, I'm thinking cold turkey wouldn't be a good idea?

anyone have any advice on that?

Thanks,

Tobie

Cold turkey is what I did for my dd, but you must began alternative treatment the same day. Calcium Magnesium Citrate supplements, like Bluebonnet Liquid Cal Mag , plum juice or Kid Calm.

Please read the files for numerous alternatives.

We, too, did cold turkey. We had Natural Calm, probiotics, fish oil and PlumSmart on hand to start immediately. We over-dosed on it all to get results, then backed off. Tracie,We eliminated all gluten and casein for two months and there was no change, the docs thought I was crazy but I had to give it a try so when that didn't work I tried a high fiber diet, I also try to cut out some dyes and artificial stuff.ThanksFaithTo: miralax Sent:

Tobie,I stopped the miralax cold turkey because I finally realized it was making things worse and it wasn;t helping her constipation. My daughter was on it for 2 years and got up to 2 full adult doses and she was still getting backed up. Now that I hear you and Jennie talk about it, my daughter's urine output has been crazy amounts. I just always thought it was because of her kidneys. I constantly kept thinking she has UTI's and when I would have her urine checked nothing. She has now gotten to the point where she holds her urine for extremely long periods of time and I have to make her go to the potty. We have a repeat VCGU scan next month to see if it has corrected itself or if she has to have surgery. Going off of it cold turkey did not bother my daughter, I actually saw a difference in

her behavior very quickly. I would just try to find something else that may help her so she doesn't get to backed up. So far I haven't been able to find anything that helps my dd but we are still trying. Thanks FaithTo: miralax Sent: Sun, February 14, 2010 1:15:38 PMSubject: Re: new here....

one other thing I will add my dd was not diagnosed with SID until she had been on miralax for over a year. My husband and I never realized it at the time but she didn't start a lot of the falling and walking into things and sensory overload freaking out until after the miralax. We always thought the balance issues as well as her speech delay was because of her ears. She has had tubes 3x and adenoids removed. Looking back now it may have been a combination of both. To: miralax Sent: Sun, February 14, 2010 7:25:26 AMSubject: Re: new here....

My concern (in addition to all the bladder stuff) is that the Gastroenterologist has had her on Miralax for many many months and said that she can stay on it> for a lot longer. However, at the last appointment in October she said that she didn't need to see her anymore as she wasn't going to "chase the pictures" meaning the xrays. the constipation is making the bladder stuff worse - but what is the miralax making worse? I'm just not sure what to thinking anymore. In all of my "googling" on the subject - I came across a posting where

someone mentioned this site. Any insights anyone could provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for reading.>

Oh, well, good job trying! It's tough to be GF/CF especially with little ones. At least you know now and you can cross that off your checklist. Tracie,We eliminated all gluten and casein for two months and there was no change, the docs thought I was crazy but I had to give it a try so when that didn't work I tried a high fiber diet, I also try to cut out some dyes and artificial stuff.ThanksFaithFrom: Tracie Happel <ctaj10centurylink (DOT) net>To: miralax Sent: Sun, February 14, 2010 6:52:22 AMSubject: Re: new here.... Hi Faith -Have you looked into eliminating gluten from your dd's diet? It hides in a lot of places. Constipation, excema can be symptoms of an intolerance. Simply (I say that lightly as it's tricky and you have to be careful what is eaten) eliminate for 2 weeks and see if makes any difference. TracieHi,You pretty much just described my daughter completely. Lokking back on everything now my husband and I do think miralax made things worse. You can feel free to email me offline if you want and I can go in more detail about my experience.FaithFrom: tjstrickl2 <tjstricklcomcast (DOT) net>iraTo: miralax@yahoogroups .comSent: Sat, February 13, 2010 8:22:57 PMSubject: new here....
