Why would anyone go against the manufacuter's advise, not to give to children.........way to go best mom

Thanks Jack for the opposing views! I read the stories of parents letting their children stay in pain and constipated and I feel sorry for the kids. If Miralax works, give it to the poor kid. It is ok and good to find an alternative cure, but do not let your children suffer from impactions and encopresis because you refuse to give Miralax. Not to jump into the fray, but one has to remember that doctors are not infallible demigods. They are human, just like the rest of us, and they are prone to making mistakes, just like the rest of us, the only difference being that their mistakes could end up being catastrophic for some poor family.I have an example in my own family where my brother was misdiagnosed with appendicitis and it turned out to be an issue with the shunt drawing fluids from his brain (he has hydrocephalus). His surgeon, convinced it was appendicitis, didn't wait for the blood work, which would have shown otherwise, before he rushed my brother into surgery. My brother ended up in hospital for over a month, suffering from complications caused by the misdiagnosis. He nearly lost his

life. We finally moved him to different hospital (we are fortunate to live near the nations capital) and another doctor. Within a week, he was fully recovered and left the hospital.A more pertinent example: my baby daughter, at 3 months, was diagnosed with fungal infection in the diaper area. After a 5 second glance, the pediatrician prescribed anti-fungal cream and hydrocortizone (sp?). My mother's instinct screamed, No. I was completely opposed to the idea of so many chemicals on one so young. Besides, I believed that it was an allergic reaction to the bleach commonly used in many diapers. I believed this because much of the rash was also on her hips where there is rarely any moisture at all. Before medicating, I switched diapers to one with no bleach. The problem went away within days.Example 2, my daughter again, at 8 months, now diagnosed with eczema and prescribed

desonide. Same ped. I applied the desonide and within minutes, she started screaming. I believe it was burning her skin. When I washed it off, she stopped crying. Another ped, same practice, recommended that we bathe her every day, using oily soaps (we used Welleda) and to lotion her up VERY well after wards. We followed this recommendation and the eczema went away within a week never to return again. So, why would anyone go against their doctor's advice? Because, sometimes, they are dead wrong! To: miralax Sent: Mon, January 4, 2010 9:39:41 AMSubject: Re: Jack

Many parents dont see a change on miralax or it is sporadic, infact it adds more pain in many. Many of the suffering stories you are referring to are the children on miralax, that is why they come to the group. Some dont see symptoms but some have horrid symptoms. My son became severly bloated(lots of pain from PEG), that was more miserable for him than being backed up. Infact I used to think the severe bloating/pain was the stools and was so surprised to see the difference once he was off peg(his gastro admitted to us that miralax causes bloating/gas in many/that is painful/suffering). You can be backed up and no bloating. I understand your feelings on not letting children suffer as most in this group wouldnt want, but if PEG causes damage then in the long run the child well suffer worse. You have got to understand that about the parents doing everything to

get there children off PEG with alternatives, they dont want them to suffer more. I didnt just make my son go cold turkey(many are able to tho with no problems) I weened him with adding the natural so to avoid the backups. I belong to HD groups and miralax is a commen cause of encopresis. Many have to resort to enemas to avoid this while on miralax. My son is on another med that is dangerous and I have no choice(no alternatives at this point) and it is tearing me up that he is on it. We are not crazy, no meds/harm our children/that is insane(medications are neccessary many times). We arent here to make children suffer, we are here to avoid suffering. If there are alternatives we should as responsible parents do what we can. Jennie<><From: bestmom99cj

Doctors are supposed to follow manufactuters gudelines for safety. Doctors dont have the time like some here who are working overtime and spend days, weeks, years researching. Doctors dont know all the facts on meds(some do, some dont care, many care, some feel the risk out weigh the condition, each person is different and doctors are not trained to figure out the differences with each patient, that would be impossible). Although majority of docs mean well and I thank GOD for them, but they are not super human. How is sacrificing, helping, telling the facts not playing fair? She simply stated a fact and Im 100% sure this is not a game to Jeanie! You can sit here and say "Way to go Jack" a pusher but yet Jeanie, dedicated to what this group is about...dangers of miralax. When she says it you warn her????? Jennie<><Subject: Re: JackTo: miralax Date: Monday, January 4, 2010, 6:39 AM

The problem went away within days.Example 2, my daughter again, at 8 months, now diagnosed with eczema and prescribed desonide. Same ped. I applied the desonide and within minutes, she started screaming. I believe it was burning her skin. When I washed it off, she

stopped crying.

If you don't mind me asking what was the new product you tried that really worked for your son.To: miralax Sent: Wed, January 6, 2010 9:59:51 AMSubject: Re: Jack

I normally don't post, but I feel like I should this time. I am still trying to figure out how to do it. Hope it comes through correctly.

My son was on laxative for 6 years since 8 months old, and he had sampled all the laxatives on the market over the years. For the last three years he was on laxative, we used Miralax. He is now 7.5, and FREE of all laxative and medication, because I finally found the right nutritional supplements that worked for him.

I never liked any medication, I don't even like taking Aspirin myself, so you can imagine what it was like when I had to put my only baby on laxative, and was told for the rest of his life. I used all kinds of food first, hired a nanny just cooking for my son. I bought the best food possible, and took him to some of the best doctors and nutritionists in the country, but it was not work. Each time I poured the laxative into his water and watched him drinking it, I would cry. I felt like I was poisoning him, yet I had no other choice, but it did make me more determined to continue my search for something healthier and better. So for the last six years, I researched nutritionals extensively and tried many products, and some had help to reduce the laxative, but it wasn't until a few months ago, when we tried this new product, it changed our life. It got rid of the last bit of Miralax he was taking.

I think everyone here has a point and everyone is with the good intention of trying to help these kids to be safe and healthy. Our body is so complex, and each one is different. When someone takes something, the reaction can be so different and it is difficult to say what actually caused what. As a parent with special needs, we always try to find clues about why he was doing this and that, and what the possible cause might be so that we can eliminate it and fix the problem and he will all the better. It can drive us crazy. Many times our own behavior and hormones can affect the kids in a very dramatic way, we need to be very careful of our emotions and actions around the kids, and it CAN affect their bowel movement and many other things.

I think this site should be a place for families to share their experiences (good and bad), suggestions, and provide encouragement, so that new parents can learn and research and find the best solution for their kids. As you all probably remember how confusing and scaring it was when we first had to encounter this problem. Just because something worked or did not work for you, it does not mean it will have the same affect on others. None of us are scientists here who specifically study the Miralax and know for sure the true affects on our body (I wish so). Every medicine is being absorbed by our body and I believe in that, even our skin absorbs many chemicals into our blood stream every day. However, what kind of effects it has on us is hard to measure. Today, there are so much chemicals in the things we use, we eat and drink. Did you know there are over 60,000 chemicals introduced into our life since WWII, and the number is still growing?

The United States is an over medicated society, the fourth leading cause of death in this country is pharmaceutical drug related and under supervision. So, if you can find natural and healthy ways to take care the problems and reduce the amount of chemicals in your life that would be the best solution. However, for many people, they simply have no choice, and that is when drug has its place.

If a child has diabetes and all the diet did not work, he may need insulin injection daily. We all know that is not good long term, but would you not give him the insulin or only give him once in a while if he needs it daily? There might be some diet or supplement that you haven't discovered could possible help him to reduce or eliminate the insulin, but until you find it, you must give your child the insulin he needs, because the alternative is a dangerous.

yah, what kind of product are you

using now?

And, I welcome Jack and his opposing opinions because I believe every

issue deserves debate.    I do not know if miralax did long term damage

to my daughter or not but we are scared to use it since it seemed to

make her rage all of the time.  of course it has been years and now she

is still raging.  so, i have no idea what is going on except we are

starting a med for adhd today.  (non stimulant, low side effect med)

she still is not pooping.  i have been giving her 2.5 MOST FIBER fiber

chew pills nightly and she is still pooping balls.  So, back to the

magnesium pills i guess.   argh.

I have to ask, does the Miralax work when used as prescribed?

I have had fears about using Miralax, but it is the only effective treatment

for my son. Understanding the cause for the constipation is key.

Based on what I have read here, I wouldn't give it to my son if he had

"leaky gut". But since my son's problem is of a different nature, we have

found it to be extremely effective with no apparent side effects. My son has

Spina Bifida, which involves nerve damage affecting his bowel & bladder.

My position is that being constantly constipated presents a much more real

threat to my son's health than the potential problems that a small

percentage of the population experience from Miralax.

If you can find a natural solution that works, all the better.

Find a different pediatrician. One that will work with you.

My son sees lots and lots of doctors. I have spoken to over a dozen

doctors, as well as many more medical professionals about Miralax. None of

which feel that Miralax presents a risk to my child's health. I have

researched looking for unbiased scientific data about the negative effects

of Miralax and have came up empty.

It is my opinion that there is some amount of misinformation presented as

fact in this forum. I do not believe it is intentional or with ill intent.

Most of my fears about Miralax originated in this forum. Ask your GI to put you in touch with other parents that the GI works with.

It may help to find some local support, and speak to parents in the same

boat as you are.

You'll hear several of the regulars here cry out against my opinion. They

always do. Happy New Year!
