This is so dangerous to our children and the doctors seem to distribute it like candy. I saw a report on fox news today that said 47% of children are misdiagnosed from doctors going by what other doctors just tell them what works. How long are we as parents going to put up with this. Guest guest
Deanna,Can you post that letter. I would really like to show my dd doc. We took her off the miralax about a month ago but she had been on 2 full doses and when we took her to her ped today he said to give her more because she is backed up again. My husband and I are not giving it to her anymore. We are trying milk of magnesium right now. Does anyone have any other suggestions? My dd is having a real hard time and the GFCF diet didn't seem to help. Nothing has helped longer then a couple of weeks. Her docs refuse to do any further tested and they have never scope or done anything to look at her colon. She has had two x-rays that showed her backed up recently but the last time they did an ultrasound she was 4 months old. She is now three. I can not find a doc to help and we can not afford to pay out of pocket. Does anyone have any suggestions? My dd also has reflux in her bladder and she has been holding her urine lately and has had three pee accidents in the last 24 hours. She has been potty trained for months. Guest guest
I'm going to tell you what we do, and why. No Miralax...obvious reasons. We give Cody 2 tsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil at night (just before bed). I give him this instead of Mineral Oil...which was what the docs had my older son taking years ago. The olive oil keeps the stool soft. It has been said that it can cause malabsorption due to too many fats or something like that. But, we have not had that problem. And I was also told to do it at bedtime after all meals have been eaten for the day. Like I said the olive oil is to keep the stool soft. Also he takes 2 tsp of benefiber 3x a day. This bulks up his poo. See he has mega colon and his colon does not start contracting until it "feels full"...well to get his colon full would take weeks. The benefiber kinda bulks it up so that his colon feels full sooner. But if your not giving your child something to keep the stool soft (like olive oil or whatever you prefer) then the benefiber will make the constipation worse. It is a horrible vicious cycle. 1-2 probiotics daily (we chose Align). Probiotics replace the good bacteria in the gut that is washed away by all kinds of things like antibiotics. I also give his 2 tsp of Milk of Magnesia about 2 times a week...just because it will get the ball rolling. 1 multi vitamin 2 vitamin c And a diet including lots of fruits and veggies. This does not have him going everyday, but it has him going about every 3rd day...which is good for him...he has gone as long as 3 weeks or so without going to the bathroom. This has been working for him now for over a year. But I can't let up for even 1 day...I don't know the underlying cause, so we just keep doing this. Guest guest
Deanna, What is mega colon and how is one diagnosed? Is it genetic or a side effect of chronic constipation?I was also wondering how long it takes before the Miralax is completely out of the system. My daughter was on it for nearly 9 months, first at 1/2 cap for months, then at full cap before we started weaning her off about 3 wks ago.She is 2.2 y/o. We give her Activia 1-2x per day, for dinner, I mix an oatmeal cereal for her with Dr. Schulze's Intestinal Formula #3 and prune puree, a pat of butter, 3 tbs of apple sauce (which my picky eater will actually eat while enjoying some Dora Therapy at the same time). For lunch she eats soup. She drinks plenty of water and her probiotic formula 2-3 x/day. She is off milk/cheese/white bread/corn by process of elimination and guess work on our part.Still, she is constipated and if she goes 2 days w/o BM, the following morning, we administer the Pedialax, the glycerin one, which works almost immediately. If she does go, it is after HOURS of holding back and not w/o crying quite a bit. Not sure if this is because of pain or fear or a combination.I doubt that my daughter would take olive oil or even MOM. I am considering giving her the liquid probiotic, just undecided on which one. My goal is to soften her stools to the point where she cannot hold it back. Also wondering if my daughter is suffering from ileus, one of the side effects of prolonged use of Miralax - how would I be able to tell? Is there a test for this? Guest guest
Well, Cody was diagnosed with a stretched colon (mega colon) gi doc says it is 20x the size of the average adult and his was caused from years of chronic constipation. I really don't know how long it takes for the Miralax to get out of their system. Cody has been without it for almost 2 years. One of the biggest problems it caused him was lack of thirst...I could not hardly get him to drink anything, I mean ANYTHING. I had to medicine dropper it in him...it was scary. He has slowly gotten better, but not back to normal. Before the Miralax, he was a big drinker...now he is just below average. I have never heard of ileus, I'm going to research this. I really like that regimin you make...very creative. Oh yeah, to clear something up...I am rephrasing what I said about our kids having a fear of going poo...MY son (not our kids) has/had a fear of going poo do to the pain from the constipation. He no longer has the fear because he has had NO pain for over a year now. Deanna To: miralax Sent: Sat, December 12, 2009 10:40:52 PMSubject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer????? Guest guest
Here's the problem...............the very same people who hand out the medication are the ones you need to stand behind you and say that it harmed your child.............not gonna happen. You have to prove permanent damage, then you have a case. You can't prove permanent damage when the protocol is wrong and they can say that it's not absorbed and must be coming from something else. This is why we need to speak in numbers. I'm in if anyone wants to make the call to Dateline or Fox News as a follow up on the previous story you mentioned. This is also why I petitioned the FDA in 2002 and why I tell everyone to contact the FDA to heighten their awareness at 1-800-FDA-1088. Also, you would have to put your child through numberous tests to prove permanent damage. I don't think there is a test to show that their autonomic nervous system was affected. Or that they have colonergic toxic syndrome, or that they have sensory issues due to this medication. This is what makes this drug so extremely devious, you can't prove it b/c it's internally damaged them with symptoms that are not seen with an observation by these medical professionals. What we do have though, is Calcium oxalate crystals present in the urine, stinging pee pee's, and kidney issues with white blood cells present. Some have found sludge in the kidney's and hysteria or violent behavior. This in itself is very hard to directly blame on the medication. And we do have many parents on here complaining of the same symptoms. This is why we need to speak in numbers. We are much closer that we were years ago, but we want to make sure we have enough people that are willing to come forward. Please put any posts in a miralax file so when we need them we don't have to search through thousands of emails. This is the mistake I made. And to answer your question............yes, I've spoken to Masery and Vititto out in CA. They are the law firm of Brochovich and I've spoken to a highly reputable attorney in Chicago. They both say, "you need to prove permanent damage" before you have a case. You would have to have a holistic group of doctors, I would imagine, that go against our medical professionals. ( An everyone knows this would go over like a lead balloon) I've also spoke to a toxicologist who went into the FDA and pulled all the files I told him about and then went on to say they were all on other medications. Therefore it discredited the fact that this is happening. This is why I've been looking for parents with normal children that weren't on any other medications. Seems to be like looking for a needle in a haystack since so many parents have their children on so many medications these days. So here I am, 10 years later, still researching and listening to the horror stories that I knew I would be 10 years ago, because I knew this happened to my child and I knew there'd be more. And there was! Thousands more............I'm in if you want to call.................... Jeanie Subject: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????To: miralax Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009, 8:01 PM Dear everyone, We have all experienced terrible things due to this supposedly wonder drug has anyone ever spoke to a lawyer about having this drug researched for long term side effects? This is so dangerous to our children and the doctors seem to distribute it like candy. I saw a report on fox news today that said 47% of children are misdiagnosed from doctors going by what other doctors just tell them what works. How long are we as parents going to put up with this. The things people are saying are true- Tremors, rocking, mood swings, violent behavior and so on and so on. Just curious if anyone has ever pursued this???? amy
Guest guest
Faith, I asked her to repost it with the letter head showing but if you truely want proof call the company. We all did and they say the same thing. I was confused because Braintree Labs was the first manufacturer and bought out by Schering-Plough Health Care Products? I've never heard of the company she mentioned? Amy, could you please repost the letter with the letter head showing? You can easily make a copy and black out any personal information? Guest guest
Faith, the urine issue is most likely due to the miralax. We are having the same problem and she never had any urinary issues before. It's been 10 years now and we're back to a Nephrologist. Have him check for calcium oxalate crystals in the urine. Is she showin white blood cells present also? Our Nephrologist suggests Senna b/c we won't take Miralax. How do you respect a doc that's using a medication off label against the manufacturer's advise anyway? This is extremely hard. And then when you tell them that your child is having side affects, they say it can't be from the medication I gave you? And proceed to tell these parents that they are doing a disservice to their child by not giving it to them...............grrrr! Subject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????To: miralax Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009, 9:50 PM Deanna,Can you post that letter. Guest guest
Lillu, we found that the enemas or suppositories sting after Miralax. Why don't you try to see if she might go on the third day instead. Then she will learn that if she goes, you won't have to give her one. Subject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????To: miralax Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009, 10:40 PM Deanna, What is mega colon and how is one diagnosed? She is off milk/cheese/ white bread/corn by process of elimination and guess work on our part.Still, she is constipated and if she goes 2 days w/o BM, the following morning, we administer the Pedialax, the glycerin one, which works almost immediately. From: deanna gentry <dkg116yahoo (DOT) com>To: miralax@yahoogroups .comSent: Sat, December 12, 2009 11:07:02 PMSubject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer????? Guest guest
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ileus Deanna, my doc went over these side affects with me on the adverse reactions to miralax and polyethylene glycol from the FDA to better understand what this medication did to people. I asked what every side affect was b/c he knows them off the top of his head vs. looking up each and every one. illeus is a paralytic condition often seen after surgery also. It's nerve damage. It puts the bowels to sleep, therefore, after taking this medication, they couldn't go if they wanted to. This is probably why parents can't get their kids off it. What a great marketing stratagie, they are dependant on it. This is awful and probably why they end up with mega colon. They cannot deficate. Subject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????To: miralax Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009, 10:58 PM Well, Cody was diagnosed with a stretched colon (mega colon) gi doc says it is 20x the size of the average adult and his was caused from years of chronic constipation. What a great marketing stratagie, they are dependant on it. This is awful and probably why they end up with mega colon. They cannot deficate. She is off milk/cheese/ white bread/corn by process of elimination and guess work on our part.Still, she is constipated and if she goes 2 days w/o BM, the following morning, we administer the Pedialax, the glycerin one, which works almost immediately. See he has mega colon and his colon does not start contracting until it "feels full"....well to get his colon full would take weeks. I'm going to tell you what we do, and why. No Miralax...obvious reasons. We give Cody 2 tsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil at night (just before bed). Guest guest
It does -- but in order to get the ball rolling well, you need to have someone who has a direct cause/effect RECENTLY with test results and without any other possibilities of cause of damage. Then you can add in all the others in the " class " . If so, I would alternate solutions so the body does not get used to any particular one, if possible.> > > From: Lillu lillu0314yahoo (DOT) com>> Subject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????> To: miralax@yahoogroups .com> Date: Saturday, December 12, 2009, 10:40 PM> > >  > > > > Deanna, > > What is mega colon and how is one diagnosed? Is it genetic or a side effect of chronic constipation?> > I was also wondering how long it takes before the Miralax is completely out of the system. My daughter was on it for nearly 9 months, first at 1/2 cap for months, then at full cap before we started weaning her off about 3 wks ago.> > She is 2.2 y/o. She is off milk/cheese/ white bread/corn by process of elimination and guess work on our part.> > Still, she is constipated and if she goes 2 days w/o BM, the following morning, we administer the Pedialax, the glycerin one, which works almost immediately. If she does go, it is after HOURS of holding back and not w/o crying quite a bit. Not sure if this is because of pain or fear or a combination.> > I doubt that my daughter would take olive oil or even MOM. > > > > > > From: deanna gentry dkg116yahoo (DOT) com>> To: miralax@yahoogroups .com> Sent: Sat, December 12, 2009 11:07:02 PM> Subject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????> >  > > > > > I'm going to tell you what we do, and why.> No Miralax...obvious reasons.>  > We give Cody 2 tsp of Extra Virgin Olive Oil at night (just before bed). Guest guest
They want doctor records stating the med/damage connection. We are going thru something similar these last couple of years with our vaccine case. Our son reacted within 5mins and was hospitalized, deteriated fast, many many medical issues followed, we was loosing our boy and even with all that, it is a hard case to prove. Doctors rarely well admit they scripted any meds that can harm someone. Infact when it comes to the vacs, some docs have ruined there carreers when stating the damage vaccines have caused. Now when you cant prove a direct link if there is substantial medical records showing damages as of the immediate use of meds and as earlier poster mentioned no possible other possibility of other causes(they dig deep and can really twist things around). I think with the PEG case, numbers is what would matter and finding an attorney that would be willing to take a group case! Records are vital! Even something as simple as maybe 5 lb loss not being recorded can throw a case out the window. Our son dropped 5 lbs within a week and kept loosing, at about 3mths later he had doctor visit, he was so fussy the nurse just guessed on weight based on earlier records instead of weighing him. The opposing attorneys seen this weight and used it to prove he was back to the normal weight befor his reaction. I was so horrified and new this was wrong, even our attorney said it wasnt good just over the weight. This was even with records after that guessed weight showing weight loss/failure to thrive. But that doesnt matter because they have time frames of damage that is allowed in court and vaccines is very short time frame. I went and got hundreds of medical records/papers, spent many hours going thru them all. A miracle, I found a hospital emergency admit record that showed the accurate weight loss and it stated with clothes on, and guess what, IT WAS THE SAME DAY AS THE DOC VISIT, just later time. And the other thing that prooved the doctor visit was wrong was all the other many medical visits had his height next to the weight, but not the guessed day/weight/no height and so the judge accepted that. So remember recording everything at doctor office visits is so important no matter how simple it seems and I learned to always try to get every visit record at time of appointment, we also discovered records do disapear and i suspect even changed later. Jennie<><Subject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer?????To: miralax Date: Sunday, December 13, 2009, 1:28 PM It does -- but in order to get the ball rolling well, you need to have someone who has a direct cause/effect RECENTLY with test results and without any other possibilities of cause of damage. Then you can add in all the others in the "class". Deanna To: miralax Sent: Sun, December 13, 2009 9:03:29 AMSubject: Re: has anyone ever considered speaking to a lawyer????? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ileus Deanna, my doc went over these side affects with me on the adverse reactions to miralax and polyethylene glycol from the FDA to better understand what this medication did to people.
