We have had good luck with Nutramigen Lipil with some of our WIC babies with

eczema. Any of the hypoallergenic formulas should help (Alimentum, Pregestimil)

but Nutramigen seems to be the one most of the doctors in our area prefer.

Baby formula

Calling al pediatric RDs -

A colleague of mine gave birth 3 month ago. Her baby is on formula.

Apparently the baby has eczema and is allergic to both soy and milk formula.

The eczema is worsening b/c the poor baby cannot stop itch.

ANy advice for formula?

Good evening!

She should discuss it with her MD, but the baby likely needs Nutramigen,

Alimentum or Elecare--a completely hydrolyzed formula. Be warned, it tastes

terrible and may take some time for the baby to adjust, but if it's the only

option offered, over a bit of time, the babies usually accept it. Thankfully,

these types of allergies seen in infancy can often be outgrown over time (not

under 1 year of age but often by 3 or so) but they will have to monitor the

progress well and at least get thru the first year or so. Occasionally insurance

companies will cover the cost, but not usually. She can check. If this doesn't

work, she can move onto NeoCate, which doesn't taste any better and costs even

more, but usually will be tolerated.

Good luck!

I have this theory that chocolate slows down the aging process....

It may not be true, but do I dare take the chance?

Thanks everybody!

This is great. and yes, an MD is involved but you know how it is - a new

mom... and I have no experience with Peds. Last time I worked with Peds was

more the 10 yrs ago....is as good as none.

So again, thanks a lot. I will forward your recommendations.

Merav,

I just attended a conference at Yale University on the Advances in Clinical Use

of Probiotics. One of the researchers, Isolauri (she is from Finland or

Sweden I believe)had a presentation on children with eczema with a milk allergy.

There is research that if a child's gut is not colonized effectively with

bacteria from 0-6 months old, it can result in allergies because of a gut

barrier dysfunction. Her research has focused on children with eczema. She has

demonstrated that supplementing these children with Lactobacillus GG

(culturelle), the reduction in eczema symptoms is dramatic. I wish I could show

you all the pictures of the childred she studied....it was amazing.

I am not sure of the dosing but it may be worth a shot.....inexpensive and

effective!
